  • Why I Love Anime by Kaitlin Meaney I Figured I Would Take a Break
Why I love Anime By Kaitlin Meaney I figured I would take a break from writing about feelsy stuff to tell you about why I think anime is so awesome and that there is a lot to love about it. Also because I literally don’t have an anime to write about this week, at least nothing I’ve watched a whole series of yet. This is me taking a break this month. Anime has been a big part of my life ever since I was a child. My first exposures coming from Pokemon, Beyblade, Sailor Moon, Digimon, and Yu-Gi-Oh just to name a few. As I got older I found that the medium was a lot bigger than just the few I had seen in Saturday morning cartoons. In high school I was exposed to my first few subbed anime in the school anime club. I would say that I only truly realized my love for anime while in that club. Now I am an active member of the fandom watching anything that tickles my fancy. Anime is a much appreciated medium of television but it is vastly underrated. It’s regarded as one of the nerdiest thing right next to Dungeons and Dragons and/or video games. But there are some things about this medium that set it apart from the others. Something that makes it unique and creates the devoted fans that exist in abundance this day and age. I’ll be talking about what I personally love about anime and what makes it so cool in my eyes.

  • What Is Anime?
1 Fall 2013 565:333 Anime: Introduction to Japanese Animation M 5: 3:55pm-5:15pm (RAB-204) W 2, 3: 10:55am-1:55pm (RAB-206) Instructor: Satoru Saito Office: Scott Hall, Room 338 Office Hours: M 11:30am-1:30pm E-mail: [email protected] Course Description This course examines anime or Japanese animation as a distinctly Japanese media form that began its development in the immediate postwar period and reached maturity in the 1980s. Although some precedents will be discussed, the course’s primary emphasis is the examination of the major examples of Japanese animation from 1980s onward. To do so, we will approach this media form through two broad frameworks. First, we will consider anime from the position of media studies, considering its unique formal characteristics. Second, we will consider anime within the historical and cultural context of postwar and contemporary Japan by tracing its specific themes and characteristics, both on the level of content and consumption. The course will be taught in English, and there are no prerequisites for this course. To allow for screenings of films, one of two class meetings (Wednesdays) will be a double- period, which will combine screenings with introductory lectures. The other meeting (Mondays), by which students should have completed all the reading assignments of the week, will provide post-screening lectures and class discussions. Requirements Weekly questions, class attendance and performance 10% Four short papers (3 pages each) 40% Test 15% Final paper (8-10 pages double-spaced) 35% Weekly questions, class attendance and performance Students are expected to attend all classes and participate in class discussions.

  • Hana Kloutvorová First Person Expressions Used by Teenage Girl
Hana Kloutvorová ORCID: 0000-0001-9367-2516 First Person Expressions Used by Teenage Girl Characters in Shōjo Manga1 DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.12775/sijp.2021.64-65.2 ABSTRACT This paper compares possible uses of self-designating terms among similar types of fictional characters in works included in a shōjo manga corpus. The use of first-person terms by similar types of fictional characters is viewed with regard to the role of an individual character in a given narrative and the categorization of a singular use of self-reference terms as a yakuwarigo type/sub-type. The data suggest that the overall variety in the use of individual first-person expressions in shōjo manga is relatively low – the most frequently used expressions were watashi and atashi – and the utilization of role language to signal a specific character type was, in fact, very limited. However, the use of watashi by the shōjo manga protagonists corresponds to Shibamoto-Smith’s (2004) findings regarding the first-person use by romance heroines. The frequent use of uchi by certain characters should not be classified as yakuwarigo but rather implies a very casual speech act performed by a character who can be perceived as active, lively and vigorous. KEYWORDS: shōjo manga, first-person, manga corpus, fictional language, yakuwarigo While the term yakuwarigo refers to the speech which consists of many elements of spoken Japanese, the expressions used for person reference can arguably be counted as some of its most salient features. Contemporary Japanese boasts a vast repertoire of expressions one can use to call oneself.
