Touring Bike Buyer's Guide
TOURING BIKE BUYER’S GUIDE By Mike Deme I’ve held many job titles in my days at version, I went back and reread each of the previous guides. Not only did I find each writer’s approach very informative but enter - the Adventure Cycling Association, one taining as well. Despite the positive qualities of the articles, I felt they were a bit repetitive, but not for any fault of the writers. It’s of which was Information Specialist. In just that there hasn’t been any major advances in touring bike design recently so there is only so much to discuss. Influenced by that capacity, I was charged with these talented people, including Sheldon Brown, Fred Meredith, Tom Shaddox, and Fred Matheny, I thought I’d try a less techni - answering questions posed to the organ - cal approach. Carry on. So why don’t people interested in a bike designed for loaded ization as a whole, which were then, as touring have the same options as someone interested in a bike designed for road racing or mountain biking? The answer is sim - they are now, plenteous. At least half of ple: economics. Manufacturers and retailers want to sell a lot of bikes. The more they sell, the more money they make. And they these questions concern touring bikes. just don’t sell a lot of touring bikes. For those people who may have a chip on their shoulder about this, please, remove it now. It’s not helpful. The reality is The touring bicycle has been discussed, on and off, in the that fewer people like to tour by bicycle than like to participate in pages of Bike Report and Adventure Cyclist magazine, for as long as almost all other forms of cycling. -

The Framebuilders’ Collective TFC is a group of some of the most influential, powerful, and successful framebuilding individuals and companies in the in- dustry. Solitary Perfection One Rider’S Pursuit of Artisanal Purity
SOLITARY PERFECTION One rider’s PURSUIT OF ARTISANAL PURITY BY GARY J. BOULANGER PHOTOGRAPHY BY BRIAN VERNOR N AN UNSEASONABLY WARM AND SUN- ny Sunday afternoon last March, several of the world’s best bicycle-frame builders gathered in a crowded pizzeria in San Francisco’s SoMa district. Among the ranks were a veritable ‘who’s who’ of bicycle craftsmanship: Steve Potts, Bruce Gordon, Paul Sadoff (Rock Lobster), Brent Steelman, Jeremy Sycip and Steve Rex, lining the walls with some of the best two-wheeled eye candy under one roof. San Diego surf-jazz twins The Mattson 2 lit up the place with their unique sound as patrons milled around the piz- zeria with the esteemed builders, all enjoying wood-fired Neapolitan pizza made by New Jersey native Anthony Mangieri. This wiry, heavily tattooed proprietor of Una Piz- za Napoletana conceived this gathering—billed as ‘Ruota Libera 2011’—along with Soulcraft’s owner, Sean Walling. Mangieri, who speaks in whispering tones reminiscent of Alec Baldwin and has the hard-edged veneer of a skate- boarding, punk-rock bassist, opened this pizzeria at 11th and Howard, catty-corner to California Chopper and walk- ing distance from the DNA Lounge—a popular music venue that’s hosted the likes of Metallica, Prince and Green Day. Prick Mangieri’s finger on Monday and he’ll bleed chain lube. Prick his finger on Wednesday and he’ll bleed buffalo mozzarella cheese. For such a colorful character, his world is purely black and white. The 40-year-old moved his pizzeria from New York City’s East Village to San Francisco in September 2010.
