Summary: A massive explosion aboard the bridge of the Enterprise forces a destructive separation of the saucer section from the rest of the ship. The ensuing devastation kills three trainee crewmembers and injures much of the senior officers, including Kirk and Spock. Spock risks paralysis as a result of his injuries (a chunk of metal has pierced his spine) to take command and figure out exactly what happened, but the official inquiry seems to consider the whole affair an accident. To Spock, the cause appears to be sabotage, and through a bit of detective work, he with the help of Chief Engineer Montgomery Scott, discover a star map potentially left behind by the saboteur. Spock presents his findings to both Captain Kirk and Commodore Clark at Starfleet. However, Commodore Clark ignores the testimony and instead has Spock return to Sickbay where he can be treated. Spock refuses McCoy and goes in search of Scotty. Spock persuades Scotty to join him on his investigation and together they “borrow” a Federation AA Class cruiser - the USS Raven -- and head off for the area indicated – a previously undiscovered planet called Tomarii.

As she pushes through the doors, the music booms. She greets some friends at a table and heads straight for the bar, her long hair swing­ ing behind her, her step in time with the music. At the bar, she places a large order of drinks with alien-sounding names. Her good time with her fellow Starfleet cadets is interrupted, however, when a young man, a local, whom the viewers recognize as an inebriated James T. Kirk, starts hitting on her, trying to buy her a drink: "Her shot's on me," he directs the bartender. "Her shot's on her," she answers. 'Thanks, but no thanks." As they banter, she remains unflustered, an equal in the verbal spar­ ring. "Uhura what?" "Just Uhura," she replies. Her brush-off answer is an inside joke for Star Trek fans: in the original 1960s television show, her char­ acter never had a first name.     The Distance Formula (Star Trek) Instructor's guide 1 Instructor's Guide 1.1 Students' Task In this improvisational skit, Kirk and Spock, (played by two students) are at different locations on a hostile planet and the Enterprise crew (the rest of the class) must devise a way to describe the distance between them in order to "beam" them to safety. Students use the distance formula j~r − r~0j to find the distance between Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock. The role of position vectors and the origin in the calculation of coordinate and origin independent distance is revealed. 1.2 Introduction We do this activity by having students act out a "Star Trek" skit. Other scenarios are, of course, possible. If you want to use the Star Trek scenario, reassure students who might not know about Star Trek series that all they need to know is that Kirk, Spock, and Scotty are officers on a starship. The starship has the ability to "beam" people around, i.e. move them from anywhere to anywhere via advanced technology called a transporter that requires lots of energy. This is the way the story goes: Ask for volunteers to play the roles of Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock. The instructor takes the role of Scotty. (Stand on the table to indicate the you are orbiting in a spaceship.) Everyone else is a "red shirt" who wants to be promoted to a shirt of another color. The "red shirts" are the one-time characters who can be killed off without long-term consequences to the television series.
