In this overview, long-serving JA board member and contributor Naomi Musiker provides what is necessarily only an outline of her late husband’s distinguished career. The Editor, for his own part, would like to emphasize the invaluable contribution that Reuben made to this journal, whether as a regular contributor of scholarly articles and reviews, or as a member of the editorial board. On a personal level, Reuben was an unfailing source of warm encouragement, support and sage advice to him, for which alone he will be greatly missed. Reuben Musiker was born in Johannesburg on 12 January 1931, the youngest child of Judel and Sarah Musiker. He qualified with a Medical BSc from the Witwatersrand Medical School, having studied for this degree in order to save what was left of an incompatible period as a dental student, following a severe hearing loss. In 1954, he obtained, with distinction, a Higher Diploma in Librarianship from the University of Cape Town School of Librarianship. The following year, he started work at the Johannesburg Public Library, under the guidance of R F Kennedy, City Librarian. Reuben’s seven years at the JPL were extremely stressful but, from a career point of view, richly rewarding. He gained invaluable experience in the Periodicals, Reference, Africana, Cataloguing and Lending Services, rising to the post of Organiser of Branches. During this period, he began to publish books and articles, including the first edition of his Guide to South African Reference Books, which eventually ran to five editions. He also tutored students taking the correspondence courses of the South African Library Association. Reuben was an inspiring and patient teacher, and in later years advised and assisted many post-graduate students in bibliographical style, citation of notes and references. He was responsible for the compilation of a Style Guide for Theses and Dissertations, published by the University of the Witwatersrand in 1980. In 1961, Reuben successfully applied for the position of Deputy University Librarian at Rhodes University, Grahamstown, serving in this capacity for eleven years under Dr Frank van der Riet. During this period he obtained an MA (with distinction) from the University of Pretoria for his dissertation on The Special Libraries of South Africa (published, in 1970, by Scarecrow Press, US). He also played a part in Jewish communal life, as secretary of the Grahamstown synagogue committee. In 1973, Reuben

    CHAPTER SIX `BARLEY AND PEACE': THE BRITISH UNION OF FASCISTS IN NORFOLK, SUFFOLK AND ESSEX, 1938-1940 1. Introduction The local impact of falling agricultural prices and the looming prospectof war with Germany dominated Blackshirt political activity in Norfolk, Suffolk and Essex from 1938. Growing resentment within the East Anglian farming community at diminishing returns for barley and the government's agricultural policy offered the B. U. F. its most promising opportunity to garner rural support in the eastern counties since the `tithe war' of 1933-1934. Furthermore, deteriorating Anglo-German relations induced the Blackshirt movement to embark on a high-profile `Peace Campaign', initially to avert war, and, then, after 3 September 1939, to negotiate a settlement to end hostilities. As part of the Blackshirts' national peace drive, B. U. F. Districts in the area pursued a range of propaganda activities, which were designed to mobilise local anti-war sentiment. Once again though, the conjunctural occurrence of a range of critical external and internal constraints thwarted B. U. F. efforts to open up political space in the region on a `barley and peace' platform. 2. The B. U. F., the `Barley Crisis' and the Farmers' March, 1938-1939 In the second half of 1938, falling agricultural prices provoked a fresh wave of rural agitation in the eastern counties. Although the Ministry of Agriculture's price index recorded a small overall reduction from 89.0 to 87.5 during 1937-1938, cereals due heavy from 1938 and farm crops were particularly affected to the yields the harvests.     Purifying the Nation: British Neo-Fascist Ideas on Representations of Culture Steven Woodbridge, Kingston University Paper for the ‘Dangerous Representations’ multi-disciplinary Conference, Sussex University, June, 2001 Introduction Although fascism and neo-fascism have emphasised ‘action’ in politics, we should not underestimate the extent to which far right ideologues have sought to engage in the intellectual and cultural arena. This paper investigates the ideas, attitudes and discourse of the post-1945 British far right concerning representations of culture. I will argue that the ideological texts of the far right show a recurrent concern with the need for the so-called ‘purification’ of national culture. In essence, there is a belief expounded by the extreme right that ‘liberal’ cultural forms have resulted in national decadence, in turn showing the extent to which the nation itself is in serious decline. Consequently, there has been a consistent call in far right texts and statements for the ‘regeneration’ of the nation, together with the expression of a conviction that national culture requires ‘cleansing’ as part of this ambitious project. The far right’s key ideologues in Britain have regularly expressed views on what constitutes ‘true’, legitimate and authentically ‘British’ cultural representations, and they have often pointed to what is (in their estimation) ‘decadent’ versus ‘healthy’ cultural and national identities. It is intended in this paper to illustrate the far right’s prescription for political and cultural renewal through a brief exploration of the intellectual texts of three neo- fascist movements operating after 1945: the Union Movement (UM), formed in 1948, the National Front (NF), formed in 1967, and the British National Party (BNP), 1 formed in 1982.

(From The Armageddon Script, by Peter LeMesurier, St. Martin's Press, 1982: New York, p.252). One could easily think the above paragraph came from a Hal Lindsey book warning Christians of the evil that is to come. Incredibly, such is not the case. The above quote is the summation of The Armageddon Script by Peter LeMesurier a noted pyramidologist/occultist. It is a how-to manual for New Agers and intellectuals interested in staging a simulated second coming of Christ. The script they write, if successfully staged, could deceive "even the very elect." (1) It is logical and proper to question why one might expect the average person of intelligence to support such a Page 8. scheme. To the contrary, it is precisely the intellectual whose support is being courted and won for this undertaking. The "Armageddon Script" is based upon theories popular among the intellegentsia and they are being courted by flatteries.(2). The theories behind "The Armageddon Script" will seem familiar to those studied in psychological theories.

Liburd Department of History, University of Sheffield [email protected] Abstract This article seeks to intervene in the debate over the legacy of the British Empire, using the British Union of Fascists (buf) as a case-study. It will argue that, during the inter- war period, the buf drew heavily on earlier constructions of racialized imperial mas- culinity in building their ‘new fascist man’. The buf stand out in the period following the First World War, where hegemonic constructions of British masculinity were alto- gether more domesticated. At the same time, colonial policymakers were increasingly relying on concessions, rather than force, to outmanoeuvre nationalists out in the Empire. For the buf, this all smacked of effeminacy and they responded with a ‘new man’ based on the masculine values of the idealized imperial frontier. By transplanting these values from colony to metropole, they hoped to achieve their fascist rebirth of Britain and its Empire. This article charts the buf’s construction of this imperial ‘new fascist man’ out the legacy of earlier imperialists, the canon of stories of imperial hero- ism, and the gendered hierarchies of colonial racism. However, the bulk of this research is focused upon British Fascism, a term used to describe the three fascist (or professed fascist) groups that arose between 1923 and 1939. These were the British Fascists (formed as the British Fascisti), the Imperial Fascist League, and most famously, the British Union of Fascists. Other groups have attracted interest, but for the most part, this interest comes through the lens of fascist studies. In other words, a variety of far-, extreme-, and radical-right groups emerged between the wars, but they are usually studied insofar as they preceded or worked with fascists. The Britons, one such group, and their founder are the main focus of Nick Toczek’s Haters, Baiters and Would-be Dictators.
