ESTABLISHED 1856 April 25, 2019 Vol. CXLVI, No. 25 ECO, Kenyon Democrats host ‘Walkout to Save the Earth’ BETÜL AYDIN NEWS EDITOR In honor of Earth Day, Kenyon Democrats and ECO partnered up to or- ganize a “Walkout to Save the Earth.” On Monday, around 30 students gath- ered in front of Rosse Hall to call for action to stop climate change. Jessie Gorovitz ’20 came up with the idea of the walkout. “I decided to organize this rally because I feel like even people who might not consider themselves to be activists are starting to pick up on that this is a situation that we’re going to have to deal with for the rest of our lives,” Gorovitz said. “It’s our responsibility now to either encourage other people to take action or take action ourselves.” Gorovitz noted while this issue may seem daunting to approach, espe- cially under the current presidential administration, it is important to engage with it on every level of government. “So [it’s] not just being worried about what the president is doing, but talk- ing about what your mayor is doing and talking about what your local elected officials are doing or at the statewide level, because cities actually have a lot of control over how environmentally sustainable they are,” she said. “Just little things like that end up significantly reducing waste happen at the local level.” Jackie O’Malley ’21, co-president of ECO, emphasized that climate change affects everyone and that it is at its core a humanitarian issue. She called for people to make politically conscious choices, especially during a time when the U.S. is one of the only countries to opt out of the Paris Climate Agree- ment. “These are issues that impact our community, but these are also issues that disproportionately impact the people who don’t have the ability to do things about them, so thank you all for being here and I hope that you keep On Monday, students called for action on climate change with a walkout at Rosse Hall. | BEN NUTTER getting involved throughout the week,” she said at the walkout. page 2 Despite awkward Q&A, Tig Activist, educator talks sustainability, food injustice page 2 Notaro gives solid comedy set COURTESY OF NIKKI ANDERSON DEVON MUSGRAVE-JOHNSON ingness to self-deprecate, Notaro’s set came EDITOR-IN-CHIEF across as well-rehearsed and purposefully timed. HIPNESS, HYBRIDITY, AND “NEO-BOHEMIAN” HIP-HOP: RETHINKING EXISTENCE IN THE AFRICAN DIASPORA A Dissertation Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Maxwell Lewis Williams August 2020 © 2020 Maxwell Lewis Williams HIPNESS, HYBRIDITY, AND “NEO-BOHEMIAN” HIP-HOP: RETHINKING EXISTENCE IN THE AFRICAN DIASPORA Maxwell Lewis Williams Cornell University 2020 This dissertation theorizes a contemporary hip-hop genre that I call “neo-bohemian,” typified by rapper Kendrick Lamar and his collective, Black Hippy. I argue that, by reclaiming the origins of hipness as a set of hybridizing Black cultural responses to the experience of modernity, neo- bohemian rappers imagine and live out liberating ways of being beyond the West’s objectification and dehumanization of Blackness. In turn, I situate neo-bohemian hip-hop within a history of Black musical expression in the United States, Senegal, Mali, and South Africa to locate an “aesthetics of existence” in the African diaspora. By centering this aesthetics as a unifying component of these musical practices, I challenge top-down models of essential diasporic interconnection. Instead, I present diaspora as emerging primarily through comparable responses to experiences of paradigmatic racial violence, through which to imagine radical alternatives to our anti-Black global society. Overall, by rethinking the heuristic value of hipness as a musical and lived Black aesthetic, the project develops an innovative method for connecting the aesthetic and the social in music studies and Black studies, while offering original historical and musicological insights into Black metaphysics and studies of the African diaspora.

  • Refugee: Reading Neoliberal Critique and Refugee Narratives Through
UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles “Bad Gal” and the “Bad” Refugee: Reading Neoliberal Critique and Refugee Narratives through Cambodian Canadian Hip Hop A thesis submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Asian American Studies by Kenneth Wing Lun Chan 2016 ABSTRACT OF THESIS “Bad Gal” and the “Bad” Refugee: Reading Neoliberal Critique and Refugee Narratives through Cambodian Canadian Hip Hop by Kenneth Wing Lun Chan Master of Arts in Asian American Studies University of California, Los Angeles, 2016 Professor Victor Bascara, Chair This project examines the intersections of refugee discourses and neoliberal critique through the analysis of the 2013 hip hop music video “Bad Gal” by Cambodian Canadian artist Honey Cocaine. By utilizing the concept of the “bad refugee” as a subjectivity that refuses to reconcile imperialist wars in Southeast Asia, rejects developmental narratives of progress and uplift, and contradicts neoliberal multiculturalism, this project demonstrates how “Bad Gal” is a countersite that reveals neoliberal ruptures. I observe “Bad Gal” for its audiovisual content, use of digital editing techniques, and themes of deviance and blackness, in arguing that it expresses an alternative refugee narrative and temporality, and a refusal of neoliberal subjectivity through the identifications of blackness and hip hop. This project draws from Critical Refugee Studies, cultural studies, and comparative racialization scholars in delineating the processes of gendered racialization for the Cambodian refugee diaspora, and the ways in which cultural productions provide a lens in understanding their relationship to the neoliberal state. ii The thesis of Kenneth Wing Lun Chan is approved.

Section 10: Outdoor Action Song Guide Songs, just like games, can be a useful and fun addition to a trip. Whether used to get the group warmed up on a chilly morning or to lighten the mood on the trail, songs should be a part of your leader bag of tricks. Most of these songs represent relatively low interpersonal risk except for songs that single out individuals such as Little Sally Walker. As for any activity, use your leader radar to determine when the individual and group dynamics are appropriate for a particular song. Enjoy! 10-1 Old Nassau Tune every heart and every voice, bid every care withdraw; Let all with one accord rejoice, in praise of Old Nassau. In praise of Old Nassau we sing, Hurrah! hurrah! hurrah! • Social Media to the Mainstream
1 SoundCloud Rap Narratives as Pop Star Narratives: From Social Media to the Mainstream Popular music meanings are dependent on the artist understood as a “total star text” (Dyer 1979). There has been much discussion in academia of how digital technology transforms formerly auteurist narratives of popular music creation into stories about collective authorship (Ahonen 2008, 107). Yet central fictions continue to involve the singular figure of the popular music star. Like new technologies before it, social media change how pop music stardom narratives are constructed. Narrative arcs (stories) and narrative forms (how those stories are told) have transformed alongside changes to the communication structures between artist and audience, and shifts in the authenticating mechanisms applied to pop stars. The transition of so-called SoundCloud rappers to the center of the American pop music landscape over the last five years epitomizes these changes. This study looks at how the narratives of SoundCloud rappers are constructed in the exchange between social media and traditional media publications; it assumes artist narratives to be constructed in this dialogic space. Social media events are articulated onto traditional structures of legitimation, and mainstream media canonize social media narratives. The results of this study indicate how artist narratives regularly unfold online, and how those patterns feed into the more familiar dramatic story arcs. Between January 2015 and June 2019, approximately 5–6% of unique artists that appeared on the Billboard Hot 100 could be categorized as “SoundCloud rappers.” This research focuses on a subset of these, artists who entered mainstream consciousness between 2016 and 2018, and can be broadly thought of as the second generation of SoundCloud rappers to make the transition to the mainstream.

Keef, an 18-year-old whose real name is Keith Cozart, is the most successful of the city’s emerging “drill” sound rappers (named after a slang term for shooting someone). Last year, while under house arrest for aiming a gun at a police officer, Cozart uploaded some videos to YouTube that eventually landed him an estimated $6 million deal with Interscope Records. The title of one of his early hits, “3hunna,” is a nickname for the Black Disciples gang, and in the song he maligns the Tooka gang, a crew affiliated with the enemy Gangster Disciples. “Fucka Tooka gang, bitch, I’m 3hunna,” he chants. Last spring, Joseph Coleman, then a baby-faced 18-year-old calling himself Lil JoJo, responded to Chief Keef’s musical provocations with his own uploaded song that included the hook “Niggas claim 300 but we BDK,” that is, Black Disciples Killers. In his “3HUNNAK,” Coleman also threatened to shoot a member of Chief Keef’s clique, and the video—which quickly captured close to a million views on YouTube—consists mostly of a throng of guys jostling into the frame, pointing an arsenal of firearms at the camera.
