CITY OF LOS ANGELES RESOLUTION Women's Lung Health Week WHEREAS, every five minutes, a woman in the U.S. is told she has lung cancer; and WHEREAS, lung cancer is the #1 cancer killer of women in the U.S., surpassing breast cancer in 1987; and WHEREAS, the lung cancer death rate in women has more than doubled over the past 35 years; and WHEREAS, women are disproportionally burdened with COPD compared to men in terms of illness and death; and WHEREAS, asthma and is more common in women than men; and WHEREAS, advocacy and increased awareness will result in more and better treatment for women with lung cancer, COPD, asthma and other lung diseases and will ultimately save lives; and WHEREAS, LUNG FORCE is the new national movement led by the American Lung Association, with the mission of making lung cancer and lung disease history-uniting women to stand together with a collective strength and determination to lead the fight against lung cancer and for lung health: NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that by the adoption of this resolution, the Los Angeles City Council hereby designates the second full week of May 2014 as WOMEN'S LUNG HEALTH WEEK throughout the City of Los Angeles and encourage all residents of Los Angeles to learn more about the detection and treatment of lung cancer and all lung disease. Co-Presented by~/PJ:~I MITCH O'FARRELL Councilmember, 13th District ADOPTED APR .2 9 2014 Seconded by: LOS ANGELES CITY COUNCIL CITY OF LOS ANGELES RESOLUTION JORGE METTEY WHEREAS,Jorge Mettey is the Senior Vice President of Noticias MundoFox, the new Spanish-language broadcast network launched in August 13, 2012; and WHEREAS,Jorge Mettey's extensive journalist background in television and radio began in his native country of Mexico where he headed the Department of Analysis and Television Supervision as well as the Office of Distribution and Exchange of Videos, Radio, Television and Cinematography (RTC)for the Ministry of Internal Affairs in Mexico City; and WHEREAS,Jorge Mettey launched a new phase of his career in 1989 in the United States as reporter, anchor and producer of news segments for Kall Radio Station in Los Angeles, California; and WHEREAS,Jorge Mettey joined the Univision Television Group as News Director in a variety of cities starting with KUVN- TV in Dallas, Texas in 1996. During his tenure, he increased audience newscasts ratings and was nominated for a national Emmy award in the community services category and upon returning back to Los Angeles, was promoted to Vice President of News for the leading Univision station, KMEX-TV; and WHEREAS,Jorge Mettey is the recipient of two prestigious Peabody Awards for the 19-part series on Latinos in the United States titled iJ15% de los Estados Unidos" in 2006 and the creation of the marketing campaign "Ya es Hora Ciudadania" in 2008, both produced for the Univision Television Group; and WHEREAS,Jorge Mettey is the creator of the UCLA Extension certificate program for print and electronic media reporters specializing in the Spanish-speaking markets; and WHEREAS,Jorge Mettey is the founder and owner of Watusi Watoto, lnc., having a close partnership with the Conservation Park African Safari campgrounds in Puebla, Mexico; and WHEREAS,Jorge Mettey is a staunch advocate and supporter of the Poblano community both in Puebla and in Los Angeles and strongly supports the Union de Poblanos en el Exterior: NOW THEREFOREBE IT RESOLVED,by the City of Los Angeles, that the Los Angeles City Council commends JORGE METTEY for his outstanding contributions, support, and advocacy to the well-being, health, and cultural and historic representation of Latinos in los Angeles and for his commemoration of the 152nd anniversary of the Battle of Puebla on May 5th; BE IT FURTHERRESOLVED,that Councilmember Jose Huizar, on behalf of the people of the Fourteenth Council District and the Union de Poblanos en el Exterior, extends a special thank you to JORGEMETTEYfor the contributions he has and will continue to make to our Mexican community, our beloved city, and all over the world, that will be long cherished by many. Best wishes for long, happy, and countless years to come. , PRESENTEDBY: .......3- JOSE HUIZAR ADOPTED Councilmember, 14th District APR 292014 SECONDED BY:",-"---,,,'--fLfL,-LI-'--P='---" LOS ANGELES CITY COUNCIL RESOLUTION Far East Movement WHEREAS, the City of Los Angeles commends the career and talents of electronic pop-rap group Far East Movement, the first Asian-American group to earn a #1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States with their single "Like A G6," and the first Asian-American group to break into the Top 10 on Billboard and iTunes; and WHEREAS, founded in 2003, the group was originally a trio comprised of high-school companions Kev Nish (born Kevin Nishimura), Prohgress (James Roh), and J-Splif (Jae Choung), all of whom grew up in downtown Los Angeles. They were close companions in high school and shared a passion for music together. The trio promoted their music online and began performing at local clubs and events in Los Angeles. DJ Virman (Virman Coquia) from LA's radio station Power 106 DJ joined the lineup a few years later; and WHEREAS, Far East Movement made their recording debut with the Audio-Bio rnixtape in 2005, followed by a full-length album, Folk Music, in 2006. The band's big break arrived that same year, when the Folk Music track "Round Round" was featured on the soundtrack to the blockbuster film "The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift"; and WHEREAS, two years later, Far East Movement released their second indie album, Animal, and began earning more buzz for singles like "You've Got a Friend," "Lowridin," and "Girls on the Dancefioor," the last of which reached the Billboard charts. As a result, Far East Movement were offered a major-label recording contract with the Interscope Records subsidiary label Cherrytree Records in 2010 and released their first studio album "Free Wired" in the same year; and WHEREAS, they have performed/toured with Lady GaGa; Rihanna; Justin Bieber; Jay-Z; LMFAO; Flo-Rida, the Black Eyed Peas, and Smore. The group released their fourth album "Dirty Bass" in 2012. On January 9,2014, Far East Movement released a new song titled "Bang It To The Curb" which features Sidney Samson; and NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that by the adoption of this resolution, the Los Angeles City Council does hereby recognize and commend the achievements of Asian American pop-rap act Far East Movement. April 29, 2014 PRESENTEDBY'~~ C'k ADOPTED JOE BUSCAINO Councilmember, 15th District APR 2 I} 2014 LOS ANGELES CITY COUNCIL SECONDEDBY,<6\ Ccq\ \0-- RESOLUTION Search to InvolvePilipinoAmericans (SIPA) WHEREAS, the City of Los Angeles commends the dedication and service of the organization, Search to Involve Pilipino Americans (SIPA) as they work towards enhancing the quality of life for Pilipino-Americans and other communities in Historic Filipinotown, as well as throughout the City of Los Angeles; and WHEREAS, since 1972, SIPA's mission is to enrich and empower generations of Pilipino-Americans and others by providing health and human services, community economic development, and a place where people of all backgrounds can come together to strengthen community; and WHEREAS, SIPA was co-founded by a coalition of progressive and passionate individuals within the Filipino,Asian American and Pacific Islander,and progressive communities in the late 1960's. SIPA's core values are based on the following Indigenous Filipinovalues: 1. Kawanggawa: From "awa" (compassion) and "gawa" (action), refers to charity, "a kind act" or "deed of mercy". Based on notion of pakikipagkapwa,or shared humanity. 2. Damayan: From "damay" (to involve, implicate, draw in), refers to the involvement/engagementaspect of service and community development. 3. Pagtutulongan: From "tulong" (help), refers to peer to peer assistance and in an egalitarian spirit of mutual self-help; and WHEREAS, SIPA's Health and Human Services Department provides after school enrichment programs where children can participate in academic, cultural and recreational activities. SIPA also provides language-specific case management and counseling services for youth and families. The Community Economic Development Department provides small business development programs, community health education and outreach, and affordable housing; and WHEREAS, SIPA's major initiativefor the next few years is to deepen the organization's existence and strengthen its mission driven capacity by developing a mixed-use, multi-faceted community and cultural center that will serve as the heart of Historic Filipinotown; and NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that by the adoption of this resolution, the Los Angeles City Council does hereby recognize and commend the efforts of SIPA for their dedication to making an impact in the lives of Pilipino-Americans in the City of Los Angeles.
