Coordinate dissemination of project results with the NCRAC Technical Committee/Extension Subcommittee. A Checklist of I Texas Fresh-Water Fishes By CLARK HUBBS Department of Zoology The University of Texas DIVISION OF INLAND FISHERIES TEXAS GAME AND FISH COMMISSION Austin, Texas Marion Toole, Director IF Series - No. 3 Revised Dec. 1958 FOREWORD A checklist of Texas fresh-water fishes by CLARK HUBBS This checklist is modified from that of Hubbs (1957a). A number of changes have been made in nomenclature. Notropis roseus and N. deliciosus have been changed to N. texanus and N. strarnineus, re spectively, following Suttkus (1958). Etheostorna whipplei and E. m·tesiae have been changed to E. radiosum following a re-examina tion of available material. Two species have been added, Garnbusia senilis, following Hubbs (1958), and Eucinoslornus argenteus, a marine species collected in a .coastal stream near Brownsville. Two species which had not been described in the previous checklist are given their names, Gambusia geiseri, following Hubbs and Springer (1957), and G. helerochir, following Hubbs (1957b). The primary difference between the checklists is the addition of information on the distribution of fishes within the state to this list. The general concepts follow those given in a previous report (Hubbs, 1957c), but emphasize the ranges of the individual species rather than the distributional patterns. The range designations follow the common names of all species. The numbers refer to the modified game areas shovvn on the map. If the fish inhabits only a part of the area, it is so designated by preceding the number with letters (N. for north, etc.) indicating· the pai·t of the area inhabited by the species. -

-25- THE SACRAMENTO PERCH CArchoplites interruptus)- California's Only Native Centrarchid, by Will Sears, Danville, California After reading Ray Katula's excellent article on the demise of some of California's native fishes ("Eulogy for the San Joaquin River," Winter, 1993), I thought I might try to continue the focus on California's finned fauna by highlighting one of the native species mentioned in that article, the Sacramento Perch. Some of the information presented here was gleaned from an ichthyology class I took at Cal State Hayward under the guidance of one of my favorite professors, Dr. Sam McGinnes. The dearth of native California species inhabiting state waterways is a sad testament to the tremendous adaptive success of the many introduced non-native fish species in the state. After about nine weeks of seining a wide range of aquatic habitats in central California, our class's nets brought up very few native species. Ray Katula isn't the only one with bad luck when it comes to fishing for California natives. The Sacramento Perch is the only member of the family Centrarchidae that naturally occurs west of the Rocky Mountains. Evolving in isolation from the sunfish of the eastern United States, it kept the more primitive body form that closely resembles its fossilized forbears' body plans. In the California that existed before the Europeans arrived, these fish inhabited the sloughs, slow-water rivers, and small lakes of the Central Valley, as well as Clear Lake in Lake County and the Pajaro and Salinas Rivers. The Sacramento Perch evolved as one of the top piscivores (fish-eaters) in fish communities rich with prey, and in the past could be found in abundance throughout Central Valley Waterways. -

The Fish Communities of Big Vermilion River and Sugar Creek J. R. Gammon and J. R. Riggs Department of Zoology, DePauw University Greencastle, Indiana 46135 Introduction The waters of Big Vermilion River and Sugar Creek enter the Wabash River 20 kilometers apart in Vermillion and Parke County, Indiana respectively. In 1979 and 1980 sampling programs of their fish communities were undertaken as part of a long-term study of the middle Wabash River. We wished to (1) determine the nature of the fish communities in the lower portions of each tributary and (2) assess their potential relationship to the Wabash River and its fish community. The Study Streams Big Vermilion River and Sugar Creek both flow through wooded valleys on 2 2 their way to the Wabash River. Big Vermilion River drains 3712 km (1434 mi ) of largely agricultural land. Its three major tributaries coalesce near Danville, Illinois. Salt Fork and Middle Fork join at River Mile 29 and North Fork enters at RM 23 just upstream from a dam. The Middle Fork is regarded as one of II- linois's finest streams (18) and harbours several unusual species of fish. The up- per tributaries of Salt Fork have been the subject of many investigations (9, 10, 11, 15) and suffers domestic sewage from the cities of Rantoul and Champaign- Urbana as well as agricultural runoff. North Fork is somewhat polluted below Lake Vermilion (18). We investigated the lower 46 km (29 mi.) which, in addition to the waters mentioned, also received drainage from old coal mines and the industrial and domestic wastes from Danville, 111.
