These studies also have artificially separated the multiple failed attempts into the story of either Sierra Leone or Liberia. This dissertation, for the first time, looks comprehensively and comparatively at the transatlantic propaganda campaign that accompanied each wave of support and resulting failures and the part it played in the success of the abolition movement. Ever marching westward from its London roots, recolonization’s boosters repeatedly tried to build on an imagined community that had little to do with the realities in West Africa. At its heart, the propaganda campaign offered a chance to avoid the perceived problems with a bi-racial society and the expected economic collapse with the end of slave-based capitalism. Recolonization, rather than integration, was the perceived solution to the fears of the destruction of the white race at the hands of their black-skinned countrymen. However, the men and women at the heart of the migration scheme consistently showed their ii unwillingness to continue to be used as pawns. Understanding the full scope of recolonization shows that for both the few that went to Africa and the majority that stayed behind, white colonization schemes proved useful for creating a space for black-skinned people to negotiate autonomy in the white-dominated Atlantic World. While each attempt had mixed success at best at relocating people to West Africa, recolonization played an indispensable role in advancing support for the cause of abolition even with each failure. iii Copyright by Daniel Jason Degges 2020 iv DEDICATION This dissertation is dedicated at heart to the memory of my parents: W. Dr. John Garrigus, from the beginning of the graduate school process, continually introduced me to new ways of thinking about questions of race, empire, and the social fabric of the Atlantic world. None of this would have been vi possible without the foundation laid by Dr. Steven Reinhardt early in my career who taught me to always look to the text for the answers. Through her diligence and positive exploration of the craft of history, she has made me a better teacher and, in the process, improved my own work. Through feedback on conference presentations, classes, and private meetings, two professors now emeritus stand out for the perspectives they provided that are integral to this work. The genesis for this project came from a class on the history of West Africa with Dr. Alusine Jalloh. Dr. Jalloh, from that point on, made himself available for discussion about the complexity of transatlantic connections with Africa and the English-speaking western world for the last five hundred years. As the project took shape, the former chair of the History department here at the University of Texas at Arlington, Dr. W. Marvin Dulaney provided a deeper understanding and direction for this dissertation. Through his own work and feedback on specific aspects of this project, he led me to a way of thinking and an enormous body of scholarship on the rich and diverse history of African Americans. The research for this work was made possible by an indispensable army of archivists across the United States and Great Britain. First and foremost is the direct and indirect help of Brenda McClurkin, the head of Special Collections here at the university. On top of creating an open and helpful environment for research, she made pieces of research form her own collection available that helped to bring unknown figures from the past that deserve more attention than is given in this work. The archivists from the Herefordshire Archives and Records Centre allowed me considerable latitude in digging into another of the lesser-known historical figures and The Friends of Africa journal so crucial to understanding the continuing involvement of Great Britain in recolonization after British emancipation. I would also like to thank the staff of the library of vii the Society of Friends, based at Friends House in London, for their week of patience with the American, as I delved into the economic motivations behind many past Quakers. Other researchers have added undeniable parts to this work. Almost to a person, each of my fellow cohorts here at the University of Texas at Arlington provided sources they ran across or a different perspective on what I thought I knew. For this, I thank each of them. I must also thank other historians that helped through multiple discussions in multiple conferences and private discussions to formulate and add sources to this work, such as Roy P Wisecarver III, who became a friend because we always disagreed on small points. Other researchers outside of the university have also provided me with other material, some like independent British researcher Karen Hemmingham, did so without realizing how valuable the lead they gave was to my own research. Byman, Ph.D. ABSTRACT This model predicts progress in transnational illicit market suppression campaigns by comparing the relative efficiency and support of the suppression regime vis-à-vis the targeted illicit market. Focusing on competitive adaptive processes, this ‘Boxer’ model theorizes that these campaigns proceed cyclically, with the illicit market expressing itself through a clandestine business model, and the suppression regime attempting to identify and disrupt this model. Success in disruption causes the illicit network to ‘reboot’ and repeat the cycle. If the suppression network is quick enough to continually impose these ‘rebooting’ costs on the illicit network, and robust enough to endure long enough to reshape the path dependencies that underwrite the illicit market, it will prevail. Two scripts put this model into practice. The organizational script uses two variables, efficiency and support, to predict organizational evolution in response to competitive pressures.

Many letters have been received, principally from descendants of Daniel and Stephen Duncan, extracts of which appear in this history and are mute evidence of the interest the writers feel in their lineage and their desire to worthily live and teach their chil­ dren to hold to the standard set by their ancestors. That there are errors in this publication there can be no doubt, but not of my making for: "I cannot tell how the truth may be; I say the tale as 'twas said to me." (Sir Walter Scott.) The frequent appearance of my name and the very personal nature of this book is warranted, somewhat, by the fact that all along the thought has been it would be distributed, mainly, among the descendants of Daniel and Stephen Duncan, between whose families there is very close relationship because of the intermar­ riage of many cousins. Dad’s paternal grandparents, James Westropp Brereton and Ursula Harnett (along with four children) arrived in Canada from Listowel, Ireland in 1878, after the Captain had been appointed a Dominion Commissioner of Police by Queen Victoria. Dad’s maternal grandparents were Dan Martin of Northern Ireland and Julia Crowley, identified as of the Province of Munster, Ireland. My mother’s great grandparents, both the Willis and Doak families, also immigrated to Canada from Northern Ireland. So, it is little wonder that I went in search of my Irish ancestors. As my great-grandfather Captain James W. Brereton kept a diary and there were family tales and newspaper clippings of Brereton and Handford Halls, I became intrigued with my Irish Brereton ancestors at an early age. I began my journey with the Breretons of Cheshire and I continue to be fascinated with this family who travelled the world, were knighted and held positions of power. Also, as with many Landed Gentry families, their sons went into the clergy (some rising to senior positions), became involved in local politics and certainly there were many in the military throughout the centuries.

    Readex Report Former Slaves and Free Blacks in Canada West: Using Early American Newspapers to Trace the Circulation of a Slave Narrative By Eleanor Bird PhD Student, University of Sheffield, UK Between 1830 and the eve of the American Civil War, approximately 40,000 former slaves and free blacks fled the United States for Canada, especially to Canada West (that is, modern-day Ontario).[i] Slavery in Canada West had been in decline since the late eighteenth century, and slavery in the British colonies was officially abolished by an act of British Parliament which took effect in 1834. The number of fugitives travelling into Canada peaked after the passage of the Fugitive Slave Law in 1850 since this law made it far easier for runaways in the Northern United States to be returned to their former masters. It is estimated that 15,000 to 20,000 African Americans entered Canada from 1850 to 1860.[ii] Until recently critics have ignored the Canadian-dimension of slave narratives, despite the fact that there are more than ten nineteenth-century book-length slave narratives with portions set in Canada West.[iii] Some of these narratives were printed and circulated in the United States, and others in Britain and Canada West. These texts include, for example, Benjamin Drew’s The Refugee or The Narratives of Fugitive Slaves in Canada (1856), Samuel Ringgold Ward's Autobiography of a Fugitive Negro: His Anti-Slavery Labours in the United States, Canada and England (1855), Josiah Henson’s The Life of Josiah Henson, Formerly a Slave, Now an Inhabitant of Canada, as narrated by himself (1849) and Richard Warren’s Narrative of the Life and Sufferings of Rev Richard Warren (A Fugitive Slave) (1856).
