With the phenomenal growth of the music industry, there is still one record company that is able to maintain a small label atmosphere within a large corporate framework without compromising its level of success. Chris Blackwell's Island Records goes to the head of the class for this miraculous achievement, managing to maintain aboutique opera- tion with amajor force like U2, in addition to such promising artists as Bourgeois Tagg, Melissa Etheridge, Shriekback and dance-floor maestros M/A/R/R/S. The employees of Island Records all contribute to the philosophy of keeping the working environment open and relaxed. As VP of Promotion at the label, Bob Catania must deal with all levels of the executive branch. "I think the personality of this label matches my personality. Idon't have to go to work each day and fight the political battles that you find at other corporations. There are certain tradeoffs, of course. A bigger record com- pany might be able to offer me more money, but here at Island Records, the people are very special. There are no overblown egos. When Ihave an idea, Iknow it will be heard without having to go through amajor ordeal. Now that's something you can't trade away" Frankly, Bob, we couldn't have said it better ourselves. Bob Catania, VP, Promotion, Island Records

DAVID STEFFEN: A&M OK, so we're finally getting around to Steffen, the VP of Sales & Distribution for Herb & Jerry's place. But, it seems we didn't wait long enough because his new photos (not avail- able at presstime) show David with a beard. We'd love that picture, after all it shows less of his face. Now to the hype. David spends his time interfacing with both the label field staff and BMG distribution. He began in Chicago and moved up through promotion and sales positions, reaching the West Coast in 1977, upped to VP in '80, and to Sr. VP in '87. David and his wife Dolly are proud new parents to daughter Katlin Hillary and will soon have her joining them in their worldwide travels. Mr. Steffan and company are also proud new parents of a UB40 hot streak. Also hot for them are Jeffrey Osborne, Giant Steps, Breathe, Toni Childs, John Hiatt, Joan Armatrading and more.
