PAUL TORRANCE Contributors Andrew Case Andrew Case is 2010 graduate of Temple University with a bachelor’s degree in Communications. While studying at Temple University, Andrew was a walk-on member of the Varsity Football Team, where he earned a full schol- arship and consistently received a spot on the prestigious Athletic Director’s Honor Roll. Presently, Andrew works, full-time, at Drexel University as the Manager, Sales & Marketing, Athletics and is also enrolled at Drexel Univer- sity working toward receiving an M.S. in Creativity and Innovation. Outside of the classroom, Andrew is an abstract artist showing work at Corridor Con- temporary Gallery in Philadelphia. Alan S. Kaufman Alan Kaufman is Clinical Professor of Psychology at Yale University Child Study Center (since 1997). He is a Penn graduate who earned his PhD under Robert Thorndike at Columbia University. Alan worked closely with David Wechsler in the development of the WISC-R, and has published, with Nadeen Kaufman, numerous tests, including the KABC-II Normative Update, KTEA- 3, and KBIT-2. The 1983 theory-based K-ABC, inspired by Paul Torrance’s introduction of cerebral specialization theory to Alan and Nadeen, has been translated and adapted throughout the world. Alan has published widely on the clinical and neuropsychological assessment of intelligence and has greatly impacted interpretation of IQ tests, especially Wechsler’s. His books include the 1979 landmark Intelligent Testing with the WISC-R and, more recent- ly, Essentials of WAIS-IV Assessment—2nd ed. (with Elizabeth Lichtenberger; 2013) and Intelligent Testing with the WISC-V (with Susie Raiford & Diane Coalson; 2016). Alan and Nadeen co-edit the influential Wiley book se- ries Essentials of Psychological Assessment. Alan, a Fellow of four divisions of APA and of APS, is recipient of APA Division 16’s Senior Scientist Award (1997) and Division 5’s Samuel J. Messick Distinguished Scientific Contributions Award (2012). Since 2012, first Fordham University, and now Gonzaga University, presents the Alan S. Kaufman Intelligent Testing Award at its annual Spring Assessment Conference. Alan’s greatest achievement is being James Kaufman’s father. Together they coauthored the 1995 book The Worst Baseball Pitchers of All Time. David C. Sledge David Sledge is a native of Durham, North Carolina who has worked in vari- ous architecture firms for over ten years, and taught architectural design, his- tory, and theory courses for over ten years. Sledge is a student at Drexel Uni- versity in the Doctor of Education Program in Leadership and Change with a concentration in Creativity Studies. His research focuses on multidisciplinary collaboration, dialogue, and creativity studies to restructure design education. 6 MARKING THE 105TH BIRTHDAY OF THE CONTEMPORARY FATHER OF CREATIVITY: E. PAUL TORRANCE Sledge holds degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Ecole d'Art Americaines, and North Carolina State University. Professor Sledge has lectured on numerous topics related to architecture such as Monumentality, Modernization of Paris, Tectonics, Louis I. Kahn, Urbanity, Architectural Representation, The Kimbell Art Museum, Modern Furniture Design, Philip Johnson’s estate, the movie “Blade Runner,” and Haute Couture. Dorothy A. Sisk Dorothy A. Sisk, PhD, is a professor at Lamar University in Beaumont, Tex- as, and she teaches the graduate courses in gifted education in the Teacher Education Department. She is an international consultant focusing on gifted education, leadership and creativity development, and former Director of the U. S. Office of Gifted and Talented in Washington D.C. Dr. Sisk was a co- founder and first President of the American Creativity Association, and a co- founder and President of the World Council for Gifted and Talented Children, serving as their executive administrator, and editor of Gifted International (1980-1990). She is author and co-author of 14 books and numerous chapters and articles, and serves on a number of national and international journals as a reviewer or editor. Fredricka K. Reisman Fredricka K. Reisman, PhD, is founder of Drexel’s School of Education and is Emerita Professor in the School of Education. Additionally, Dr. Reisman served as Assistant Provost for Assessment and Evaluation, Interim Associate Dean for Research of the Goodwin College, and currently is Director of the Drexel/Torrance Center for Creativity and Innovation. Dr. Reisman received her Ph.D. in Mathematics Education from Syracuse University. Prior to com- ing to Philadelphia, Dr. Reisman served as Professor and Chair of the Divi- sion of Elementary Education at the University of Georgia and as an elemen- tary, middle school, high school

    OLMSTED TRACT; Torrance, California 2011 – 2013 SURVEY OF HISTORIC RESOURCES II. HISTORIC CONTEXT STATEMENT A. Torrance and Garden City Movement: The plan for the original City of Torrance, known as the Olmsted Tract, owes its origins to a movement that begin in England in the late 19th Century. Sir Ebenezer Howard published his manifesto “Garden Cities of To-morrow" in 1898 where he describes a utopian city in which man lives harmoniously together with the rest of nature. The London suburbs of Letchworth Garden City and Welwyn Garden City were the first built examples of garden city planning and became a model for urban planners in America. In 1899 Ebenezer founded the Garden City Association to promote his idea for the Garden City ‘in which all the advantages of the most energetic town life would be secured in perfect combination with all the beauty and delight of the country.” His notions about the integration of nature with town planning had profound influence on the design of cities and the modern suburb in the 20th Century. Examples of Garden City Plans in America include: Forest Hills Gardens, New York (by Fredrick Law Olmsted Jr.); Radburn, New Jersey; Shaker Heights, Ohio; Baldwin Hills Village, in Los Angeles, California and Greenbelt, Maryland. Fredrick Law Olmsted is considered to be the father of the landscape architecture profession in America. He had two sons that inherited his legacy and firm. They practiced as the Olmsted Brothers of Brookline Massachusetts. Fredrick Law Olmsted Junior was a founding member of The National Planning Institute of America and was its President from 1910 to 1919.

Wilson Teaching Fellows: Oskar Arnorsson, Benedict Clouette, Eva Schreiner Thurs 11am-1pm Fall 2016 This two-semester introductory course is organized around selected questions and problems that have, over the course of the past two centuries, helped to define architecture’s modernity. The course treats the history of architectural modernity as a contested, geographically and culturally uncertain category, for which periodization is both necessary and contingent. The fall semester begins with the apotheosis of the European Enlightenment and the early phases of the industrial revolution in the late eighteenth century. From there, it proceeds in a rough chronology through the “long” nineteenth century. Developments in Europe and North America are situated in relation to worldwide processes including trade, imperialism, nationalism, and industrialization. Sequentially, the course considers specific questions and problems that form around differences that are also connections, antitheses that are also interdependencies, and conflicts that are also alliances. The resulting tensions animated architectural discourse and practice throughout the period, and continue to shape our present. Each week, objects, ideas, and events will move in and out of the European and North American frame, with a strong emphasis on relational thinking and contextualization. This includes a historical, relational understanding of architecture itself. Although the Western tradition had recognized diverse building practices as “architecture” for some time, an understanding of architecture as an academic discipline and as a profession, which still prevails today, was only institutionalized in the European nineteenth century.

    Kahn at Penn Louis I. Kahn is widely known as an architect of powerful buildings. But although much has been said about his buildings, almost nothing has been written about Kahn as an unconventional teacher and philosopher whose influence on his students was far-reaching. Teaching was vitally important for Kahn, and through his Master’s Class at the University of Pennsylvania, he exerted a significant effect on the future course of architectural practice and education. This book is a critical, in-depth study of Kahn’s philosophy of education and his unique pedagogy. It is the first extensive and comprehensive investi- gation of the Kahn Master’s Class as seen through the eyes of his graduate students at Penn. James F. Williamson is a Professor of Architecture at the University of Memphis and has also taught at the University of Pennsylvania, Yale, Drexel University, and Rhodes College. He holds two Master of Architecture degrees from Penn, where he was a student in Louis Kahn’s Master’s Class of 1974. He was later an Associate with Venturi, Scott Brown, and Associates. For over thirty years he practiced as a principal in his own firm in Memphis with special interests in religious and institutional architecture. Williamson was elected to the College of Fellows of the American Institute of Architects in recognition of his contributions in architectural design and education. He is the recipient of the 2014 AIA Edward S. Frey Award for career contribu- tions to religious architecture and support of the allied arts.     Architectural Findings Summary of Architectural Trends 1940‐70 National architectural trends are evident within the survey area. The breakdown of mid‐20th‐ century styles and building types in the Architectural Findings section gives more detail about the Dayton metropolitan area’s built environment and its place within national architectural developments. In American Architecture: An Illustrated Encyclopedia, Cyril Harris defines Modern architecture as “A loosely applied term, used since the late 19th century, for buildings, in any of number of styles, in which emphasis in design is placed on functionalism, rationalism, and up‐to‐date methods of construction; in contrast with architectural styles based on historical precedents and traditional ways of building. Often includes Art Deco, Art Moderne, Bauhaus, Contemporary style, International Style, Organic architecture, and Streamline Moderne.” (Harris 217) The debate over traditional styles versus those without historic precedent had been occurring within the architectural community since the late 19th century when Louis Sullivan declared that form should follow function and Frank Lloyd Wright argued for a purely American expression of design that eschewed European influence. In 1940, as America was about to enter the middle decades of the 20th century, architects battled over the merits of traditional versus modern design. Both the traditional Period Revival, or conservative styles, and the early 20th‐century Modern styles lingered into the 1940s. Period revival styles, popular for decades, could still be found on commercial, governmental, institutional, and residential buildings. Among these styles were the Colonial Revival and its multiple variations, the Tudor Revival, and the Neo‐Classical Revival. As the century progressed, the Colonial Revival in particular would remain popular, used as ornament for Cape Cod and Ranch houses, apartment buildings, and commercial buildings.
