DONALD M0RRIS CROTHERS January 28, 1937–March 16, 2014 Elected to the NAS, 1987 Don Crothers spent his career studying the structure and physical properties of nucleic acids and the complexes they form with other molecules. In recognition of his many contributions to this field, he was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 1987. In addition to being an outstanding scientist, Don was a gifted teacher whose wisdom was much appreciated by his students and research colleagues. Don served his institution, Yale University, and its Department of Chemistry, with great distinction. He was chairman of the department for a total of 12 years (1975–1981; 1994–2000), and by the end of his career, his title was Sterling Professor, the highest By Peter B. Moore, honor that Yale can bestow on a faculty member. David Eisenberg, Don was also a successful scientific entrepreneur, a and Jason Kahn valued consultant to biotech companies, an author of monographs and textbooks, a loving family man, an avid appreciator of music, literature, and fine vintages, and a polyglot comfortable in German, French, and Finnish. Early years Don was born to Morris and Florence Crothers in Fatehgarh, India, where his father was working as a medical missionary for the Presbyterian Church. In 1939, the Crothers family returned to the United States; and in 1942, following his mother’s untimely death and his father’s remarriage, the family moved to Salem, OR, where Don grew up. -

Moqué pour son look, méprisé pour sa musique sans guitare, Depeche Mode a néanmoins rapidement réussi à populariser une pop synthétique irrésistible, dansante et cérébrale à la fois, faisant résonner des textes désenchantés sur les dancefloors du monde entier – et ouvrant la voie à toute une vague d’artistes new-wave et synthpop. Ce qui fascine surtout, c’est que Depeche Mode, contrairement à de nombreux groupes ayant aussi connu le succès dans les années 1980, a su perdurer. Malgré des épreuves et des tourments personnels, le groupe a traversé les époques en restant au sommet. Il a fait mûrir sa musique en revenant aux guitares – sans jamais renier l’apport des claviers –, il ne s’est jamais laissé submerger par les modes successives – techno, house, electro… Au contraire, Depeche Mode a su renouveler sa pop en y incorporant les sons du moment, en s’entourant de remixeurs et producteurs pointus et dans l’air du temps. Le groupe n’a cessé de sortir des albums solides et cohérents qui, sans prendre une ride, se sont même bonifiés avec le temps. Signe de sa crédibilité, Depeche Mode a d’ailleurs toujours servi de référent et d’influence à ses contemporains, cité autant par les indus Nine Inch Nails que par le psychédélique Jonathan Wilson. -

And though the ninety-plus-minute set was heavy on the atmospherics, the Banshees' roots in punk ("art punk," as some clever music guidebook writers like to distinguish it) weren't entirely neglected, either.
