Original reports sent to the Colonial Office from Virginia were first microfilmed, and then transcribed for publication. Some of the penmanship of the early part of the 18th Century was like copper plate, but some was very hard to decipher, and where the same name was often spelled in two different ways on the same page, the task was all the more difficult. May the various lists of pioneer Virginians contained herein aid both genealogists, students of colonial history, and those who make a study of the evolution of names. In this event a part of my debt to other abstracters and compilers will have been paid. Thanks are due the Staff at the Public Record Office for many heavy volumes carried to my desk, and for friendly assistance. BACKGROUND: Targeted research in several areas of Virginia and North Carolina has yielded several Millses of particular interest with proved or alleged ties to Augusta: Cluster 1: Goochland > Albemarle > Amherst WILLIAM MILLS & WIFE MARY appear in Goochland County as early as 1729. As a resident of Goochland County, William requested land on Pedlar River, a branch of James River. In 1745, the tract he chose was cut away into the new county of Albemarle (later Amherst); it lay just across the Blue Ridge from the Forks of the James River land of a John Mills who is said to have lived contemporaneously in Augusta. William and Mary’s daughter Sarah married Thomas Watts of adjacent Lunenburg > Bedford about 1748. It is Blandfield, one of the most splendid mid-Georgian Tidewater Mansions dating from the Colonial Period, in Virginia. The mansion has been lovingly and meticulously restored by the Wheat family, in the spirit of its builder Robert Beverley. In 1983, Mr. and Mrs. James C. Wheat, Jr. purchased Blandfield, which had fallen into a state of disrepair, from Beverley family descendents. The purchase of Blandfield and the surrounding 3500 acres of pristine land, rescued Blandfield Plantation from commercial development at the hands of land speculators who wished to turn Blandfield and her lands into a Dutch owned resort. Blandfield is located on a breathtaking and vast acreage which borders the Rappahannock River, in Upper Essex County, north of Tappahannock. The original patent granted to Major Beverley, in 1683, included over 100,000 acres, which seems unfathomable to us today.

William Preston: Origins of a Backcountry Political Career BY RICHARD OSBORN Introduction William Preston (1729-1783), backcountry Virginian, exemplified the North British emigration to the southern backcountry during the second and third quarters of the eighteenth century. His Scotch Irish Presbyterian roots, his family’s humble antecedents, and his exploitation of opportunities provided by the quickening pace of Atlantic world trade exemplify underscore the Atlantic world character of backcountry settlement. Beginnings (1729-1738) Born Christmas Day, 1729, William Preston became the third child and eldest son of Elizabeth and John Preston. As residents of Newton Limavaddy, a small Irish town near Londonderry, the Prestons now had the son every Scotch-Irish family desired to carry on the family name.1 William grew up in a family dominated by females consisting of two older sisters, Letitia and Margaret, and two younger sisters, Ann and Mary.     THE ENGLISH EYE THE FRENCH IN NORTH AMERICA By Lois MULKEARN* T HE French-English dispute which culminated in the French and Indian Wars was as old as the English colonization of North America, and it increased in intensity in direct proportion to the western expansion of those colonies. As early as 1613 the Lord Ambassador of France complained to the English Privy Council "touchinge spoyles and other violences supposed to be committed by His Mates subjects of Great Brittaine upon the subjects of France on the coast of Greenland and Can- nada."1 Captain John Smith in his description of New England written after the voyage of 1614 remarked of the peltry trade: "of Beuers, Otters and Martins, blacke Foxes, and Furres of price, may yeerely be had six or seuen thousand-, and if the trade of the French were preuented, many more: 25,000. this yeere were brought from those northerne parts into France, of which trade we may haue as good part as the French if we take good courses. 2 In 1631 France challenged English right to Virginia by a recapit- ulation of the records of the discoveries of Ribaut and Laudon- niere in Carolina in 1564-66. The English right to Newfoundland they invalidated by citing the discovery of Verazzano in 1523 and Jacques Cartier's voyage up the St. Lawrence River as far as the "Great Sault Saint Louis" in 1535. The French had taken possession of the region around the Great Lakes and the Mississippi and Ohio River valleys.     Fry Family Summary: Joshua Fry By Aubin Clarkson Hutchison, 22 February 1999 Updated February 2015, by Pamela Hutchison Garrett We have thought of Joshua Fry as one of our most interesting ancestors, and he so remains. He was the subject of my initial minimal searching because his name was passed down in our family as the commander of Lieut. (later president) George Washington. The sad outcome of that responsibility was that Joshua died in 1754 while making a hurried journey, with delayed supplies, to meet up with his lieutenant. They were embarking on a military mission against incursions of Indians and the French, assigned to Joshua Fry by Gov. Dinwiddie and the Council of Virginia, when he suffered such a bad fall from his horse that he died. An inglorious, but not uncommon accident as we’ve learned from other records of the times. George Washington and the small army of men buried Joshua Fry on 31 May 1754. The site, lost to history, was at Wills Creek near Ft. Cumberland, the present site of Cumberland, MD. Many interesting facts have been uncovered about Joshua Fry. A fine, well-researched 180-page book by George W. Frye (1966) is the best source available. A photocopy is in my library. But his short, productive life deserves more attention and his English ancestors should be sought out and documented. Joshua Fry became quite famous before his death as the co-producer of the notable Frye- Jefferson map, the most accurate delineation of Virginia up to that time. He and his good friend and neighbor Peter Jefferson, father of our later president Thomas Jefferson, were the geographers appointed to the job, and completed it with such precision that it was even well known and utilized in Europe.
