Every Thursday: 7:00pm Special Olympic Power Lifting practice at the 53rd street YMCA in Davenport. You must be 16 years old to participate in this sport through Special Olympics. Each game you bowl costs $2.00 and this includes shoes rental. January 3: 6-9pm “Silver Skates Speed Skating Event/Competition at the Rivers Edge, 700W. River Drive in Davenport. The cost is $8.00. January 4: 3:00pm St. Ambrose Men’s Basketball team plays Indiana-South Bend at Lee Lohman Arena in Davenport. For more information call 563-333-6227. January 4, 5, 25, 26: The Mississippi River Center on Arsenal Island, between Davenport and Rock Island, offers free eagle watches and Clock Tower tours from 9:00am-10:30am and 12:30pm-2:00pm. Reservations are required. Call 309-794-5338. The event is at building 382. January 5: 9:00am “Walk With The Eagles” Meet at Credit Island Lodge in Davenport, on West River Drive. The cost is $1.92 for Davenport residents or $2.40 for non-residents. For more information call Sherrie Fisher at 563-529-2143. January 8: 5:00pm-8:00pm A dance is sponsored by New Found Hope every 2nd Wednesday of the month at the Moose Lodge on Rockingham Road in Davenport. The cost of the dance is $5.00 per person. If staff take a healthy snack to share they are admitted into the dance for free. January 9, 2014 – March 13, 2014: 5:00pm-6:00pm Water exercise class at the Clarion Hotel, 5202 Brady Street, Davenport, Iowa. Take the plunge at the end of the day and exercise at the Clarion Hotel. Participants will be led through a variety of stretching and endurance activities to help increase mobility and range of motion while still having fun exercising in the water. These activities are perfect for everyone. You can purchase a punch card for 15 classes at $25.00 at the Davenport Parks and Recreation office, 700W. January 10, 11, 12: Bald Eagle Days at the QCCA Expo Center located at 2621-4th Ave., Rock island, Illinois. Hours: Friday 4-8pm, Saturday 10am-8pm, and Sunday 10am-5pm. Admission is $5.00 for adults and $1.00 for kids. The annual event includes live eagle programs and live bird of prey demonstrations. Pella Wildlife Company will have programs showing their wolves and Niabi Zoo will be there with exotic animals, including the penguins. January 13-15: State Special Olympic Winter Games in Dubuque, Iowa. Call Marie Randol at 563-340-5712 for more information on times of events. The athletes that are involved with Snow Shoeing at the Winter Games need snow boots, a hat, a winter coat, gloves, and a scarf with them. Please assure that they wear them when they leave for the games and do not pack them in their suitcases. January 16: 7:00pm Bettendorf High School Wind Ensemble Chamber Orchestra Concert. Any questions call 563-332-7001. January 17, 18, 19: Quad City Boat and Vacation Show at the River Center-136 East 3rd Street, Davenport, Iowa. Admission is $6.00. There are lots of exhibits. Some of them include resorts and fishing camps, vacations, campgrounds, tourism, fishing tackle plus lots more. For more information call 326-8500. January 18: 8:30am Special Olympic District Team Basketball and Basketball Skills competition at North Scott High School in Eldridge, Iowa. January 18: 6:00pm-7:30pm The Annual community-wide celebration and musical tribute to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. returns to Centennial hall at Augustana College. This free public event will celebrate the legacy of this great leader through powerful speakers, music, and dance. The event is free and the address is 3703-7th Ave., Rock island, Illinois. January 24: 6:00pm-9:00pm Friday Night Jam at the Roosevelt Community Center, 1220 Minnie Avenue, Davenport, Iowa. On the fourth Friday of each month, your family can join Davenport Parks and Recreation for pizza, lemonade, board games, karaoke, and wii games. All ages are admitted. $4.00 per person or $10.00 per family. You must arrive by 6:30pm in order to order dinner. January 25: 10:00am Winter Bird Feeding at the Wapsi River Center, 31555-52nd Ave., Dixon, Iowa. For more information and directions to the Wapsi River Center call 563-328-3286. January 25: 1:00pm Migratory Mayhem At The Wapsi river Center, 31555-52nd Ave., Dixon, Iowa. After a Bird Prey Program, get set to see what it takes to survive migration as a bird in North America. You will also play “Migratory Mayhem” a family friendly game that highlights the triumphs and pitfalls that migratory birds face annually. Please call to reserve a spot in the game at 563-328-3286. January 25: 10:00am-11:30am Snowshoeing Fun at Duck Creek Park, 3300E. Locust St., Davenport, Iowa. Go for a winter morning of walking in the snow. This park offers a great opportunity to explore along the recreation trail in winter. If there is no snow, a winter nature walk will still take place. You can borrow a pair of binoculars from Parks and Recreation to view some wildlife. Call Parks and Recreation at 563-328-7275 to reserve a pair of snow shoes. Meet at the shelter at the bottom of the hill, shelter #1. The fee is $2.00. Try this activity out to see if, maybe, you would be interested in snow shoeing through Special Olympics.
