AGRICULTURAL ENTERPRISE STUDIES IN ENGLAND AND WALES. University Departments of Agricultural Economics in England and Wales have for many years undertaken economic studies of crop and livestock enterprises, receiving financial and techr4cal support for this work from the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food. •The departments in different regions of the country conduct joint studies into those enterprises in which they have a particular interest. This community of interest is recognised by issuing enterprise reports prepared and published by individual departments in a common series entitled "Agricultural Enterprise Studies". Titles of recent publications in this series and the addresses of the Univprsity Departments are given at the end of this report. ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS. This report is based on financial and other data made available to the Agricultural Economics Department of the University of Newcastle upon Tyne by farmers who co-operated in the Farm Management Survey. Title 430 – National Soil Survey Handbook Part 629 – Glossary of Landform and Geologic Terms Subpart A – General Information 629.0 Definition and Purpose This glossary provides the NCSS soil survey program, soil scientists, and natural resource specialists with landform, geologic, and related terms and their definitions to— (1) Improve soil landscape description with a standard, single source landform and geologic glossary. (2) Enhance geomorphic content and clarity of soil map unit descriptions by use of accurate, defined terms. (3) Establish consistent geomorphic term usage in soil science and the National Cooperative Soil Survey (NCSS). (4) Provide standard geomorphic definitions for databases and soil survey technical publications. (5) Train soil scientists and related professionals in soils as landscape and geomorphic entities. 629.1 Responsibilities This glossary serves as the official NCSS reference for landform, geologic, and related terms. The staff of the National Soil Survey Center, located in Lincoln, NE, is responsible for maintaining and updating this glossary. Soil Science Division staff and NCSS participants are encouraged to propose additions and changes to the glossary for use in pedon descriptions, soil map unit descriptions, and soil survey publications. The Glossary of Geology (GG, 2005) serves as a major source for many glossary terms. The American Geologic Institute (AGI) granted the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (formerly the Soil Conservation Service) permission (in letters dated September 11, 1985, and September 22, 1993) to use existing definitions. Sources of, and modifications to, original definitions are explained immediately below. 629.2 Definitions A. The Project requires particular attention to the aesthetic and landscape architectural design elements that are incorporated into the project site plan. The landscape plantings shown on the Construction Drawings are conceptual in nature and were developed to convey the general landscape requirements for the site. The Owner will select a design-build professional landscape firm (Landscape Contractor) to design, supply and install the landscape plantings, vegetative groundcover, landscape irrigation and landscape lighting. An allowance is established for the landscaping for the Project. Refer to Section 01 21 13. The term "Contractor" as used in this Specification section shall refer to the Tank Contractor. B. This section includes the requirements for furnishing all labor, materials, equipment and services for the development of a landscape plan and for all trees, shrubs, ground covers, bedding, landscape lighting structures and luminaries, irrigation for all living materials installation, and related work required by the Specifications. C. Site amenities and Work such as, but not limited to, water service (including Hot Box and backflow preventer), pavement, curb and gutter, erosion control and permanent grassing of disturbed areas shall be the responsibility of the Contractor. It complements the Landscape Character Type descriptions of the 2019 dataset. The original character assessment reports, part of a series of 30, mostly for a local authority area, included a “Background Chapter” on the formation of the landscape. These documents have been revised because feedback said they are useful, despite the fact that other sources of information are now readily available on the internet, unlike in the 1990’s when the first versions were produced. The content of the chapters varied considerably between the reports, and it has been restructured into a more standard format: Introduction, Physical Influences and Human Influences for all areas; and Cultural Influences sections for the majority. Some content variation still remains as the documents have been revised rather than rewritten, The information has been updated with input from the relevant Local Authorities. The historic and cultural aspects have been reviewed and updated by Historic Environment Scotland. Gaps in information have been filled where possible. -

Burnswark Hill: the opening shot of the Antonine reconquest of Scotland? John H. Reid and Andrew Nicholson This paper represents an interim report of the Burnswark Project that has utilised the techniques of battlefield archaeology to locate and accurately identify missiles across a substantial field of conflict in SW Scotland. The distribution, characteristics, dating and proposed historical context of these missiles are argued to support their use in a dramatic episode of ‘exemplary force’ by the Roman army. The magnitude of the event might be seen to be compatible with an emperor establishing his legitimacy as a military leader. The complex of earthworks at Burnswark Hill near Ecclefechan in E. Dumfriesshire has excited the curiosity of antiquarians for centuries1 and provoked debate amongst his- torians and archaeologists for the last half-century.2 The imposing flat-topped summit is completely enclosed by the denuded ramparts of an Iron Age fort which, at 7 ha, is the larg- est in Dumfriesshire. Almost 300 m above sea level, the fort commands outstanding views of the Solway Basin and Annandale. Besides being the largest hillfort in SW Scotland, it is exceptional because it is held in the grip of two Roman camps of unusual morphol- ogy that straddle it to the north and south. The massive nature of the upstanding Roman earthworks, their extraordinary ‘artillery platforms’, and their positioning in relation to the hillfort are a unique juxtaposition in Europe. Archaeological investigations were first carried out in the late 19th c.; smaller-scale excavations took place in the early to mid-20th c., followed by the wide-ranging investigation by G.
