18 LC 117 0270 House Resolution 1265 By: Representatives Dollar of the 45th, Taylor of the 79th, and Carson of the 46th A RESOLUTION 1 Recognizing and commending the Georgia High School Fencing League and its member 2 teams; and for other purposes. 3 WHEREAS, the Georgia High School Fencing League (GHSFL) offers organization, 4 support, and guidance to high schools wishing to develop a fencing program, providing 5 students the opportunity to participate in a classical sport that demands physical fitness and 6 teaches patience and decisiveness; and 7 WHEREAS, USA Fencing, the sport's national governing body, recognizes the GHSFL as 8 the fastest growing high school fencing league in the United States and as the third largest 9 such league in the United States; and 10 WHEREAS, from a field of more than 421 fencers from the 19 high schools who participated 11 in the 2017-2018 GHSFL season tournaments, 85 men and 87 women were among those who 12 qualified to participate in the 2018 Individual Championships hosted by Northview High 13 School on January 27, 2018; and 14 WHEREAS, in both the men's and women's competitions, the top eight finalists were 15 awarded individual championship medals; and 16 WHEREAS, Lassiter High School fencer Kai Weissman captured first place in the men's 17 competition; and Drew Walker of Centennial High School finished second; and 18 WHEREAS, Chattahoochee High School fencer Edmond Han and Joe Gonzalez of Lassiter 19 High School tied for third place, and rounding out the top eight were Arthur Yu of Alpharetta 20 High School in fifth place, Ethan Kim of Johns Creek High School in sixth place, Jacob 21 Danzig of Johns Creek High School in seventh place, and Gabriel Chen of Walton High 22 School in eighth place; and H. R. 1265 - 1 - 18 LC 117 0270 23 WHEREAS, in the women's competition, Lyndsay Wagner of Pope High School captured 24 first place and Elaine Wen of North Springs High School finished second; and 25 WHEREAS, Chattahoochee High School fencer Elina Moon and Kelly Feng of Johns Creek 26 High School tied for third place, and rounding out the top eight were Gracie Gilbreth of 27 Northview High School in fifth place, Annabel Hsu of Chattahoochee High School in sixth 28 place, Caroline Kwon of Johns Creek High School in seventh place, and Radha Panchap of 29 Chattahoochee High School in eighth place; and 30 WHEREAS the team championships were held at Pope High School on February 2, 2018, 31 and in both the men's and women's competitions, the top four teams were awarded team 32 championship trophies; and 33 WHEREAS, the Alpharetta High School team of Captain Caleb Colburn, Russell Lea, Derek 34 Wang, and Arthur Yu captured first place in the men's competition, while the Chattahoochee 35 High School team of Captain Elina Moon, Annabel Hsu, and Jeannie Lee won first place in 36 the women's competition; and 37 WHEREAS, the team from Centennial High School of Captain Drew Walker, Nick Bray, 38 Jermain Leon, and Daniel Sandfelder; the team from Lassiter High School of Captain Kai 39 Weissman, Joe Gonzalez, Lester Hurtault, and Dakota Smith; and Chattahoochee High 40 School team of Captain Edmond Han, Xuan Ming Gu, Daniel Ryu, and Andres Troncoso 41 finished in second, third, and fourth place, respectively, in the men's competition; and 42 WHEREAS, in the women's competition, the Pope High School team of Captain Lyndsay 43 Wagner, Samantha Hasleton, Mackenzi Mims, and Sara Nelson captured second place; the 44 Northview High School team of Captain Maia Lum, Lauren Banks, Gracie Gilbreth, and 45 Halah Keramane took third place; and the Johns Creek High School team of Captain Caroline 46 Kwon, Christine Cheng, Kelly Feng, and Rita Wang finished in fourth place; and 47 WHEREAS, it is abundantly fitting and proper that the outstanding accomplishments of these 48 extraordinary athletes and the organization through which they compete be appropriately 49 recognized. 50 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that 51 the members of this body recognize and commend the Georgia High School Fencing League H. R. 1265 - 2 - 18 LC 117 0270 52 and its member teams and express their support for the continued growth of the sport of 53 fencing among Georgia high schools. 54 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized 55 and directed to make an appropriate copy of this resolution available for distribution to the 56 Georgia High School Fencing League.
