It enjoys almost all types of vegetations. Among its floral wealth, the diversity of orchids plays an important role. They are known for their beautiful flowers having ecological values. An extensive survey in the field done from 2009 to 2020 in different areas of the state, supported by information found in the literature and by the material kept in the collections of local herbariums, allows us to propose, in this article, a list of 160 species belonging to 50 different genera. Furthermore, endemism, conservation aspects, medicinal and economic values of some of them are discussed. Résumé L'État d'Odisha abrite une grande richesse florale et faunistique avec des paysages variés. Il bénéficie de presque tous les types de végétations. Parmi ses richesses florales, la diversité des orchidées joue un rôle important. Ces dernières sont connues pour leurs belles fleurs ayant une valeurs écologiques. Mathew Thiruvananthapuram 695 562, Kerala, India ABSTRACT Andaman-Nicobar Archipelago, the insular habitat in the Bay of Bengal is highly affluent with plant diversity. According to latest statistics, the tropical rainforests of these islands are known to host over 2463 Angiosperm taxa within a limited geographical region of 8,249 sq km, indicates its fragile ecological equilibrium. Orchidaceae is one of the well represented Angiosperm families of the Andaman- Nicobar Archipelago. Dendrobium Swartz is one of the predominant insular orchid genera with wide range of occurrence from tidal swamps at sea level to hilltop vegetations at higher altitudes represented with 19 species including the present addition. Dendrobium herbaceum Lindl. is a new addition to the flora of Andaman Islands is described here with illustrations. Thirty-one morphological characters were considered; six vegetative and twenty-five floral, of which five were qualitative and twenty-six were quantitative characters. The data were subjected to Cluster Analysis (CA) and Principal Component Analysis (PCA). Cluster analysis has produced two prominent clusters, D. aphyllum, D. nutans and D. panduratum as cluster 1 and D. crumenatum and D. heterocarpum as cluster 2. Both D. nutans and D. panduratum are producing small sized floral parts, compared to D. aphyllum hence exhibits close similarities in floral morphology which resulted in forming a cluster of most closely related species with least dissimilarity values. With respect to many characteristics, two species incluster 2, D. crumenatum and D. heterocarpum, are found to be similar except for the leaf thickness. Furthermore, PCA also in agreement with the relationships derived from the cluster analysis. -

Orchids of Western Ghats Dr. S.K. Jogdand P.G. Dept. of Botany Mrs. K.S.K. College Beed Orchids, one of the beautiful creations of the nature, comprise an unique group of plants. Being one of the largest families of the flowering plants, Orchidaceae constitutes about 7% species of all Angiosperms and nearly 40% of monocotyledons. It is one of the largest and most diversified families of Angiosperms represented by 25,000 to 35,000 species belonging to 600 – 800 genera (Arditti, 1979) distributed in all parts of the world except, perhaps, in the Antarctica (Abraham and Vatsala, 1981). India represents about 1,141 species belonging to 140 genera of orchids with Himalayas as their main home (Kumar and Manilal, 1994). Orchids are perennial herbs and exhibit incredible range of diversity in habit; shape, size, colour and fragrance of flower and its fascination. Orchids are highly evolved among the monocotyledons and also possess evolved flower and seed. The Western Ghats of India, one of the salubrious spots providing vast range of habitats for a good number of orchid species is one of the Hot- Spots of endemic plants of India. It is the second richest and diverse spot as far as orchids are concerned. It harbors 267 species, 3 subspecies, and 2 varieties of orchids belonging to 72 genera of which more than 46% are endemic. Orchidaceae are one of the dominant families in the Western Ghats only next to the Poaceae and Leguminoceae. Among the Monocotyledons, family Orchidaceae is found to be interesting for its Taxonomy, Cytogenetics, Adaptations, and Propagation. -

Of particular interest is the Stereosandra as it is the first record of this genus in the country. Keywords. Our ongoing studies resulted in nine additions to the orchid flora of Myanmar, namely Bulbophyllum capnophyton J.J.Verm. et al. (syn. Trias nana Seidenf.), Dendrobium macrostachyum Lindl., D. praecinctum Rchb.f., Habenaria reniformis (D.Don) Hook.f., Liparis distans C.B.Clarke, L. resupinata Ridl., Micropera thailandica (Seidenf. & Smitinand) Garay, Oberonia obcordata Lindl. and Stereosandra javanica Blume, all of which are new records for Myanmar of species found in adjacent countries. Stereosandra is recorded from Myanmar for the first time. -

ABSTRACT After 7 years of intensive explorations during 2013-2020 in South Andaman Islands, we recorded a total of 1376 wild and naturalized vascular plant taxa representing 1364 species belonging to 701 genera and 153 families, of which 95% of the taxa are based on primary collections. Las orquidáceas son una familia de plantas con interés económico y científico dada su diversidad ornamental y aplicaciones en la medicina entre otras. Sin embargo, muchas especies de orquídeas están amenazadas y en peligro de extensión, debido a la transformación del hábitat y la extracción excesiva de especies con interés comercial. Aunado a esto, su propagación y conservación in vitro, resulta costosa, debido a la complejidad biológica. El presente estudio reporta información sobre un medio de cultivo versátil, enfocado en la conservación de germoplasma y producción in-vitro de orquídeas. Para ello se diseñó una formulación basada en la modificación del medio Murashige y Skoog (1962) con vitaminas Morel, agua de coco y carbón activado recurriendo a la combinación de experiencias exitosas de la bibliografía reportada. Se recolectaron en el eje cafetero, cápsulas de Prosthechea fragrans (Sw.) W.E.Higgins y esterilizadas en el laboratorio. Los medios de cultivo fueron probados para la inducción de callo, proliferación de estructuras tipo protocormos, desarrollo y mantenimiento de plántulas. Se logró la germinación asimbiótica in- Resumen vitro de las de semillas colectadas, se obtuvieron tres tipos de callos. Luego de 7 meses de cultivo, las plántulas alcanzaron entre 1,1. -

INTRODUCTION Orchids, more than any other plants, exert a mysterious fascination for most people, and all the wild orchids of tropical regions are highly puzzling and peculiar. These graceful plants belong to family Orchidaceae being one of the largest families of flowering plants. This family is represented by more than 17,000 known wild species in 750 genera in the world and the present figure of the hybrids among these touches around 80,000 (Rao T A.,1998). The Orchidaceae contains more species than almost any other flowering plant family, being rivaled only by Compositae or Asteraceae. The family is cosmopolitan but with many more species in the tropics than in the temperate regions. It has a varied range of life forms, including both green terrestrial species such as are familiar in temperate regions, and in addition a large number of epiphytes of great range of size, common in the tropics. Some orchids like Vanilla are lianas and many species of all life forms, including the large lianas, are achlorophyllus and are often regarded as saprophytic. The smallest orchids, Cryptoanthemis slateri and Rhizanthella gardneri , are completely subterranean including their flower buds and have a fresh weight of few grams at most; the largest orchid is said to weigh over a ton (J L Harley, 1983). Apart from the popular and some time bizarre flowers with complex pollination mechanisms, the orchids are remarkable for two characters: firstly their seeds are small, the largest is about 14 m g, and within them the embryo is little differentiated: secondly they are all mycorrhizal, living throughout life in association with fungi. -

Orchid Research Newsletter No. 69 January 2017 In the German language there is a word Orchideenfach ('orchid subject'; plural Orchideenfächer), which denotes an obscure field of study considered to be of little practical value and which attracts only insignificant numbers of students. According to the German Wikipedia (https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orchideenfach), such Orchideenfächer include Onomastics, Celtology, Christian Archaeology, Tibetology, African Studies, and Crystallography. Ironically, Orchidology is not listed as an Orchideenfach. Perhaps that is because it is not considered an 'orchid subject', or maybe—and more likely, I think—because Orchidology is not a single field of study with its own Orchidology Departments at universities. In any case, it would be wrong to see the term as a purely derogatory one. No-one today would look down upon Quantum Physics, and yet it has been called an Orchideenfach in the past. So, there is hope for students and professors of 'orchid subjects'. As orchidologists we should be relieved to learn that the term Orchideenfach does not derive from the occupation of people who study orchids professionally. If we are to believe Wikipedia, the term instead comes from a perceived analogy. On the one hand we have a group of plants, orchids, once considered to be luxury items that are fastidious in cultivation and lack practical value. On the other hand we have, well, an Orchideenfach: a subject that is something of an intellectual luxury, one that requires a special kind of dedication (and may lead students to unemployment, as the same Wikipedia article suggests). I firmly believe, however, that even if Orchidology were an academic field in its own right, complete with professors and curricula, it would not be an Orchideenfach.
