Himalayan Linguistics Segmental and suprasegmental features of Brokpa Pema Wangdi James Cook University ABSTRACT This paper analyzes segmental and suprasegmental features of Brokpa, a Trans-Himalayan (Tibeto- Burman) language belonging to the Central Bodish (Tibetic) subgroup. Segmental phonology includes segments of speech including consonants and vowels and how they make up syllables. Suprasegmental features include register tone system and stress. We examine how syllable weight or moraicity plays a determining role in the placement of stress, a major criterion for phonological word in Brokpa; we also look at some other evidence for phonological words in this language. We argue that synchronic segmental and suprasegmental features of Brokpa provide evidence in favour of a number of innovative processes in this archaic Bodish language. We conclude that Brokpa, a language historically rich in consonant clusters with a simple vowel system and a relatively simple prosodic system, is losing its consonant clusters and developing additional complexities including lexical tones. According to Tournadre & Dorje (2003: 110), the evidentiality systeM of Lhasa Tibetan (LT) distinguishes no less than four “evidential Moods”: (i) egophoric, (ii) testiMonial, (iii) inferential, and (iv) assertive. If one also takes into account the hearsay Marker, which is cOMMonly considered as an evidential category in typological survey studies (e.g. Aikhenvald 2004; Hengeveld & Dall’Aglio Hattnher 2015; inter alia), LT displays a five-fold evidential distinction. The LT systeM, however, is clearly not the Most cOMplex of its kind within the Tibetan linguistic area. -

Kabul Journal by Guy Fipps Chapter 15 – Journey to Alexandria I must admit that I really didn’t know much about Afghanistan before coming here. I had seen the Rambo movie, the one where he goes to help the Afghans fight the Soviets and blows up Russian helicopters, but it really didn’t provide much insight. But, one thing I did know about Afghanistan was that Alexander the Great build a city here, one of several he founded in Central Asia, and the most eastern of all the Alexandrias. The Greeks that settled here intermarried and became integrated into the local population. These cities of Central Asia including the one in Afghanistan became the multicultural Bactria Kingdom that blended Greek and eastern thought, philosophy, architecture and art. A couple of years ago I saw a Eurasian Empires documentary on Afghanistan’s Alexandria. Better known as Ai Khanoum, the city was once located on the banks of the river that now separates Afghanistan and Tajikistan. In the documentary, the film crew crossed the river in a small wooden row boat because they could not travel to the area from within Afghanistan. My first few months here I asked both Afghans and expatriates about Alexandria (or Ai Khanoum), and no one I talked to had heard of it. Alexander built several forts and outposts in Afghanistan – “was I confused” they’d ask. It was hopeless that I’d ever see Ai Khanoum, I concluded, since I did not even know where the city was located combined with the difficulties of my restrictions and traveling in Afghanistan. -

Chapter 10 Agricultural Development, Growth and Poverty in India’s Mountain Region RAMESH CHAND Principal Scientist National Centre for Agricultural Economics and Policy Research ICAR, New Delhi, India 10.1 Introduction India can be classified into five primary or major natural regions on the basis of topographical factors These are: i) the Himalayas and Associated Hills; ii) the Northern Plains; iii) the Peninsular Plateaus and Hills; iv) the East Coast Plains, and v) the West Coast Plains (Alagh 1990). Out of these five regions, the hill areas of the country constitute 21% of the total geographical area and 9% of the total population of the country. The hill areas offer a basic life support system and natural resources. Besides those living in this region, a large part of the population in the plains is dependent on hill resources, especially those of the Himalayan region, and on their management. Most of the perennial rivers of the country originate and have their watersheds in the Himalayas. These rivers are a lifeline of agriculture in the plains, and any adverse change in the Himalayan ecology directly affects flows in these rivers For instance, deforestation in the Himalayas results in reduction in water discharge from the watersheds and increase in soil erosion, leading to siltation of rivers which raises river beds, causes frequent floods in the plains, and reduces the lifespans of multipurpose reservoirs The indirect effects are innumerable. The hill and mountainous areas of the Himalayan region are ecologically fragile and generally underdeveloped. Development of these regions cannot be ignored because underdevelopment and poverty are serious causes of ecological degradation in the hills. -
