    Focus on German Studies 23 Sensory Perception and Identity Formation in Hans Fallada’s Kleiner Mann - was nun? (1932) Britta K. Meredith University of Connecticut Abstract Hans Fallada’s novel Kleiner Mann - was nun? (Little Man - what now?), published in 1932, exemplifies the New Objectivity of the 1920s. However, scholars have not yet sufficiently examined the key role sensory perceptions play in the narration and their implications for illustrating the Zeitgeist of a time of political and economic turmoil, inflation, unemployment and the eventual fall of the Weimar Republic (1919-1933). I show how Fallada utilizes sensory perception to emphasize the disorientation of the individual at the end of the Weimar Republic. I pursue the following questions in this essay: What is the significance of the use of sensory perception regarding identity formation processes in the novel? How is sensory perception used and abused to define one’s own identity, or to understand others’ identities? What is the connection between sensory perception, everyday life, and fictional media, such as movies, in the novel? “All our knowledge begins with [sensory] experience” (Kant, The Critique of Pure Reason) Hans Fallada’s novel Kleiner Mann - was nun? (Little Man - what now?),1 published in 1932, is highly ranked in the literary canon of German modernism and has received much scholarly attention, as it exemplifies the New Objectivity of the 1920s. From the Constitution to the Cabaret: Art and Politics in the Weimar Republic, 1918-1933 For many observers, the period in German history between 1918 and 1933 (called the Weimar Republic after the city where the constitution was signed) symbolizes political failure that led inevitably it seems, to Hitler’s Third Reich. Germany’s experiment with democracy, so the argument goes, brought about instability and discontentment that created a climate in which the Nazi party could thrive. But it would be a mistake to reduce the Weimar years to a chapter in the prehistory of National Socialism. The legacies of the Weimar Republic—as a center for intellectual and artistic innovation, political experimentation, and social change— have endured until the present day, defining our ideas of what it means to be modern. This seminar is intended as an introduction to the sources and methods of historical interpretation and analysis. As it is an introductory seminar, it assumes students have no prior experience with German history. For this reason, the course includes secondary literature to supplement the student’s knowledge. Most of the reading and writing assignments, however, involve working with primary materials in order to develop the critical skills of the historian. Reading paintings, films, and novels “as historical texts,” students will confront the challenges of using cultural artifacts to interrogate the past. Students will do history instead of reading about history, exploring the emancipatory ideas of the “golden twenties” as well as ordinary voices struggling to come to terms with profound change.

Released in German as Der Alpdruck (“The Nightmare”) in 1947, the year of Fallada’s death, the novel is the only book other than Alone in Berlin to have been written by the author in the post-war period. It tells of a man, Dr Doll, and his wife, who are taking shelter in the German countryside, haunted by nightmarish images at night, when the Russians invade. They return to Berlin after the end of the war, and attempt to resume their lives, but confronting the reality of life in the devastated city, they fall into morphine addiction, with each dose a “small death”. “More than anything, [Dr Doll] wishes to vanquish the demon of collective guilt, but he is unable to right any wrongs,” said the novel’s English- language publisher Scribe UK, which will publish the book in the UK in October. “As the German nation tries to awaken from the nightmare that Hitler’s state had descended into, Fallada’s protagonists slowly wrestle their way out of their own oblivion, eventually finding a way forward.” Scribe said the novel was “heavily autobiographical”, with the author’s “turbulent life … a mirror for the imploding society he documented”.
