Despiteconvergent margins being unstablesystems, most reports of huge submarineslope failure havecome from oceanicvolcanoes and passivemargins. Swath bathymetryand seismicprofiles of the northernHikurangi subduction system, New Zealand,show a tapering65-30 km wideby 65 km deepmargin indentation, with a giant,3150+_630 km 3, blocky, debrisavalanche deposit projecting 40 km out acrosshorizontal trench fill, and a debris flow depositprojecting over 100 km. Slide blocksare well-bedded,up to 18 km acrossand 1.2 km high,the largestbeing at the avalanchedeposit's leading edge. Samples dredged from themare mainly Miocene shelfcalc-mudstones similar to thoseoutcropping around the indentation.Cores from coverbeds suggest that failure occurred-170 +_40ka, possiblysynchronously with a major extensioncollapse in the upperindentation. However, the northernpart of the indentationis much older.The steep,straight northern wall is closeto the directionof plate convergenceand probably formedaround 2.0-0.16 Ma as a largeseamount subducted, leaving in its wake a deepgroove obliquelyacross the marginand an unstabletriangle of fracturedrock in the 60ø anglebetween grooveand oversteepenedmargin front. The trianglecollapsed as a blockyavalanche, leaving a scallopedsouthern wall andprobably causing a largetsunami. Tentative calculations of compacted volumessuggest that the indentation is over 600 km 3 largerthan the avalanche, supporting a two- stageorigin that includes subduction erosion. Since failure, convergence has carried the deposits -9 km back towardthe margin,causing internal compression. The eventualsubduction/accretion of the Ruatoriaavalanche explains the scarcityof suchfeatures on activemargins and perhapsthe nature of olistostromes in fold belts. 1. This is the largest known deciduous tree in New Zealand and one of the largest poplars in the world. Growth appears to be declining as since 1969 diameter has increased by only 4 cm and there has been little if any·height growth. These schools cover the whole of New Zealand. In 1969 the Maori Schools were integrated into the State System. Since then some of the former Maori schools have transferred their records to Archives New Zealand Auckland. Building and Site Files (series 1001) For most schools we hold a Building and Site file. These usually give information on: • the acquisition of land, specifications for the school or teacher’s residence, sometimes a plan. • letters and petitions to the Education Department requesting a school, providing lists of families’ names and ages of children in the local community who would attend a school. (Sometimes the school was never built, or it was some years before the Department agreed to the establishment of a school in the area). The files may also contain other information such as: • initial Inspector’s reports on the pupils and the teacher, and standard of buildings and grounds; • correspondence from the teachers, Education Department and members of the school committee or community; • pre-1920 lists of students’ names may be included. There are no Building and Site files for Church/private Maori schools as those organisations usually erected, paid for and maintained the buildings themselves. Admission Registers (series 1004) provide details such as: - Name of pupil - Date enrolled - Date of birth - Name of parent or guardian - Address - Previous school attended - Years/classes attended - Last date of attendance - Next school or destination Attendance Returns (series 1001 and 1006) provide: - Name of pupil - Age in years and months - Sometimes number of days attended at time of Return Log Books (series 1003) Written by the Head Teacher/Sole Teacher this daily diary includes important events and various activities held at the school.

    TE AWAROA: RESTORING NEW ZEALAND RIVERS RESEARCH REPORT 3: WAIMATA RIVER SHERIDAN GUNDRY THE WAIMATA RIVER: SETTLER HISTORY POST 1880 The Waimata River – Settler History post 1880 Sheridan Gundry, Te Awaroa Project Report No. 3 Land within the Waimata River catchment, comprising about 220 square kilometres1, began to be available for purchase after the passing of the Native Lands Act 1865 and subsequent land surveys and issuing of legal Crown title. The lower reaches of the Waimata River – including parts of the Kaiti, Whataupoko and Pouawa blocks – were the first to go into European ownership from around 1880, when John and Thomas Holden bought the 7000 acre Rimuroa block; the Hansen brothers bought about 8000 acres comprising Horoeka, Maka and Weka; Bennet bought the 1100 acre Kanuka block; and Charles Gray, the Waiohika block. The next year, in 1881, the Kenway brothers bought the 3000-acre Te Pahi further upriver. The Kenways gave the property the name Te Pahi, meaning The End, because at the time it was at the end of the road with nothing beyond.2 This soon changed with further purchases of Maori land beyond Te Pahi continuing through to the late 1890s. Further land became available in the south, east and north Waimata with the New Zealand Native Land Settlement Company offering about 20,000 acres for sale in late 1882. The blocks “conveyed to the company” were approved by the Trust Commissioner and titles were to be registered under the Land Transfer Act.3 The areas involved were Waimata South, 9,555; Waimata East, 4,966; Waimata North, 4,828.

The following trends in mean bed levels have been derived from cross section surveys by the former East Cape Catchment Board and the Gisborne District Council, commencing in 1958. Trends have been assessed starting at the most upstream cross section, EC518, approximately 21 kilometres upstream of the confluence with the Mata River. “Mean bed levels ” has a specific meaning in relation to braided rivers on the east coast, and a full definition is provided in the Addendum. Cross section surveys are only a “snapshot” of the river bed levels at a specific location on a particular day. Because of the movement of bed load material in “waves” during floods and freshes, there are frequent naturally occurring fluctuations in mean bed levels. While long term trends in mean bed levels are reasonably reliable indicators of bed level change, shorter term trends (ie; from surveys over ten years or less) are not reliable and it would be unwise to rely on these surveys alone. 2.0 The Makarika stream catchment: The Makarika stream runs approximately parallel to SH35 from Te Puia to its confluence with the Mata River, a short distance west of Ruatoria; see figure 1. The stream is approximately 28 kilometres in length, and has a catchment area of 80.9 square kilometres.

    Asset Management Plan 2014 – 2024 1 April 2014 Summary Summary of ENL’s AMP Purpose of the AMP This Asset Management Plan (“AMP”) has been prepared to meet regulatory compliance requirements, demonstrate responsible asset stewardship, integrate stakeholder views, and communicate and justify network management practice and expenditure to Eastland Network Limited (“ENL”) stakeholders. Presentation of the AMP in this format also meets the requirements of the Electricity Distribution Information Disclosure Determination 2012. Primary stakeholders include ENL’s shareholder and customers, including retailers, generators and end-use electricity consumers. Other parties with an interest in ENL’s asset management include contractors who physically work on the system and regulatory agencies. Many factors impact on the effective long term management of a complex network of electricity assets, the life of which exceeds the tenure of the Managers responsible for them and whose operating environment introduces significant investment risks. For this reason, the overall scope of the AMP is wide, covering the regulatory environment, future service demands and technology development. While making long term forecasts to provide sustainability and establish the framework for ENL’s future, the AMP primarily drives work programs in the short to medium term. It is in all respects a living document. The practices and processes described are subject to continuous improvement, and detailed work programs are progressively refined throughout the year. The Eastland Group asset management team is the “owner” of this AMP. Completion date & planning period Preparation of the AMP was undertaken between January 2014 and March 2014. The ten year planning period considered is from 01 April 2014 to 31 March 2024.
