Youth Recreation Calendar May, 2014 May 1-June 5: 7:00pm-8:00pm Every Thursday Collage Theater practice will take place at the Nighswander Junior Theater on Eastern Avenue in Davenport. Collage Theater is an introduction to the magical world of theater specifically designed for teenagers and adults with disabilities. Each week, a variety of theatrical techniques will be explored including movement, improvisation, games, and dramatic activities, make- up and costuming. The program will end with a performance for the public. May 7, 14: 7:00pm-8:00pm Special Olympics Unified Volleyball at St. Ambrose University Lee Lohman Arena. Free admission May 7: 2:00pm-4:30pm Lovers of Cinema, rejoice! The Davenport Public Library on Eastern Avenue has a free viewing of Academy Award-winning films with “Oscar In The Afternoon.” For more information call 563-326-7832. May 8, 15, 22, 29: 10:30am Toddling On The Wild Side at Fejevary Children’s Center, 1720 W. 12th Street, Davenport.. This program is for 18-24-month olds and is free. Children will discover programs like butterflies, reptiles, bats, plants, and much more. May 9: 6:30pm Join a kickball league for this spring and summer. The cost is $10.00 for residents of Davenport and $12.00 for non-residents. Those who require assistance or constant guidance are required to have a family member or care giver join them to play. Registration includes a league t-shirt. May 10: 1:00pm-2pm Youth-kelele kids Ukelele Club is a fun and easy class for kids and covers the basics of Ukelele playing. From pre-schooler to tween, kids can immerse themselves in rigorous, but joyful music learning, immediately discovering the rhythm, melody, and songs of their ukulele. This one hour class at the River Music Experience hall, 129 Main Street, Davenport, introduces kids to the ukulele in a setting which is fun and relaxed. The class is $5.00. May 10, 11: Saturday (10am-5pm) Sunday (10am-4pm) Beaux Arts Fair in front of the Figge Arts Museum in downtown Davenport, 225 W. 2nd Street. The streets will be filled with excitement, tents, and people. Artists’ talents range across the spectrum with paintings of all mediums, limited edition prints, pottery, stained glass, ect. May 10, 31: 7:00pm Go To Ericson Field at Augustana College, 3703-7th Ave., Rock Island, to watch as the Quad City Wolf Pack take on the Sioux City Stampede. The Quad City Wolf Pack are made up of several talented athletes including former NFL and Collegiate players. They are part of the Midwest Football Alliance. Admission is $5.00. For more information call 111-222-3333. May 11: 11:00am-5:00pm Free admission to mothers on Mother’s day at Niabi Zoo. Treat mom to a special day at the zoo. May 14: 8:00pm “Full Moon Nature Hike-Sunderbruch Park. Search for owls and other nocturnal animals. The program fee is $3.00.You will enjoy a campfire with smores and sharing stories around the fire. May 17: 9:00am “America’s Kid Run” at Memorial Field at the Rock Island Arsenal in Rock Island, Illinois. There will be a variety of races for children from 3-13 years old. 100 yard dash for 3-4 year olds, ½ mile run for 5-6 year olds, 1mile run for 7-8 year olds, and a 2 mile run for 9-13 year olds. These are all for fun, and not timed. The race cost is $5.00. There will be activities after the race also. May 20: 10:00am (Every 3rd Thursday of the month from March-November) Garden Team Volunteer program at Vander Veer Park. This program is facilitated with assistance from their qualified horticulture staff. Through this program you will learn all about the basic elements that go into creating Davenport’s beautiful enabling garden. Sign up for one or many sessions by calling 563-888-2219. May 22-24: State Special Olympics Competition in Ames, Iowa May 22-June 1st : Spring Carnival at South Park Mall in Moline, Illinois. May 23 (5pm- 11pm), May 24 (1pm-11pm), May 25 (1pm-10pm), May 26 (1pm-close), May 27, 28, 29 (5pm-close), May 30 (5pm-11pm), May 31 (1pm-11pm) May 23: 6:00pm-9:00pm Friday Night Jam at the Roosevelt Community Center, 1221 Minnie Avenue, Davenport, Iowa. On the 4th Friday of each month, you and your family can join Davenport Parks and Recreation for pizza, lemonade, board games, karaoke, and Wii games. (You need to be there by 6:30pm if you want to be included in the pizza ordering.) $4.00 at the door or $10.00 per family. May 25, 26: 11:00am-5:00pm “Heritage Days” at the Dan Nagle Walnut Grove Pioneer Village. Enjoy the sights, smells, and sounds of yesteryear. The past will come to life at the village as interpreters and actors recreate pioneer life. There will be pioneer craft demonstrations, folk music and performances by the Wapsi Wranglers and a Kickapoo Indian dancer. Dan Nagle Walnut Grove Pioneer Village is located on the north end of Scott County Park. Admission is $2.00 for adults and $1.00 for children. Address is 18817-290th St., Long Grove, Iowa. For more information call 563-328-3283. May 28: 5:30pm-7:30pm Every 4th Wednesday of the month there will be a monthly craft club hosted by New Found Hope at the Bettendorf Community Center.
