Abstract: It cannot be contested that Big Boss, a show which has garnered such popular success and enormous mass appeal has subscribed to the process of ‘glocalization’—simultaneously combining the universal format of the show to the particularities of the Indian socio-cultural milieu in order to cater to the ethos, values, and tastes of the Indian audience. As such, apart from the hallmark traits of the parent version, such as appealing to the human voyeuristic tendencies, Big Boss has routinely capitalised on certain idiosyncrasies of Indian society. These may include but aren’t limited to: sexual frustration; penchant for melodrama; maudlin tendencies; hyper voyeurism or ogling. This paper attempts to examine how the ‘gaze’ that is so central to the framework of Big Brother is modified and some features of it even amplified in Big Boss in relation to the above mentioned elements and ‘glocalization’. The paper will depend on theories of gaze in critical discourse such as Lacanian psychoanalysis, Laura Mulvey’s idea of scopophilia, Foucauldian theory of gaze and power, and notions of imperial/post-colonial gaze, among others. This was higher than 7.2% economic growth recorded in FY2015, buoyed by improved agricultural performance and growth in consumption. Economic OVERVIEW GLOBAL ECONOMY Calendar Year 2015 (CY2015) has been challenging and difficult year for the global economy. Global growth is said to pick up after a number of weak years (global economic activity remained subdued in CY2015). Global growth, estimated at 3.1% in CY2015, is projected to improve to 3.4% in CY2016 and 3.7% in CY2017. The pick-up in global activity is projected to be more gradual, especially in the emerging markets and the developing economies. In its semi-annual World Economic Outlook, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) stated that the world economy is facing the threat of a synchronised slowdown and mounting risks including another bout of financial market turmoil, and a political backlash against globalisation. Worldwide, demand remained weak and the recent volatility in financial markets highlighted an uncertain international outlook, especially in China. “The emerging economies are slowing down, apart from India which is “doing pretty well”, Christine Lagarde, the chief of the International Monetary Fund stated. The pace of global GDP growth remained slow, driven by a collusion of multiple factors such as volatility and rebalancing in the Chinese economy. A drop in oil and other commodity prices, slowdown in emerging economies, and slow pick-up in major developed economies also contributed to the slow growth.

Dr. Sheetal Thapar, Associate Professor, Department of Agriculture Journalism, Languages and Culture, Punjab Agricultural University, LUDHIANA (PUNJAB) INDIA. ABSTRACT A Study on 120 rural women of Ludhiana district was conducted to explore their pattern of film, soap operas and reality show consumption. The respondents, who were mostly in the age range of 30-50 years and educated at least upto secondary level, cited daily soaps and films as their most preferred genres. Comedy was found to be the most popular theme of TV programmes among rural women of Ludhiana, while themes like documentaries or agriculture were relegated to position of lesser importance. The respondents mostly treated TV as a source of entertainment rather than an instrument of information. It is important to note that information consumption, with or without the component of entertainment, is a pre-requisite for democratization of information. Key Words: Rural women, Ludhiana, Soap operas, Films, Reality shows, Comedy, information INTRODUCTION The Supreme Court ruling of 1995 which stated that the airwaves are not the monopoly of the Indian government, boosted the growth of new TV channels. Apart from the regional channels, a host of international channels like CNN, BBC and Discovery are now available to the Indian television audience. With different categories of channels like 24 hour news channels, religious channels, cartoon channels and movie channels, there is something for everyone to watch.
