SIUE Men’s Basketball Assistant Coaches CHARLES “BUBBA” WELLS, ASSISTANT COACH The 2018-19 season marks the Ohio Valley Conference great and former NBA player’s fourth season on the Cougar basketball staff. He joined Jon Harris’ staff as an assistant coach in May 2015. Wells came to SIUE after spending 10 seasons on the staff at his alma mater, Austin Peay, where he is the all-time leading scorer with 2,267 points and is a member of the Athletics Hall of Fame. His No. 13 jersey is retired by the school. The Governors won OVC regular season championships in 2006-07 and 2007-08 with Wells as an assistant coach. The 2007-08 team won the OVC Tourna- ment title and advanced to the NCAA tournament, falling to second-seeded Texas in the first round. While a coach at Austin Peay, Wells worked with the Governors’ post players, a responsibility which will continue on the Cougar sidelines. Recently, Austin Peay centers Chris Horton (OVC All-Newcomer team 2012-13) and John Fraley (All-OVC second team 2011-12) and forward Drake Reed (All-OVC first team 2008-09) all have been honored by the OVC under Wells’ watch. The 2,267 career points ranks Wells as the fifth-leading scorer in OVC history. During his playing career, Wells earned three first-team All-OVC selections. He was the 1996 and 1997 OVC Male Athlete of the Year winner and the 1997 OVC Player of the Year in men’s basketball. He also was a two-time Austin Peay Outstanding Male Athlete in 1995-96 and 1996-97. As a player, Austin Peay won the OVC regular season title in 1997 and the 1996 OVC Tournament title, in which Wells was selected as the Tournament MVP. He con- tinues to hold OVC Tournament records for the most points in a game, scoring 43 against Morehead State in the 1997 tournament, and total points in the tournament (99 in 1997 tournament). He also holds the records for field goals made and attempted in a game as well as in a tournament. The native of Russellville, Kentucky, averaged 21.6 points per game, 7.1 rebounds per game and connected on 52 percent of his shots during his playing career. Wells earned his degree in Public Personnel Management from Austin Peay in 1997. He was then drafted by the Dallas Mavericks and played one season in the NBA. He also played professionally in the Philippines and Greece. He played two seasons for the Harlem Globetrotters. In August 2007, he married the former Tracee Jones, the former head women’s basketball coach at Tennessee State. Wells has one daughter, Alyiah, age 15, and one son, Chase Rishard, age 5, born to he and Tracee. BRIAN BARONE, ASSISTANT COACH Barone is in his second season as an assistant on the SIUE staff. He brings previous NCAA Division I experience as an assistant as well as stints as an as- sistant and head coach in the junior college ranks. Barone’s most recent Division I experience came at Green Bay under current Bradley head coach Brian Wardle. In five years on the Green Bay staff, Barone helped guide the Phoenix to a 95-65 overall record. In 2014-15, Green Bay posted a 24-7 record and claimed the Horizon League’s regular season championship. While at Green Bay, Barone was instrumental in the recruitment and development of two-time Horizon League Player of the Year Keifer Sykes and second round 2015 NBA Draft Pick Alec Brown. More than 10 Green Bay players from Barone’s tenure went on to play professionally. Prior to his time in Green Bay, Barone was on staff at Indiana University as the Hoosiers’ director of basketball operations/video coordinator where he worked under his college head coach Tom Crean. He began at IU in 2008 after serving the 2007-08 campaign as the coordinator of basketball operations and video coordinator at Marquette. He also founded Find A Way Consulting, a scouting and coaching consulting business. Find A Way has worked with the men’s basketball programs at Indiana, East Tennessee State, Loyola and Bradley. Barone’s first Division I coaching experience came at Illinois State. He spent four seasons (from 2003-04 through 2006-07) as an assistant coach for the Redbirds where he helped resurrect a program that had just eight wins the year prior to his arrival. He also has experience in the junior college ranks, with coaching stops at Butler Community College, Garden City Community College and Central Florida Community College. As a player, Barone played his first two seasons at Texas A&M, playing for his father Tony Barone, Sr. He earned honorable mention all-Big XII accolades as a sophomore fol- lowing the 1997-98 season when he finished among the league’s top five in assists and steals. He also received GTE Big XII Academic All-Conference accolades as well. He transferred to Marquette, where he played alongside Harris. Barone made his debut in 1999-00 after sitting out one season as a transfer. He served as team captain- dur ing his tenure and was also named to the Conference USA All-Academic Team. Barone earned his bachelor’s degree in communications from Marquette in 2000 and completed his master’s at MU in 2002. Basketball runs in Barone’s family. His father, Tony Sr., played at Duke and was the head coach at Creighton, Texas A&M and the NBA’s Memphis Grizzlies,as well as being the Director of Player Personnel for the Grizzlies. His brother, Tony, Jr., has been a college assistant coach, a Director of Scouting in the NBA, and currently is the assistant director for development and enforcement for men’s basketball with the NCAA. Barone and his wife, Mimi, have a son, Carson, and three daughters, Ava, Gianna and Cecilia. MIKE WALDO, ASSISTANT COACH Hall of Fame Coach Mike Waldo reunited with his former player, SIUE Head Coach Jon Harris, when he joined the SIUE men’s basketball staff in September 2018. Waldo spent 35 years as a head coach, including the last 30 at Edwardsville High School. The native of Granite City, Illinois, finished his career with a 727-266 record for a .732 winning percentage. He won 21 regional titles, seven sectional titles and 10 Southwestern Conference championships during his time at EHS. Prior to his time with the Tigers, Waldo was the head coach for five seasons at Alton Marquette High School. His teams won 81 games over five seasons and captured the school’s first regional title in 1988. He boasted four 30-win seasons and 21 20-win seasons during his time as a head coach. Harris was a standout for Waldo at Edwardsville, where he scored 1,269 points and was the St. Louis Post-Dispatch Player of the Year in 1998. Waldo is a graduate of SIUE and played two seasons of basketball for the Cougars. CASEY WYLLIE, DIRECTOR OF OPERATIONS Wyllie joined the SIUE men’s basketball program as its director of basketball operations in July 2017. A native of Dwight, Illinois, Wyllie joins the SIUE staff after serving as a graduate assistant at Louisiana Tech. Wyllie assisted the Director of Operations at Louisiana Tech in the day-to-day operations of the program by planning weekly schedules, while also coordi- nating academics and travel arrangements. In addition to his typical office responsibilities, he also helped organize the program’s recruiting efforts and summer basketball camps. He earned his master’s in Kinesiology with a concentration in Administration of Sport and Physical Activity from Louisiana Tech in November 2017. He earned an associate’s degree of construction management in applied science from John A. Logan College in 2012. During his time at John A. Logan, he worked as the junior varsity boys’ basketball coach at Elverado High School in Elkville, Illinois. While earning a bachelor’s degree from SIU Carbondale from 2012 to 2015, Wyllie gained valuable coaching experience as the head freshman boys’ basketball coach at Benton High School. He recorded a 43-23 record during that time, including a perfect 21-0 record in his third season. Wyllie was an outstanding prep player in his own right.
