Performers like SummerStage veteran Patti Smith, an icon of the city’s resilient rebelliousness, Brooklyn’s Antibalas, who have married afrobeat with New York City’s Latin soul, and hip hop duo Armand Hammer, two of today’s most important leaders of New York’s rap underground. 1 FALL 2021 MUN 1xxx - section TBA World Music Ensemble – African Popular Music Ensemble Tuesdays (7:20 PM-9:10 PM) at the School of Music Dr. Sarah Politz, [email protected] Office: Yon Hall 435 Office hours: TBA Credits: 1.0 credit hours The African Popular Music Ensemble will specialize in the popular music of the African continent, with a special focus on Afrobeat, highlife, soukous, African jazz, and the brass band traditions of Africa and the diaspora. Together we will listen to, perform, and arrange music from the works of Fela Kuti (Nigeria), Salif Keita (Mali), Hugh Masekela, Abdullah Ibrahim, Miriam Makeba (South Africa), Mulatu Astatke (Ethiopia), and the Gangbe Brass Band of Benin. Instrumentation will vary based on personnel each semester, and will typically include a rhythm section, horn section, and vocal soloists. The ensemble will also draw on the participation of faculty performers, as well as guest artists specializing in African popular music from the community and beyond. These collaborations will contribute to the diversity of musical and cultural experiences related to Africa that are available to students throughout the semester. Course Objectives The African Popular Music Ensemble is dedicated to learning African culture through musical performance. After completion of this course, students will be able to perform in a variety of African popular music styles on their instrument. These skills will be developed through a combination of listening to recordings, developing skills in listening and blending within the ensemble, and individual study and practice outside of rehearsals. Students who wish to develop their skills in improvisation will have many opportunities to do so.

ANTIBALAS BIO It’s hard to believe that more than twenty years have passed since Antibalas’s humble beginning as a neighborhood dance / protest band in the block parties and underground parties in pre-gentrified Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Over the past two decades they have evolved into what The Guardian called “one of the world’s finest Afrobeat bands” while enjoying equal renown for their cross-genre collaborations with legends of popular music. With a heavy balance of experience and new blood, the group leaps into 2020 with their new Daptone Records full- length “Fu Chronicles.” Founded in 1998 by saxophonist Martín Perna, early incarnations of the group included several members of The Dap-Kings including bassist / producer Gabriel Roth, guitarist Binky Griptite, keyboardist Victor Axelrod, conguero Fernando “Bugaloo Velez,” and trumpeter Anda Szilagyi. As the group expanded, it absorbed younger musicians from the Daptone family including bassist Nick Movshon (El Michels, Black Keys) and other musical natives and transplants from downtown Manhattan and North Brooklyn music scenes. In 1999, Perna and Roth dropped in at an atelier / dojo belonging to Duke Amayo. They invited him to a neighborhood concert and then reached out to him later as an emergency substitute for a show. Amayo soon became a fixture in the group, first on percussion, then later on vocals, vibraphone, and keyboards and moving to center stage as the group’s frontman and creating the Afro-Spot, the band’s headquarters as well as the home of the first Daptone Records studio. Over the next few years, the band performed several times a month throughout NYC at the Afro-Spot, at benefits, lofts, block parties, and at their Lower Manhattan weekly residency called “Africalia” with regular appearances by friends including Sharon Jones, Lee Fields, and The Sugarman Three.

En cambio, es un disco sorprendente y embrujador. Se trata de Cochemea Gastelum, saxofonista miembro de los Dap-Kings de Sharon Jones, que deslumbra con un álbum de jazz y world music en el que no falta el toque exótico, y en el que escucha el instinto de su propia sangre (apache y yaqui). Gastelum está secundado por una decena de músicos, que bajo su batuta y la de Gabe Roth grabaron las diez canciones del disco conﬁando mayormente en la improvisación. Aunque la base no deja de ser el jazz, Latin, el funk y el rock, lo que escuchamos en las canciones de All My Relations es un embriagador estilo en el que el artista, a través de la música, trata de encontrar sus propias raíces raciales.
