Chemical variation of tannins and triterpenes in Brazilian populations of Maytenus ilicifolia Mart. Considering the importance of these species in popular medicine, this work is focused on the determination of the chemical content of tannins and the triterpenes friedelan-3-one, friedelan-3-ol and friedelin in 15 native populations of Maytenus ilicifolia distributed in the south and mind-west regions of Brazil. Correlation of the concentration of these compounds with the environmental parameters such as av- erage annual temperature, climate, vegetation, geomorphology, latitude and altitude was determined using Pearson’s coefficient. Results showed that average annual temperature and climate have significant effect on tannin content at a 95% confidence level. The highest tannin concentration was found in Ponta Porã population, and for the triterpenes investigated, a significant correlation between their concentrations with the environmental variables studied was not verified. Only few plant species, within different phylogenetic clades, have secondary growth by more than one vascular cambium. Often, these successive cambia are organised concentrically. In the mangrove genusAvicennia however, the successive cambia seem to have a more complex organisation. This study aimed (i) at understanding the development of successive cambia by giving a three- dimensional description of the hydraulic architecture of Avicennia and (¡i) at unveiling the possible adaptive nature of growth by successive cambia through a study of the ecological distribution of plant species with concentric internal phloem. Results: Avicennia had a complex network of non-cylindrical wood patches, the complexity of which increased with more stressful ecological conditions. As internal phloem has been suggested to play a role in water storage and embolism repair, the spatial organisation ofAvicennia wood could provide advantages in the ecologically stressful conditions species of this mangrove genus are growing in. -

Resumo Maytenus ilicifolia (Celastraceae) é uma planta conhecida popularmente como “espinheira-santa”. A espécie é nativa da região sudeste do Brasil, se adapta melhor a climas quentes e é utilizada na medicina popular no tratamento de doenças estomacais. A fitoterapia, encontra-se em expansão no Brasil e no mundo e, devido a esta crescente busca e desordenada extração de plantas medicinais, muitos vendem espécies semelhantes como se fossem originais, comprometendo a real eficácia dos produtos utilizados. Nesse sentido, a comparação anatômica tem provado ser útil na diferenciação das espécies. Assim, o presente estudo visa avaliar a autenticidade de espinheira-santa comercializada em mercados de ervas de São Mateus-ES, por meio da caracterização de comparação anatômica foliar de amostras de M. ilicifolia in situ e comercializada. Comparison of Different Classifications on the Celastraceae

Perdue, Jr., Chief ,.. Medicinal Plant Resources ~aboratory Currently, the taxonomy of the Celastraceae is in a state of confusion. A few recent revisions limited mostly ,to political boundaries, have helped to clarify the systematics in a few genera; however, the continued disagreement among generic relationships seems to make it nore difficult for the non-specialist. Because of special efforts to procure plant samples in this family, frequent synonomy has led to confusion as well as duplica- tion, especially in Africa where a number of samples have been received from floristically related countries in which different authorities are recogcized for the Celastracean Flora. This report, primarily, will 'deal with the systematic problems of the African Celasrrtseae. Until recently, the Hippocrateaceae was treated as a separate family from the Celastraceae (Smith, 1940; Loesener, 1942; Wilczek, 1960; Hallee, 1962). L Robson (1965, 1966), Ding Hou (1963, 1964), Blakelock (1958), and Codd (1972) have united the Hippocrateaceae with the Celastraceae; but, their reasons for uniting the two families are not in agreement. The Celastraceae is believed by Codd and Kobson to comprise about 60 to 70 genera, but Ding Hou has indicated that there are about 90 genera. For the purpose of identifying two major complexes, which taxonomists are not in agreement, I will refer to the Celastraceae and Hippocrateaceae as two separate families. -

An attempt has been made to review synthetically C ORRESPONDENCE based on the data from different disciplines divulged by earlier authors and from present author’s study on the alliance. Rodrigues2 Human activities have led to the loss of habitats and biodiversity in the Atlantic Rain Forest in Brazil. Ecological restoration aims to rebuild this biome and should include not only the reinstatement of species but also the reestablishment of complex ecological interactions and the ecological functions that they provide. One such function is seed dispersal, which is provided by the interactions between animal frugivores and plants. We studied seed dispersal networks in 3 different tropical forest sites restored 15, 25, and 57 years ago; temporal scales rarely observed in restoration studies. We investigated changes in network structure (nestedness, modularity, and network specialization) in these communities over restoration time. Although network size and the number of interactions increased with time since restoration, the networks were composed of generalist birds, and the large frugivores remained absent. Contrary to our expectations though, species richness was highest in the 25-year-old site, maybe due to the higher number of species used in the planting. Nestedness values were low in all 3 networks, but the highest nestedness was observed in the intermediate-aged site. However, the oldest network was significantly modular and showed higher complementary specialization. These results suggest that 57 years after restoration, the complexity of mutualistic interactions in seed dispersal networks has increased, this enhancing ecosystem function in the Atlantic forest. Contudo, foi verificado que não há correlação direta entre a produção daqueles marcadores químicos e as características morfológicas observadas.
