Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals 2nd Meeting of the Sessional Committee of the CMS Scientific Council (ScC-SC2) Bonn, Germany, 10 – 14 July 2017 UNEP/CMS/ScC-SC2/Inf.3 DISAGGREGATION OF BIRD FAMILIES LISTED ON CMS APPENDIX II (Prepared by the Appointed Councillors for Birds) Summary: The first meeting of the Sessional Committee of the Scientific Council identified the adoption of a new standard reference for avian taxonomy as an opportunity to disaggregate the higher-level taxa listed on Appendix II and to identify those that are considered to be migratory species and that have an unfavourable conservation status. The current paper presents an initial analysis of the higher-level disaggregation using the Handbook of the Birds of the World/BirdLife International Illustrated Checklist of the Birds of the World Volumes 1 and 2 taxonomy, and identifies the challenges in completing the analysis to identify all of the migratory species and the corresponding Range States. The document has been prepared by the COP Appointed Scientific Councilors for Birds. We extracted and purified DNA from fresh muscle tissue, liver tissue, or toepad clips from 113 vouchered museum specimens (Supplementary File S1) using the Qiagen DNeasy Blood and Tissue Kit following the manufacturer’s protocol. We quantified DNA extracts using a Qubit fluorometer, and we prepared aliquots of DNA extracted from muscle and liver at 10 ng/µL in 60 µL volume for shearing. We sheared each DNA sample to 400–600 bp using a Qsonica Q800R sonicator for 15–45 cycles, with each cycle running for 20 seconds on and 20 seconds off at 25% amplitude. -

There's nothing like a bright red parrot to brighten up a bush! This Papuan Lorikeet (which the field guide splits as Stella's Lorikeet) made multiple visits to a Schefflera plant just off the Kumul Lodge balcony. Photo by participant Greg Griffith. This year's was one of the most unusual Niugini trips I've had, in a way that I don't expect to be repeated anytime soon: for the first time ever, we didn't once have to bird in the rain! In fact, we had pretty clear and sunny conditions through most of the tour, with even perpetually foggy, misty Tabubil providing blue skies and sunshine for most of our stay there. As a result, we had some of the best viewing conditions I've ever experienced on this tour, even if some bird activity was suppressed by the gorgeous weather. Add in the fact that the local airlines performed well, and this was a pretty darned good run of this often challenging trip. Despite the good weather, the total number of species we saw was remarkably similar to the total we find in years with more typical weather. But even if it didn't increase the bird list, it sure did make for more pleasant birding conditions, and resulted in some fine views of several birds that have been troublesome in the past. -

WOLF VICTOR EMANUEL NATURE TOURS, INC. 2525 WALLINGWOOD DRIVE, SUITE 1003 AUSTIN, TEXAS 78746 WWW.VENTBIRD.COM No group of birds says “New Guinea” more than the fabulous Birds-of-Paradise, noted for their brilliant plumage and elaborate ornamentation, and they were the focus of this Extension. Very few are found in the lowlands, so to see a variety of them we headed for the Central Highlands. We couldn’t have been more successful in our quest! After a difficult check-in at the Rabaul Airport, with no electricity and everything done by hand, we finally took off for Port Moresby, only to arrive and find that our flight to Mt. Hagen had been canceled. We became “the disrupted,” but got a very good meal out of it that evening! Early the next morning we flew to Mt. Hagen in beautiful weather, coming in right over the incredibly rugged and heavily forested spine of the mountains. By lunchtime we had arrived at rustic Kumul Lodge in the upper montane forest, where an amazing sight greeted us as we stepped onto the back balcony overlooking their bird- feeding tables. There were birds simply everywhere, the gorgeous Ribbon-tailed Astrapias the standout. Never did we imagine that Crested Berrypecker © David Wolf we would see our first spectacular birds-of- paradise right in front of us at close range! Male, female, juvenile—all were there as we pulled out cameras and fired away. -

(Photo: Brenden Metcalf) Prepared for: Sustainability Pty Ltd Unit 3/118, Flora Terrace, North Beach, WA, 6020 Prepared by: Cameron Everard, Mike Bamford and Brenden Metcalf BAMFORD CONSULTING ECOLOGISTS 23 Plover Way, Kingsley, WA, 6026 26th September 2011 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Diatreme Resources Limited proposes to develop the Cyclone Mineral Sands deposit in Western Australia within the northern area of the Eucla Basin and flanking the South Australian border. As part of environmental impact assessment, Bamford Consulting Ecologists was engaged to conduct a preliminary desktop fauna assessment to identify the fauna values of the Cyclone deposit project area. The key objectives of the fauna assessment were to: conduct a desktop review to identify the vertebrate fauna assemblage that may occur within or adjacent to the project area; investigate the likelihood of conservation significant species being present; identify and describe general vegetation and soil associations ("habitats") present; identify potential impacts of the project upon fauna values, and propose management measures to mitigate these impacts. The desktop assessment identified 195 fauna species that may occur in the project area, including 2 frog, 64 reptile, 100 bird and 29 mammal species. A total of 20 conservation significant fauna species was identified and include four mammals, two reptiles and 14 bird species. From the conservation significant taxa identified the species of most concern include the: Giant Desert Skink, Woma, Sandhill Dunnart, Southern Marsupial Mole, Crest-tailed Mulgara and Nullarbor Quail-thrush. -

Reproduced with the permission of Bird life Australia. 51 Order PASSERIFORMES The largest and most diverse order of birds, commonly called passerines or perching birds, and comprising some 5 712 species in 45 families (based on Sibley &Monroe 1990; Sibley &Ahlquist 1990), and well over half the world's known bird species. In the HANZAB region, Passeriformes represented by some 382 species in 39 families. Tiny to large: smallest passerine is Pygmy Tit Psaltria exilis of Java, with a total length c. 8 em; largest is Greenland Raven Corvus corax principalis, with a total length c. 64 em and weighing up to 1. 7 kg. Superb Lyre bird Menura novaehollandiae of e. Aust. probably second largest in Order, with a total length (in adult male) of c. 103 em, including tail of c. 70 em, and weight up to c. 1.1 kg. Cosmopolitan except Antarctica and some oceanic islands; and occupying all terrestrial habitats. Overall, Passeriformes are characterized by (based on Raikow 1982; Sibley & Ahlquist 1990; and DAB [=Schodde & Mason 1999]): Palate aegithongnathous (except Conopophagidae [gnateaters]). Intestinal caeca rudimentary. Single left carotid artery (except paired in Pseudocalyptomena and possibly other broad bills [Eurylaimidae]). Aftershaft reduced or absent. Neck short, with 14 cervical vertebrae in most, but 15 in Eurylaimidae (broadbills); atlas perforated; metasternum usually two-notched (rarely four-notched). -

Blue Bird-of-paradise Tour Summary Our tour of Papua New Guinea began as we boarded our aircraft to the South Pacific islands of the Bismarck Archipelago for the pre-tour extension. First-off, we visited the rainforest of the Pokili Wildlife Management Area which holds the largest breeding colony of Melanesian Scrubfowl in the world. It was an amazing experience to wander through the massive colony of these bizarre birds. We also managed outstanding views of the gorgeous Black-headed Paradise-Kingfisher, Blue-eyed Cockatoo and Red- knobbed Imperial-Pigeon. Some participants were fortunate to spot the rare Black Honey Buzzard. Then we took time to explore several small, remote tropical islands in the Bismarck Sea and were rewarded with sightings of Black-naped Tern, the boldly attractive Beach Kingfisher, Mackinlay’s Cuckoo-Dove and the extraordinary shaggy Nicobar Pigeon. Back on the main island, we visited the Pacific Adventist University, where we found a roosting Papuan Frogmouth, White-headed Shelduck and Comb-crested Jacana.
