Grand Valley Lanthorn Thursday, November 1, 2007 OPINION [email protected] EDITORIAL------EDITORIAL CARTOON Spreading the love Getting engaged while going to school can be romantic, but often compounds an already stressful situation. There is little question that people can find the love of their lives while attending college. We are preparing to become mature, responsible adults and why shouldn’t love be a part of that? However, as more and more students get engaged while going to school, making it official has its fair share of benefits and problems. Some students feel pressure from friends, family or other recently engaged friends to take the plunge themselves. Others feel getting older and graduating make the perfect time. Outside pressure is a poor reason for GVL / Eliot Slew getting engaged. That is where it can all go wrong. Finances are a crunch for almost every college student. YOUR INSIGHTS Imagine paying for a diamond engagement ring — not to mention the wedding itself — on top of paying for classes. Planning a wedding is a stressful event for anyone, but What do you think of students getting trying to plan the big day on top of school and the job you’ll inevitably have in order to pay for the wedding can easily compound the problem. Time and attention can become engaged in college? stretched thin, making it difficult to put a full effort into classes. Early relationships do not need to be tested with the extra stress. Will another year or two of being together without being engaged make a difference in the long run? Being engaged while in college is not necessarily a bad thing, just as long as it is for the right reasons. Is too much masturbation bad for you?

In the strictly physical sense, no (unless chafing becomes an issue). You won’t get hairy palms or blurred vision or any other myths that you were told to stop you from doing it in the first place. It’s a good way to practice safe sex and release sexual frustration without the risk of sexual intercourse. But, the real question is, how much time do you spend? As David Strovny, AskMen.com’s sex education correspondent, said, “If you begin looking forward to getting home only to play with yourself all night long, then maybe masturbating is not so good for you. After all, the fact that you’re looking forward to basically sleeping with yourself is stopping you from meeting other people, namely women.” It is also completely normal to masturbate while inarelationship, because masturbation can be less about sex and more about anxiety. Many men, when they’re feeling stressed about work or home life, tend to masturbate as a way to relieve the tension and anxiety, Strovny added. So whether you masturbate once a week or three times a day, it’s OK. It only becomes “bad for you” when it begins to interfere with your daily life, or it becomes a substitute for meeting women.
