  • LISA FISCHER BIO Lisa Fischer Is a Singer Who Really Gets Around. Her Life
LISA FISCHER BIO Lisa Fischer is a singer who really gets around. Her life is an endless round of planes, trains, and automoBiles, rehearsals and fittings. On tour with the Rolling Stones, Sting, Chris Botti or Nine Inch Nails, her name may not Be on the marquee, But she doesn't care. She's Busy loving every minute of it. It's easy to see why she works all the time: her astonishing range, her spot-on intonation, her mastery of the stage, the way her tone wraps itself around your heart and won't let go, the infectious quality of her time feel: these things keep her on top of the list. But it's the sweetness of her smile, her visiBle pleasure in watching her Bandmates do their stuff, her glamorous- girl-next-door quality that make fans all over the world think she's their own secret discovery (despite the fact that the YouTube version of her duet with Mick Jagger on 'Gimme Shelter' has millions of hits). The rest of her resume is pretty impressive too: touring, recording, and music making with Tina Turner, Chaka Khan, Beyonce, Dionne Warwick, Dolly Parton, Bobby McFerrin, Alicia Keyes, Lou Reed, Louie Vega, Aretha Franklin, John Scofield, George Benson, Laurie Anderson, Lee Ritenour, Jackie Evancho (and many others). Along with many other top session and backup singers like Darlene Love, Merry Clayton, Patti Austin, and Judith Hill, "the greatest artists you've never heard of" (but whose voices are instantly recognizable), she's featured in Morgan Neville's acclaimed documentary film Twenty Feet from Stardom, distributed By Miramax in the US and scheduled for European premieres throughout 2013-2014 season.

  • Lead a Normal Life
1: Lead A Normal Life “My family arrived in this country from Spain at the time of the Armada, and the story goes we were adopted by Cornish peasants . .” Peter Gabriel, 1974 “My dad is an electrical engineer, inventor type, reserved, shy, analytical, and my mum’s more instinctive, she responds by the moment – music is her big thing. And I’ve got both.” Peter Gabriel, 2000 HEN Peter Gabriel spoke of rather trusting a ‘country man than a Wtown man’ in Genesis’ 1974 song ‘The Chamber Of 32 Doors’, he could well have been talking about his own roots. For in his 63 years (at the time of writing), Gabriel has spent less than a decade living in a city. Although he keeps a residence in West London, Gabriel lives in rustic splendour at his home by his Real World studios in Box near Bath in Wiltshire, which echoes the rural idyll of his childhood in the Surrey countryside. The physical roots of his life could be a metaphor for his semi-detached relationship with showbusiness; near enough, yet far away. Surrey is less than an hour from London and his residence now is less than 15 minutes from the bustling city centre of Bath. He can get into the middle of things easily when he needs to, yet he remains far enough removed. It is not dissimilar to his relationship with the mainstream of popular music. Whenever Gabriel has neared the big time (or indeed, ‘Big Time’, his 1986 hit single) he has been there just enough to receive acclaim and at times, stellar sales, before retreating back to the anonymous comfort of the margins.

FARM AID: A CASE STUDY OF A CHARITY ROCK ORGANIZATION by Andrew M. Palen A Thesis Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts in Media Studies at The University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee December 2016 ABSTRACT FARM AID: A CASE STUDY ON THE IMPACT OF A CHARITY ROCK ORGANIZATION by Andrew M. Palen The University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee, 2016 Under the Supervision of Professor David Pritchard This study examines the impact that the non-profit organization Farm Aid has had on the farming industry, policy, and the concert realm known as charity rock. This study also examines how the organization has maintained its longevity. By conducting an evaluation on Farm Aid and its history, the organization’s messaging and means to communicate, a detailed analysis of the past media coverage on Farm Aid from 1985-2010, and a phone interview with Executive Director Carolyn Mugar, I have determined that Farm Aid’s impact is complex and not clear.

  • Protest As Event
PROTEST AS EVENT OVERVIEW ESSENTIAL QUESTION Since the 1960s, how have artists used musical events to promote change? OVERVIEW “Artists write, and sing, and think, and this is how we get to put our two cents in, and we do it right in front of people, not in secret meetings behind closed doors. We let people know what we think … I don’t know if people go to musicians for their politics. I doubt that they do, you know, but you can rally people to think on serious issues together, and that’s what we’re trying to do.” - Bruce Springsteen, August 4, 2004, Nightline, ABC Network In August 1971, former member of the Beatles George Harrison gathered a group of musical colleagues that included Bob Dylan, Ringo Starr, Eric Clapton, and many others to perform two benefit concerts at New York’s Madison Square Garden. The so-called Concert for Bangladesh was intended to raise money for and awareness of the refugees fleeing a bloody civil war in Pakistan, a situation made even worse by a devastating cyclone earlier that year. The concert, which was also recorded as a film and a live album, became a model for how Rock and Roll stars could marshal their celebrity in support of a particular cause. The efforts of Harrison and his friends ultimately raised millions of dollars for UNICEF and established a new precedent for how Rock and Roll could engage the public in order to promote meaningful change in the world. The mass gatherings of the 1960s – including the March on Washington, antiwar demonstrations on college campuses, and the Woodstock festival – had clearly demonstrated the power of events to command media attention and to make voices heard.

James Taylor & Jackson Browne - Aug 27, 2021 James Taylor will set sail on his Great American Standard Songbook Tour where he will be joined by fellow singer-songwriter Jackson Browne with a stop at Jones Beach Aug 27, 2021 - tix: http://JAMESTAYLOR.jonesbeach.com The coast-to-coast spring-into-summer run will give Taylor the chance to possibly debut new material from his forthcoming studio album & 19th studio recording, American Standard, which was also announced on Thursday and set to arrive on February 28th via Fantasy Records. Additionally, for Taylor’s 19th studio album, American Standard, the veteran guitarist and singer chose to take on a smattering of classic Americana tunes, including “My Blue Heaven”, “You’ve Got To Be Carefully Taught”, “Sit Down, You’re Rocking The Boat”, “Pennies From Heaven”, and more. Taylor shared his cover of Gene De Paul and Sammy Cahn‘s “Teach Me Tonight” with the album’s announcement. James Taylor will take on the Great American Songbook on the singer’s upcoming album American Standard, due out February 28th. The LP is Taylor’s first since 2015’s Before This World and 19th overall. “I’ve always had songs I grew up with that I remember really well, that 1 / 2 James Taylor & Jackson Browne - Aug 27, 2021 were part of the family record collection — and I had a sense of how to approach, so it was a natural to put American Standard together,” Taylor said in a statement. “I know most of these songs from the original cast recordings of the famous Rodgers and Hammerstein musicals, including My Fair Lady, Oklahoma, Carousel, Showboat and others.” Taylor also unveiled the first single from American Standard, a take on the Gene De Paul-Sammy Chan jazz classic “Teach Me Tonight,” previously popularized by Dinah Washington and Frank Sinatra.
