5 1.2 Very-High Frequency (VHF)

All the VHF Tag (Very-High Frequency) devices are active Radio Frequency Identity Transmitters, which means that they have their own power source (typically a battery). The VHF Collars, Implants and Tags provide a cost-effective and easy tracking solution with the aid of a small low-power transmitter. These devices transmit a pulse that can be located using a directional antenna over a range of a few hundred meters to several kilometers depending on terrain. These devices do not send or receive any data and are therefore only used for tracking purposes.

Fitment options

The fitment options are adaptable to a wide range of species, and can be used in the form of:

- Collars - Implants (Abdominal, Horn or Tusk Implants) - Tags (Ear Tags, Harnesses, Fish Tags)

19 2. TAG FITMENT

2.1 Collars

AWT Collars come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes depending on species and tag technology required. Multiple Tag technologies can be fitted to a single collar to provide better tracking and increase reliability. VHF Tags are generally fitted using their own battery. This offers a backup in the event of a failure in the other Tags fitted in the same collar. The table below shows the Tag combinations available.

2.2 Harness

For animals where traditional methods of fitting tracking equipment are not an option, AWT offers a solution in the form of a harness. Theses harnesses are custom designed as head or back-pack harnesses. The species size will limit the type of Tag fitted to the harness.

21 2.3 Implants

VHF Implants

VHF Implants involve the same radio telemetry techniques as collars, except that the device is either implanted into the horn, tusk or abdominal cavity of the animal. When tracking the animal, the user manually searches for signals on specific radio transmitter frequency using a Yagi antenna.

UHF and Lora Implants

UHF and LoRa implants involve the same tracking techniques as collars, except that the device is either implanted into the horn or tusk of the animal. When tracking the animal, the user manually searches for signals using a UHF Transceiver (UHF Tags) or Satellite tower fitted with a UHF or LoRa gateway.

VHF Abdominal Implant VHF, UHF or LoRa Implant

2.4 Tags

For animals where collars, implants and harnesses are not an option, AWT offers a solution in the form of a Tag. Theses tags are custom designed as bolt or glue on. Tags are limited to VHF, UHF, LoRa and GSM due to the size constraints.

Ear Tag Pangolin Tag

22 2.5 Patrol and Vehicle Trackers

Patrol and Vehicle trackers can make use of LoRa, GSM, GS-SAT or IR-SAT Tags, depending on the size requirements. Vehicle Trackers offer an optional tamper switch to detect if the unit was removed from the vehicle. Vehicle trackers are also fitted with a backup battery in the event that the unit is disconnected from the car battery.

Patrol and vehicle trackers can be programmed to take more frequent readings if movement is detected.
