PRO-LIFE CORNER (Excerpt from Catholic News Service)

Activists who oppose the death penalty said the Justice Department’s temporary stop of federal executions is a step in the right direction, but it doesn’t go far enough. The order, given by Attorney General Merrick Garland on July 1, reverses the previous administration’s decision to resume executions of federal death-row inmates after a 17 year pause. In a 6 month period from last summer to the beginning of this year, thirteen federal executions took place. Krisanne Vaillancourt Murphy, Executive Director of Catholic Mobilizing Network, the National Catholic organization working to end the death penalty, felt the decision was “a step in the right direction” but the immoral use of the death penalty should be dismantled. Two committee chairmen of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops issued a July 3rd statement emphasizing the need to “tirelessly continue to advocate for the abolition of the death penalty from both our state and federal laws as we build a culture of life. The has consistently taught that every person is created in the image and likeness of God, and for this reason we consistently uphold the sacred dignity of all human life.” This is in union with Pope Francis, who has also advocated for an end to capital punishment globally, said Archbishop Paul Coakley of Oklahoma City, chairman of the committee on Domestic Justice and Human Development, and Archbishop Joseph Naumann of Kansas City, Kansas, chairman of the committee on Pro-Life Activities.
