Considering the importance of these species in popular medicine, this work is focused on the determination of the chemical content of tannins and the triterpenes friedelan-3-one, friedelan-3-ol and friedelin in 15 native populations of Maytenus ilicifolia distributed in the south and mind-west regions of Brazil. Correlation of the concentration of these compounds with the environmental parameters such as av- erage annual temperature, climate, vegetation, geomorphology, latitude and altitude was determined using Pearson’s coefficient. Results showed that average annual temperature and climate have significant effect on tannin content at a 95% confidence level. The highest tannin concentration was found in Ponta Porã population, and for the triterpenes investigated, a significant correlation between their concentrations with the environmental variables studied was not verified. ESTUDIO DE LA VEGETACION NATIVA EN PLANTACIONES DE EUCALYPTUS GRANDIS (MYRTACEAE) EN EL NORTE DE LA PROVINCIA DE CORRIENTES, REPUBLICA Argentinal

BARRETT2 YSARA G. TRESSENS3 Summary Vascular plant species of the understory of Euca/yptus grandis plantations were studied in the northeastern departments of the Argentinian province of Corrientes. These plantations were located in red soil hills, in sandy river banks and in fossil sand dunes of the Paraná River. The inventory includes 243 native taxa corresponding to 66 families; 86% belong to the Dicotyledons of which most of them (70%) are woody species. The families best represented are: Leguminosae, Myrtaceae, So/anaceae, Compositae and Euphorbiaceae. Size, number of species and individuals within species decrease from the North to the Southwest associated to soillimiting factors and lesser rainfall. Most of the Dicotyledons have mechanisms for dispersal related to the animals (49%), mostly birds, followed by wind (25%). An important number of species (64%) belong to the native subtropical humid hardwood forest. Many overstory species of this forest compete succesfully with the eucalipts, such as: Cabra/ea canjerana, Patagonu/a americana, H%ca/yx ba/ansae, Tabebuia heptaphylla, al! important regional commercial timber. Also a great number of species living spontaneously in humid conditions, were found apparently wel! adapted to the new environment. Since most of the species of the understory of the Euca/yptus grandis plantations came from the native humid forest, it is possible to conclude that these plantations create environmental conditions which favor the migration of the humid forest over the sabanas and grasslands of the neighborhood. -

Received June 26, 2013; accepted February 6, 2014 We applied a taxonomic approach to select the Eugenia dysenterica (Myrtaceae) leaf extract, known in Brazil as “cagaita,” and evaluated its gastroprotective effect. The ability of the extract or carbenoxolone to protect the gastric mucosa from ethanol/HCl-induced lesions was evaluated in mice. The contributions of nitric oxide (NO), endogenous sulfhydryl (SH) groups and alterations in HCl production to the extract’s gastroprotective effect were investigated. We also determined the antioxidant activity of the extract and the possible contribution of tannins to the cytoprotective effect. The extract and carbenoxolone protected the gastric mucosa from ethanol/HCl-induced ulcers, and the former also decreased HCl production. The blockage of SH groups but not the inhibition of NO synthesis abolished the gastroprotective action of the extract. Tannins are present in the extract, which was analyzed by matrix assisted laser desorption/ioniza- tion (MALDI); the tannins identified by fragmentation pattern (MS/MS) were condensed type-B, coupled up to eleven flavan-3-ol units and were predominantly procyanidin and prodelphinidin units. -

Mennega Nationaal Herbarium Nederland, Utrecht University branch, Heidelberglaan 2, 3584 es Utrecht, The Netherlands SUMMARY The wood anatomy was studied of 82 species from 34 out of 54 genera in the subfamily Euphorbioideae, covering all five tribes recognized in this subfamily. In general the woods show a great deal of similarity. They are charac terized by a relative paucity of vessels, often arranged in short to long, dumbbell-shaped or twin, radial multiples, and by medium-sized to large intervessel pits; fibres often have gelatinous walls; parenchyma apotracheal in short, wavy, narrow bands and diffuse-in-aggregates; mostly uni- or only locally biseriate rays, strongly heterocellular (except Hippomane, Hura and Pachystroma). Cell contents, either silica or crystals, or both together, are nearly always present and often useful in distinguishing between genera. Radiallaticifers were noticed in most genera, though they are scarce and difficult to trace. The laticifers are generally not surrounded by special cells, except in some genera of the subtribe Euphorbiinae where radiallaticifers are comparatively frequent and conspicuous. Three ofthe five tribes show a great deal of conformity in their anatomy. Stomatocalyceae, however, stand apart from the rest by the combination of the scarcity of vessels, and mostly biseriate, vertically fused and very tall rays. Within Euphorbieae the subtribe Euphorbiinae shows a greater vari ation than average, notably in vessel pitting, the frequent presence of two celled parenchyma strands, and in size and frequency of the laticifers. -

Ethnobotanical indices show the importance of many native trees as local sources of fruits while highlighting the preponderance of the Myrtaceae family. -
