Monday 24th August 2015 London Welsh Rugby Club 2015/16 Dear/Annwyl friend and (hopefully!) fellow London Welsh supporter, As someone with Welsh connections, you may be interested to know that London Welsh Rugby Club will again be playing at its traditional home of Old Deer Park, Richmond next season. I would therefore like to inform you of the Club’s Season Ticket and other offers for the forthcoming 2015/16 season. You may also be interested in our Wales Rugby World Cup Dinner with Warren Gatland and the senior players in the Welsh squad on October 6th (a ‘flyer’ for this event is attached). In World Cup year there is a great buzz around the club and we want to share it with you in what promises to be a very exciting season of Championship rugby. Despite a difficult season in the Aviva Premiership, there is a hugely positive feel at the Club as we draw nearer to the start of what promises to be a very exciting season of Championship rugby. The support of all those with any allegiance or sympathy for the cause of Welsh rugby being played in London, and building on a tradition which goes back to 1885, will be key to ensuring the continued success of the club as we strive to establish firm foundations for the coming challenges. What better way to announce our return to the Club’s spiritual home of Old Deer Park than with the visit of Bristol Rugby on Sunday 13th September (KO 3.15pm). Details of this game, and indeed for any other information regarding the club, are to be found on our website at www.london-welsh.co.uk. A warm welcome certainly awaits you all at Old Deer Park as we aim to win the Championship for the third time in four years. The Club has enjoyed a very exciting and challenging period in Oxford these past three years, and the decision to move back to Old Deer Park in Richmond has been well documented. Despite bringing Premiership rugby to Oxford and making a hugely significant contribution to the rugby clubs and schools of Oxfordshire through our community programmes, the Club believes the timing is right to make the move back to south-west London and there isn’t anyone involved in the Club that isn’t looking forward to getting back to winning ways and repaying the faith everyone has shown in us. Introduction In this project, I am going to either prove or disprove two hypotheses: • firstly, that the position of a rugby player will make a difference to what they think a great captain is; and • secondly, that for a captain to be great, they do not have to be the best in their position. I will prove or disprove these hypotheses through the following research: • conducting semi-quantitative surveys • reading and analysing 4 great rugby captains’ autobiographies (qualitative research) and their views on leadership and captaincy • and finally wider online research. Rugby is a sport and subject that I am very passionate about, and I aspire to play at the highest level. Currently I play for Hampton U13 Bs and my club (Twickenham) first team. I find captaincy interesting as I think it takes great skill and certain characteristics to be a good captain let alone a country-leading world-famous great captain. My personal experiences of rugby captaincy have been periodically with my school team and regularly for my club. My personal view of rugby captaincy based on my experiences is that you need to be the hardest-working player on the pitch at all times – you may not be the most skilled, but you can be the hardest-working, and respect from your team- mates and from your coaches comes from this work ethic.

    POWER HOUSE Finals are upon us… With just a few weeks until the final showdown, tensions are running high and every player and his dog is working that little bit harder to reach the top of the ladder. Who will bring home the cup? Lions claim trophy Rugby fans flocked down under from all corners of the world for the British and Irish Lions Tour during June and July 2013. The British and Irish Lions dominated the tour this year, falling short only once to the ACT Brumbies in a close win 14-12, making the Brumbies the sixth Australian team to hold the Lions try-less. This history-making game was the first win by a provincial Australian team over the Lions in 42 years. Not a great confidence boost for the Lions heading into their first test against the Wallabies. The first two tests featured in Sydney and Melbourne, playing out just how fans would want them to: close games and leaving the third as the epic decider. But perhaps with less penalty kicks. The atmosphere was absolutely indescribable, with chanting fans and roaring costumes that produced a sea of red and gold in the packed grandstands. The tickets were definitely worth every cent, because you can’t find excitement like that just anywhere. The Lions won the opening test 21-23 in Sydney, with a couple of Wallabies making their debut. Christian Lealiifano was taken off less than a minute into the game after tackling Jonathan Davies and knocking himself out. Israel Folau made more of an impact, showing his incredible speed and strength in a sprint to score the opening try, and following it up with a second before half time.
