Vegetation Report on the Proposed Blue Hole Cultural, Environmental & Recreation Reserve Report on the Vegetation of the Proposed Blue Hole Cultural, Environmental & Recreation Reserve 1.0 Introduction The area covered by this report is described as the proposed Lot 1 on SP144713; Parish of Alexandra; being an unregistered plan prepared by the C & B Group for the Douglas Shire Council. This proposed Lot has an area of 1.394 hectares and consists of the Flame Tree Road Reserve and part of a USL, which is a small portion of the bed of Cooper Creek. It is proposed that the Flame Tree Road Reserve and part of the USL be transferred to enable the creation of a Cultural, Environmental and Recreation Reserve to be managed in Trust by the Douglas Shire Council. The proposed Cultural, Environmental and Recreation Reserve will have an area of 1.394 hectares and will if the plan is registered become Lot 1 of SP144713; Parish of Alexandra; County of Solander. A total of 14 sample plots was established, each sample plot of 500m2 (25m x 20m) and randomly distributed through tropical evergreen broad-leaved humid low mountain forest and tropical broad- leaved dry forest state. Two main contents were carried out: (i) Determine taxa diversity, life-forms, parts used, disease groups, threatened medicinal plants, (ii) identify diverse indicators of medicinal plants. The results showed that a total of 55 medicinal plant species, 50 genera, 36 families of 3 phyla was found in Nui Chua National Park. Among them, 9 threatened species was listed in the Vietnam Red Data Book (2007), and the IUCN Red List (2019). The life-forms of medicinal plants were recorded as woody plant, herbaceous, shrubs, epiphyte, and vines. -

The study compares carbon stocks from five carbon pools by the mode of origin (natural vs planted forests) and ecological functions (Special use, Protection and Production forests) of the forests. An intensive forest carbon inventory was conducted in six communes of Dinh Hoa district, Vietnam. Soil organic carbon (SOC) was found to be the largest carbon pool. Mean SOC densities were not significantly different between natural forests and planted forests, but were significantly different among different forest types classified based on ecological functions. When considering the total of all carbon pools, mean carbon densities were neither significantly different between natural and planted forests, nor among Special use, Protection and Production forests. Our study provides evidence that different FLR interventions may provide equivalent potentials for increasing forest carbon stocks. -

Plant Biodiversity Science, Discovery, and Conservation: Case Studies from Australasia and the Pacific Craig Costion School of Earth and Environmental Sciences Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology University of Adelaide Adelaide, SA 5005 Thesis by publication submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology July 2011 ABSTRACT This thesis advances plant biodiversity knowledge in three separate bioregions, Micronesia, the Queensland Wet Tropics, and South Australia. A systematic treatment of the endemic flora of Micronesia is presented for the first time thus advancing alpha taxonomy for the Micronesia-Polynesia biodiversity hotspot region. The recognized species boundaries are used in combination with all known botanical collections as a basis for assessing the degree of threat for the endemic plants of the Palau archipelago located at the western most edge of Micronesia’s Caroline Islands. A preliminary assessment is conducted utilizing the IUCN red list Criteria followed by a new proposed alternative methodology that enables a degree of threat to be established utilizing existing data. Historical records and archaeological evidence are reviewed to establish the minimum extent of deforestation on the islands of Palau since the arrival of humans. This enabled a quantification of population declines of the majority of plants endemic to the archipelago. In the state of South Australia, the importance of establishing concepts of endemism is emphasized even further. A thorough scientific assessment is presented on the state’s proposed biological corridor reserve network. The report highlights the exclusion from the reserve system of one of the state’s most important hotspots of plant endemism that is highly threatened from habitat fragmentation and promotes the use of biodiversity indices to guide conservation priorities in setting up reserve networks. -

L'expédition d’exploration des canopées forestières a été menée dans la région karstique de la province de Khammouane, dans la réserve nationale de conservation de la biodiversité Phou Hin Poun (National Biodiversity Conservation Area NBCA PHP, 17.746° N, 104.8° E). Les collectes botaniques ont été effectuées en 2012 au cours de deux missions de terrain de deux semaines chacune, en janvier pendant la saison sèche et en mai au début de la saison des pluies. Au total 804 spécimens ont été récoltés au cours de ces deux périodes. Les collections de plantes (environ 2 500 échantillons, ayant trois duplicata pour la plupart d’entre eux) représentent environ 500 espèces. Le travail d'identification est toujours en cours. À ce jour, 642 spécimens ont été identifiés au niveau du genre et 52% (334 spécimens) identifiés au niveau de l'espèce. -
