Building from Diana Wallace’s 2005 study The Woman’s Historical Novel: British Women Writers, 1900-2000, I offer a modified definition of “the woman’s historical novel” and a transatlantic consideration of several of the most popular titles in the contemporary period, including The Other Boleyn Girl (2001), Outlander (1991), A Great and Terrible Beauty (2003), and Scarlett (1991).

  • Historical and Linguistic Deviation in Philippa Gregory's Novels
Historical and Linguistic Deviation in Philippa Gregory’s Novels BA Thesis English Language and Culture, Utrecht University Lisanne Pol 3467902 Supervisor: Marcelle Cole July 2012 Table of Contents Introduction 2 Part I - Historical Analysis 3 Anne's Beauty 4 Henry Percy 6 Thomas Wyatt 11 The King’s ‘Other Women’ 13 Part II - Linguistic Analysis 20 Tense 21 Aspect 22 Auxiliaries 23 Superlative Adjectives 25 Part III - Concluding Remarks 28 Works Cited 30 1 Introduction Philippa Gregory is a historian and a journalist and has also written several historical novels about British royal families and their history. Her books are thematically motivated, for instance into The Cousins’ War , The Civil War , The Wideacre Trilogy and The Tudor Court Novels . The events Gregory describes in her novels are based on true facts and her “commitment to historical accuracy are the hallmarks of her writing” (philippagregory.com). However, describing what happened during the sixteenth century is a challenge, even more so is making the era appealing to a modern readership. The awards she has won indicate she has achieved the latter, but the question remains how accurate her novels really are, historically and linguistically speaking. To analyse Gregory’s accuracy, this thesis will be split up into two parts, each focusing on one of her novels: the first part will discuss The Other Boleyn Girl ; the second part will focus on The Virgin’s Lover . These two famous novels describe a part of the lives of Anne Boleyn and Elizabeth I, respectively. Firstly, Philippa Gregory’s historical accuracy will be analysed, by using the story of Anne Boleyn as a focal point.

  • Women's Historical Fiction
Women’s Historical Fiction “After” Feminism: Discursive Reconstructions of the Tudors in Contemporary Literature by Jenna Elizabeth Barlow Dissertation presented for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of English at Stellenbosch University Supervisor: Dr. Daniel Roux April 2014 Stellenbosch University http://scholar.sun.ac.za Declaration By submitting this thesis, I declare that the entirety of the work contained therein is my own, original work, that I am the sole author thereof (save to the extent explicitly otherwise stated), that reproduction and publication thereof by Stellenbosch University will not infringe any third party rights and that I have not previously in its entirety or in part submitted it for obtaining any qualification. April 2014 Copyright © 2014 Stellenbosch University All rights reserved ii Stellenbosch University http://scholar.sun.ac.za Abstract Historical fiction is a genre in a constant state of flux: since its inception in the nineteenth century, it has been shaped by cultural trends and has persistently responded to the way in which history is popularly conceptualised. As such, historical novels have always revealed as much about the socio-political context of their moment of production as they do about their historical settings. The advent of feminism was among the most significant movements which shaped the evolution of the women’s historical novel in the twentieth century, prompting as it did a radical shift in historiographic methodology. As feminist discourse became embedded in popular culture in the latter decades of the twentieth century, this shift in turn allowed authors of historical fiction the opportunity to reconsider the ways in which women have been traditionally represented in both historical narrative and fiction.

  • In Mary Shelley's Perkin Warb
FEMININE-CENTERED HISTORY AND THE “GOOD CAUSE” IN MARY SHELLEY’S PERKIN WARBECK Jena Al-Fuhaid A dissertation submitted to the Faculty oF the University oF North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial FulFillment oF the requirements For the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department oF English and Comparative Literature. Chapel Hill 2014 Approved by: Jeanne Moskal Beverly Taylor James Thompson Laurie Langbauer Inger Brodey © 2014 Jena Al-Fuhaid ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT JENA AL-FUHAID: Feminine-centered History and the “good cause” in Mary Shelley’s Perkin Warbeck (Under the direction of Jeanne Moskal) This study advances the long-overdue critical reevaluation of Mary Shelley’s The Fortunes of Perkin Warbeck (1830) by examining the appearances of the sixteenth-century pretender to the throne, Perkin Warbeck (both prior to and contemporaneous with Mary Shelley), in conventional historical writings and narratives of political reform; providing the necessary, albeit esoteric, historical background, both Regency and medieval, for a thorough understanding of Perkin Warbeck and its historical moment; and analyzing Mary Shelley’s personal writings, letters, and journals for evidence of Perkin Warbeck’s function as a safe venue for Mary Shelley’s political opinions, participation in political reform, support of Wollstonecraftian ideology, and contributions to the “‘good cause’—the cause of the advancement of freedom and knowledge, of the rights of women &c” (MWSJ 555). Contrary to the scholarly assumption that Shelley retreated from the political sphere after P. B. Shelley’s death, I suggest that Perkin Warbeck is, in fact, a political allegory, and I use the late-medieval lives of Princess Elizabeth and Elizabeth Woodville to critique Regency events, chiefly, George IV’s persecution of Queen Caroline.

A compelling tale of passion and intrigue set in the eighteenth century. From the author of The Other Boleyn Girl and The Virgin's Lover. 'If it was the way of the world that girls le home, then the world would have to change. I would never change.' Wideacre Hall, set in the heart of the English countryside, is the ancestral home that Beatrice Lacey loves. But as a woman of the eighteenth century she has no right of inheritance. Corrupted by a world that mistreats women, she sets out to corrupt others. Sexual and wilful, she believes that the only way to achieve control over Wideacre is through a series of horrible crimes, and no-one escapes the consequences of her need to possess the land.
