Thanks to our Member's dues, a substantial contribution from our most generous member and contributions from a couple of local patriotic organizations, we will end the year financially sound and feeling confident that we will be able to make any emergency repairs and continue to make improvements to the Museum. As reported in previous Scuttlebutts, most of our major projects have been completed. Our upgraded security system with motion activated cameras inside the Museum and outside the shed John Cecil should be completed this month. The construction of a concrete structure for the mid-1600s British Admiralty Cannon should be completed early next year. I hope everyone has a Merry Christmas and a New Year that is happy, healthy and prosperous. On this Christmas day let's all say a prayer for our troops that can't be home with families and loved ones. They are doing a great job of preventing the spread of terrorism and protecting our freedoms. Please say a prayer for their safe return home. The weeklong event on social media is a new way for the residents of New York City and the surrounding tri-state area to continue to take part in the annual celebration despite the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. “We know we will be back again one day, but until then we want to give you an opportunity to interact with us in the meantime,” Rear Adm. Charles W. Rock, Commander, Navy Region- Mid-Atlantic, said in a welcome video. “You’ll be able to see virtual ship tours, see some of our nation’s aircraft, hear our military bands play, ask questions of our men and women in uniform. Churchill: The Continuing Story JØRGEN SEVALDSEN The iconic position of Winston Churchill, the great statesman and orator (1874-1965), was confirmed in a very public and spectacular fashion when in 2002 a popular BBC poll made him a clear winner of the title of the Greatest Briton ever. With 28.1% of the final vote, he beat not only his nearest rival, the Victorian engineer Isambard Brunei (24.6%), but also celebrities better known outside Britain such as Shakespeare (6.8%) or Admiral Nelson (3%). This essay will look at other manifestations of the continued contemporary interest in Churchill and discuss why it is that his career, views and personality are still felt to be of contemporary relevance. The literature on Churchill is overwhelming and new biographies and monographs on aspects of his life are coming out every month. A visit to some of the most important Churchill web sites will confirm that the Churchill industry is alive and well. There are obvious reasons for this. Churchill's political career covered most of the 20* century, he held important ministerial posts in many governments, including the position as prime minister 1940-45 and 1951- 55, and he was, of course, a key player in British politics in the early phases of the Second World War when the fate of Britain and the future of the democracies of Western Europe was being decided. As an individual he was colourful and unpredictable, and there are so many military adventures and political and personal ups and downs in his life that it would seem impossible to write a dull biography of him. -

General History of Fort Jackson To understand the history of Fort Jackson, we must realize that the land surrounding the fort today is far different from what it was when European first saw the Savannah River. The river flowed through many marshy fields resembling a flat plain. The appearance of the area caused the founder of Georgia, General James Edward Oglethorpe, to name the river and town “Savannah,” meaning a treeless plain or relatively flat, open region. When early Indians built large ceremonial mounds near the river, they could not find dry land to build on closer than a mile from the river. One set of these mounds was located about 1600 yards southwest of the future site of Fort Jackson. No doubt General Oglethorpe noticed these mounds as he searched for high ground for his settlement in 1733. As the river flowed around present-day Hutchinson’s Island, the two channels rejoined north of a small clay island which rose just a few feet above the water at high tide. The convergence of these channels created a deepening to about 30 feet, more than ten feet deeper than normal. This part of the river became known as Five Fathom Hole. A few years later, an illiterate brick mason named Thomas Salter chose a site for a brickyard three miles east of the city on the south bank of the Savannah River where he hoped to earn a good living making bricks for housing foundations. The spot he chose was actually the small clay island. The brick-making trade was one of intense hand labor and has not changed in hundreds of years. -

An Island Worth Defending The Midway Atoll Presented by Steve Spiller Redlands Fortnightly Meeting #1748 May 10, 2007 An Island Worth Defending The Midway Atoll Introduction Families of World War II uniformed men and women, as a rule, had little understanding of their loved one’s experiences. Renewal of lives interrupted prevailed following the war. Memories emerged gradually as veterans reconnected to those with whom they fought side by side, as time lengthened and lost letters were found. Today, these memories provide an essential element to our appreciation of “The Greatest Generation.” One young Marine inspired me to research the Battle of Midway and the history preceding the events of June 4, 1942. For eighteen months, the tiny atoll west of Pearl Harbor was my father’s home. The island littered with guano that welcomed wealthy transpacific air passengers would defend itself in the battle that historians say rivals Trafalgar, Saratoga, and the Greek battle of Salamis. Marion Timothy Spiller stepped onto the extinct volcano in September 1941. The abandoned cauldron encircled by coral “with the most beautiful dawns and sunsets in the world” was his home through February 1943.1 The son of a Methodist minister, Marion’s enlistment in October 1939 provided the opportunity to leave the Midwest for the welcoming warmth of San Diego. Midway Description Twelve hundred and sixty nautical miles north-west of Pearl Harbor sits Midway Island, or more correctly, the Midway Atoll. Three fragments of land, surrounded by a reef five miles in diameter, are all that remain above the water’s surface of the age-old volcano. -
