PRACTICAL FACTORS by JOC Bill Reed You probably don't have to go worrying Mr. Hidalgo about it, but they've finally done the impossible. They've finally unmasked The Lone Ranger. Isn't anything sacred anymore? Actually, a federal judge did the dastardly deed. It seems that some- body owns the rights to the Lone Ranger trademark and feels that Clayton Moore, at 64, is too old to represent the masked man. We should have gotten suspicious a long time ago. For years now, they've been gradually reducing the amount of silver in our domestic coins. And, too late, we see it all for what it really was -- a sinister plot to sack the Lone Ranger. Call it progress if you like, but I think it all started with the coming of the railroads. After that, it just didn't make sense to drive a herd of cattle across a movie lot. Still, you can't have a decent stampede in a boxcar. You can't have a decent shootout either, if everybody's worried about running out of bullets. In all this time, I can't recall the Lone Ranger ever hurting anyone. He always shot the gun out of the bad guy's hand. And, he always had enough silver bullets left to leave as a symbol of law and order in the West. "Who was that masked man?" is a question most of us never wanted answered. It would be like wanting to meet the real Tooth Fairy. Santa Claus.or even Ronald McDonald. And so, Moore spends his time these days signing autographs in shopping mall parking lots bedecked in.of all things.wraparound sunglasses. True to his character, he'll wait for law, order, and justice to make the final decision. No matter what the outcome, deep-down we know that only a handful of people know the true identity of the Lone Ranger. We can count ourselves among the privileged.
