    <BillNo> <Sponsor> SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION 517 By Gilmore A RESOLUTION to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the passage of Public Chapter 95 of 1921. WHEREAS, on April 5, 1921, Governor Alfred A. Taylor signed into law Senate Bill 737, which became Public Chapter 95 of 1921, a law that gave the women of Tennessee the right to hold public office; and WHEREAS, less than thirty years earlier, on April 29, 1893, the Tennessee Supreme Court had declared in State ex rel. v. Davidson, 92 Tenn 531; 22 S.W. 203, that "By the English or common law, no woman, under the dignity of a queen, could take part in the government of the State, and they could hold no office except parish office…"; and WHEREAS, the Tennessee Supreme Court further stated that "Although a woman may be a citizen, she is not entitled, by virtue of her citizenship, to take any part in the government, either as a voter or as an officer, independent of legislation conferring such rights upon her…. It follows that unless there is some constitutional or legislative provision enabling her to hold office, she is not eligible to the same"; and WHEREAS, in short, such ruling declared that although a woman was a citizen of the State, she had no right to vote or hold any elected office; and WHEREAS, on April 17, 1919, Governor A. H.     Speaker Biographies Bench Bar Program Judge Ken Starr Is best known as the independent counsel who headed the investigation that led to the impeachment of U.S. President Bill Clinton. In 1994 Starr was named the independent counsel to lead the investigation into the so-called Whitewater affair, which involved a land deal in Arkansas during the time Clinton was that state’s governor. As a result of the investigation, 11 people—including Clinton associates James and Susan McDougal — were convicted of crimes. He subsequently was directed to investigate what came to be known as Travelgate, involving the firing of longtime White House workers, and Filegate, pertaining to FBI files on Republicans that were found in the White House. In 1998, however, allegations of an affair between Clinton and White House intern Monica Lewinsky became the focus of Starr’s attention. Based on Starr’s findings, the House of Representatives voted to impeach the president in December 1998. The Senate acquitted Clinton the following year. Chief Justice Jeff Bivins Took office as a member of the Tennessee Supreme Court in 2014. He was appointed to this position by Gov. Bill Haslam. He was elected to the remainder of the full term in August 2016. Effective Sept. 1, 2016, his colleagues elected him to the position of Chief Justice. Prior to his appointment to the Tennessee Supreme Court, Justice Bivins was a judge on the Tennessee Court of Criminal Appeals. He is a graduate of Vanderbilt University School of Law. He received a bachelor’s degree, magna cum laude from East Tennessee State University, with a major in political science and a minor in criminal justice.

    1 Verizon Political Activity January – December 2017 A Message from Craig Silliman Verizon is affected by a wide variety of government policies -- from telecommunications regulation to taxation to health care and more -- that have an enormous impact on the business climate in which we operate. We owe it to our shareowners, employees and customers to advocate public policies that will enable us to compete fairly and freely in the marketplace. Political contributions are one way we support the democratic electoral process and participate in the policy dialogue. Our employees have established political action committees at the federal level and in 18 states. These political action committees (PACs) allow employees to pool their resources to support candidates for office who generally support the public policies our employees advocate. This report lists all PAC contributions, corporate political contributions, support for ballot initiatives and independent expenditures made by Verizon and its affiliates during 2017. The contribution process is overseen by the Corporate Governance and Policy Committee of our Board of Directors, which receives a comprehensive report and briefing on these activities at least annually. We intend to update this voluntary disclosure twice a year and publish it on our corporate website. We believe this transparency with respect to our political spending is in keeping with our commitment to good corporate governance and a further sign of our responsiveness to the interests of our shareowners.
