The Mutual Influence of Science Fiction and Innovation
Nesta Working Paper No. 13/07 Better Made Up: The Mutual Influence of Science fiction and Innovation Caroline Bassett Ed Steinmueller George Voss Better Made Up: The Mutual Influence of Science fiction and Innovation Caroline Bassett Ed Steinmueller George Voss Reader in Digital Media, Professor of Information and Research Fellow, Faculty of Arts, Research Centre for Material Technology, SPRU, University University of Brighton, Visiting Digital Culture, School of of Communication Sussex Fellow at SPRU, University of Media, Film and Music, Sussex University of Sussex Nesta Working Paper 13/07 March 2013 www.nesta.org.uk/wp13-07 Abstract This report examines the relationship between SF and innovation, defined as one of mutual engagement and even co-constitution. It develops a framework for tracing the relationships between real world science and technology and innovation and science fiction/speculative fiction involving processes of transformation, central to which are questions of influence, persuasion, and desire. This is contrasted with the more commonplace assumption of direct linear transmission, SF providing the inventive seed for innovation– instances of which are the exception rather than the rule. The model of influence is developed through an investigation of the nature and evolution of genre, the various effects/appeals of different forms of expression, and the ways in which SF may be appropriated by its various audiences. This is undertaken (i) via an inter- disciplinary survey of work on SF, and a consideration the historical construction of genre and its on-going importance, (ii) through the development of a prototype database exploring transformational paths, and via more elaborated loops extracted from the database, and (iii) via experiments with the development of a web crawl tool, to understand at a different scale, using tools of digital humanities, how fictional ideas travel. -

Ringworld Engineers Larry Niven PART ONE CHAPTER 1 UNDER the WIRE
Ringworld 02 Ringworld Engineers Larry Niven PART ONE CHAPTER 1 UNDER THE WIRE Louis Wu was under the wire when two men came to invade his privacy. He was in full lotus position on the lush yellow indoor-grass carpet. His smile was blissful, dreamy. The apartment was small, just one big room. He could see both doors. But, lost in the joy that only a wirehead knows, he never saw them arrive. Suddenly they were there: two pale youths, both over seven feet tall, studying Louis with contemptuous smiles. One snorted and dropped something weapon-shaped in his pocket. They were stepping forward as Louis stood up. It wasn't just the happy smile that fooled them. It was the fist-sized droud that protruded like a black plastic canker from the crown of Louis Wu's head. They were dealing with a current addict, and they knew what to expect. For years the man must have had no thought but for the wire trickling current into the pleasure center of his brain. He would be near starvation from self-neglect. He was small, a foot and a half shorter than either of the invaders. He — As they reached for him Louis bent far sideways, for balance, and kicked once, twice, thrice. One of the invaders was down, curled around himself and not breathing, before the other found the wit to back away. Louis came after him. What held the youth half paralyzed was the abstracted bliss with which Louis came to kill him. Too late, he reached for the stunner he'd pocketed. -

Trisha Ditsworth, Louie Strentzel Muir Trisha Hart Ditsworth Is Honored to Be Here Singing This Incredible Music
From the Artistic Director: It is with great delight that I have accepted the position of Artistic Director and Principal Conductor for ProMusica Arizona! I look forward to taking ProMusica to the next level and programming future concerts that will entertain, inspire and even stretch you, musically. Our presentation of Mountain Days will do just that. John Muir’s passion for making sure the beauty of America was preserved for generations to come has been gloriously captured in story and song by my long-time friend and mentor, composer Craig Bohmler, and lyricist Mary Bracken-Phillips. To be able to bring a work of this magnitude to you is the experience of a lifetime. A production of epic proportion! Much of the text in the script and songs are Muir’s own words from his journals and books – beautifully brought to life by our award-winning cast. Through words and music, you will get to know the passionate John Muir and his unquenchable thirst for exploring this great country of ours, his love for his wife Louie, his friendship with Theodore Roosevelt, the struggle and heartbreak of losing Hetch Hetchy Valley – and his beloved wife. Sweeping melodies and intensely glorious orchestrations will transport you to the grandeur of Yosemite. We'd also like to invite you to join us for our free “Bon Voyage” concert on June 2nd as we prepare to go to Ireland on concert tour with a small ensemble from the Chorale. The program is all American music, including Musical Theater, Folk Songs and Spirituals. Planning for our 2019-2020 season is underway and our programs will be announced very soon. -

Album by a Male Artist from a Rock Or Pop Group to Debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 Since the Chart Was Launched 50 Years Earlier
Rob Thomas has been one of modern music’s most compelling and commercially successful artists for well over a decade – between Matchbox Twenty, his solo work, and his various collaborations with iconic artists like Santana, Mick Jagger and Willie Nelson, his tally now stands at more than 80 million albums sold worldwide. Arguably the most accomplished singer/songwriter of his generation, it all comes back to the creative source for Rob. As he says with typical understatement, “I’m a guy who hears songs in his head, and I have to write them down, and I have to get them out. I’m just lucky enough that I can make it my life’s work.” ROB THOMAS, IN FACT… “The whole thing started over 17 years ago because I had a bunch of songs,” says Rob of the genesis of Matchbox Twenty. Since then, he has penned a remarkable string of smashes, including their #1-charters “Push,” “3AM,” “If You’re Gone,” “Bent,” “Disease,” and “Unwell,” and other major hits like “Real World,” “Back 2 Good,” “Mad Season,” and “Bright Lights.” In 1999, his smash collaboration with Santana, the Thomas-penned “Smooth,” earned Rob three Grammy Awards and today ranks #1 on Billboard’s “Top Hot 100 Rock Songs” chart and #2 on the magazine’s “Hot 100 All-Time Top Songs.” In 2004, the Songwriters Hall of Fame presented Thomas with its premiere “Starlight Award” – created to recognize a composer in the early years of his or her career that has already made a lasting impact. He has won numerous BMI and ASCAP Awards, and has earned the Songwriter of the Year crown from both Billboard and BMI for two consecutive years. -

Eller: The Body Eclectic: Sources of Ray Bradbury’s Martian Chronicles THE BODY ECLECTIC: SOURCES OF RAY BRADBURY’S MARTIAN CHRONICLES Jonathan Eller Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis There is an intriguing five-year gap between the time that Ray Bradbury first envisioned a book about people on Mars, and the time that he rediscovered that intent and produced his remarkable first novel, The Martian Chronicles. Bradbury’s new introduction to the Fortieth Anniversary Edition recalls the crucial moment of rediscovery, a New York luncheon in June 1949 with Don Congdon, Bradbury’s literary agent, and Doubleday editor Walter I. Bradbury (no relation). At the urging of California writer Norman Corwin, the twenty-nine-year-old author had traveled to New York from Los Angeles with fifty new stories and enough money to stay at the YMCA for a week.
