Roi,’ Grand Cru, Aloxe-Corton, Burgundy 2016 3 oz. $50 6 oz. $90 Designated a Grand Cru in 1937, this wine was already well-known in the 15th century when the King of France added Corton wines to his personal cellars. Upon the death of Charles le Téméraire, the final duke of Burgundy, this parcel of vines passed into the hands of the royal winemakers and therefore became Corton "Clos du Roi" (plot [of land] of the king). Egon Müller ‘Scharzhofberger,’ Spätlese, Mosel-Saar-Ruwer, Germany 2014 3 oz. $48 6 oz. $86 The Scharzhofberg, or Scharzhof Mountain, is among the finest Riesling sites in Germany and is considered Grand Cru. As such, it is allowed to be labeled with its vineyard name, or “Einzellage”, rather than its village name. The Müller holdings here include a parcel of un-grafted vines that were planted in the 19th century. These wines deliver at the highest level of quality and are without question among the world’s greatest wines. Nikolaihof ‘Vinothek,’ Wachau, Austria 2002 3 oz. $52 6 oz. $94 The Vinothek cuvée is the philosophical apotheoses of the Demeter Certified Nikolaihof estate. Though Nikolaihof commonly holds back their wines until they believe they have fully developed, the Vinothek cuvée is extreme for even these standards. Harvested in 2002 from the Im Weingebirge site (the oldest named site in Europe 470 A.D.), this wine rested in barrel for 17 years in Nikolaihof’s ancient, Roman-built cellar. This profoundly extended barrel aging along with the inherent distance of it’s vintage creates a singular wine not to be experienced elsewhere. Vinothek is the only dry Riesling to receive a 100 pt. score from Robert Parker. Gunderloch ‘Nachenheim Rothenberg’ Beerenauslese, Rheinhessen 2004 3 oz. $48 6 oz. $86 Gunderloch is a thriving estate, consisting of approximately 25ha of vines in the "Roter Hang" ("red slope") area of the Rhein- hessen appellation. The average yield is held to 45 hl/ha, among the lowest in Germany, resulting in wines of high extraction and great quality.

Schloss Johannisberg, Rheingau, Riesling Trocken 'Bronze Seal' 2020 Delicate floral aromas of white stone fruits, lime notes, Awards green pears and a touch of minerality lead to a refreshing 95 pts, James Suckling, 2021 and cleansing palate. Classic and expressive dry Riesling. Producer Note The legendary Schloss Johannisberg is steeped in history. The vineyards were planted on the orders of the Roman Emperor Charlemagne. Planted solely with Riesling grapes in 1720, Schloss Johannisberg was the world's first Riesling Estate and plays a significant part in wine history. It was here in 1775 that the Spätlese quality was discovered using late picked grapes suffering from "noble rot". Following this discovery, in 1787 the estate gave Auslese, Beerenauslese and Trockenbeerenauslese to the wine world. Schloss Johannisberg is a single vineyard designation in its own right and one of a handful of German vineyards that does not have to display a village name on the label. Vineyard The grapes come from the single vineyard of Schloss Johannisberg. The south facing vineyard is steep, with a 45° gradient and is situated at between 114 metres to 181 metres above sea level. The forest on the top of the Taunus Mountains protects the vineyard from cold winds from the north. To the south, the River Rhine gently flows in front of the estate, in the foothills of the vineyard. The 50° parallel runs directly through the vineyard and the unique soils of Taunus quartz, topped with loam and rich loess retains moisture and heat, encouraging the vines to ripen. This soil formation imparts the classic mineral characteristic which is evident in this wine.

This was an increase from the 7.5% share in 2011. Market share of bottles priced ¥500 JPY ($6.33) or under and ¥1000 – 1500 JPY ($12.66 – 18.99 USD) continue to increase. Bulk wine imports continue to grow as domestic Japanese wine companies bottle their own wine. Executive Summary: Executive Summary Distribution of Japanese bottled wine is approximately 900 thousand hectoliters. This plus 1.81 million hectoliters of imported bottled wines totaled 2.71 million hectoliters of wine distributed in Japan. The Japanese wine market continues to be very competitive. Although 50 countries supply wine to Japan, ten countries account for approximately 96% of the imported volume. On-premise consumption continues to increase as the Japanese economy improves and wine becomes more generally affordable. Upscale Japanese izakaya restaurants are performing quite well, and standing wine bars are becoming more popular, particularly among middle-aged and older men. Off-premise o Off-premise consumption has increased as well. Supermarkets are carrying more inexpensive (under ¥1000 JPY or $12.66) wines, and premium wines are increasingly being consumed from online sources.

THIS REPORT CONTAINS ASSESSMENTS OF COMMODITY AND TRADE ISSUES MADE BY USDA STAFF AND NOT NECESSARILY STATEMENTS OF OFFICIAL U.S. GOVERNMENT POLICY Voluntary - Public Date: 2/5/2019 GAIN Report Number: JA9501 Japan Post: Tokyo ATO Japan Wine Market Overview Report Categories: Market Development Reports Product Brief Beverages Approved By: Barrett Bumpas, Deputy Director Prepared By: Sumio Thomas Aoki, Marketing Specialist; Rie Negishi, Intern Report Highlights: Wine consumption in Japan has risen steadily over the last decade. Imports were valued at $1.65 billion in 2018, and account for nearly seventy percent of the market. The United States is the fourth largest supplier on a value basis at $129 million, yet holds only eight percent of total import market; overshadowed by $925 million in exports from France. Chile is the largest supplier on a volume basis, at 77.9 million liters. U.S. bottled wine imports were valued at $116 million, with a unit value of $16.14/L. The United States is also the second largest supplier of bulk wine at $10.9 million. Many U.S. competitors have reached Economic Partnership Agreements (EPA) with Japan that include advantageous tariff concessions for wine; many of which will take effect in 2019. General Information: According to Japan National Tax Agency data, consumption of wine is up over the last decade, along with whiskey and liquors, while the consumption of beer, Happoshu (a Japanese low-malt beer), Shochu (Japanese spirits), and Sake have all fallen. According to industry sources, in 2017, Japan’s total wine consumption was 376.6 million liters, sixty-nine percent of which was imported.

  • Rieslings Since 1720 Schloss Johannisberg Is Celebrating “300 Years of Riesling”
Press release Rieslings since 1720 Schloss Johannisberg is celebrating “300 Years of Riesling” Schloss Johannisberg in the Rheingau region is the first Riesling estate in the world and now combines nearly 1,200 years of wine-making history with exactly 300 years of world-class Riesling tradition. The estate with the oldest single- variety Riesling vineyard wants to celebrate this anniversary year with a varied programme of events and, in the second half of the year, also plans to invite visitors to celebrate the popular grape and its many exceptional Riesling wines together. Exclusive Riesling grower since 1720 The Schloss Johannisberg estate can look back on an eventful history that has resulted in a unique wine-making culture: Established as a Benedictine monastery in around 1100, the Johannisberger Abbey quickly became the focal point and initiator of wine-growing in the Rheingau region. In 1716, the already famous but neglected vineyard was passed to the Princely Abbey of Fulda under Prince Abbot Konstantin von Buttlar, who revitalised it from the ground up and attempted a major viticultural experiment: He replanted the estate’s vineyards with only the noblest grape in the world, the Riesling. Around 300,000 new vines were planted over the following two years. This is how the world’s first cohesive Riesling vineyard was created in 1720. Real gems from 300 years of Riesling history To this day, the oldest Schloss Johannisberger Riesling – a 1748 vintage – still lies in the Bibliotheca Subterranea, the 900-year-old cellarium and the estate’s treasure trove. Alongside are numerous precious Riesling wines created by the estate’s cellarmasters over the past 300 years.
