National 12 and 6 Road Relays April 16th 2016,) And note – you don’t have to be a super star and finish in the first 3 to enter these events – it really is a matter of entering teams to show that Bingley Harriers and Athletic Club is still around as a club to be taken notice of, that we can turn teams out – and by so doing can give our up and coming young athletes a goal to achieve. I hope that the sub- committee set up to examine a strategy to take the club forward in the next few years will consider the club’s national standing and reputation in its deliberations. It would be a huge pity if the club lost runners because it was unable to field teams in these prestigious events.

I have maintained in previous reports that the success of our athletes at all levels depends not only on the dedication and determination of the individual athletes but upon the club’s coaches and I would like to record here my appreciation of the work done by Christine Oates, Junior Coaching Coordinator, and for many years Ladies’ Track and Field team manager, for her much valued contribution to the development of coaching over many years. Christine’s recent resignation has been received with much regret and sadness. Her dedication to the club will thankfully and hopefully continue even if we will no longer be seeing her on the field at Beckfoot School and at track and field meetings. She will be much missed. Fortunately we still have Janet Pearson, Martin Peace, Keith Daniel, Tony Kingham, Simon Wright,Andy Nicoll, John Merrick, Graham Smith, Phil Jones, Andy Warriner, Ian Eaton, the two Johns Capenerhurst and myself and the 27 UKA licensed coaches to carry forward Christine’ work and support our athletes. The reduction in amounts collected may be due to timing differences between the two years and/or differences in the membership ‘mix’. • Social events £0.1k deficit (£0.2k deficit). We generated a small deficit on various social events through the year, these including the Christmas trip to Malham, two backpack runs to Ilkley and the Jill Jones annual dinner. Many thanks to those who organised these highly enjoyable events. • Race refunds £1.2k (£1.4k) We help Team Managers by paying for teams in non-funded races such as West Yorkshire Cross Country and the Millennium Way and Winter Fools relays, however we are reliant on members reimbursing the Club to cover this outlay. Please ensure you continue to help us (and Team Managers) by paying your race fees promptly. • Training fees £10.3k (£10.5k). This is our main income component, raised by junior and senior members attending training sessions at Beckfoot School and Bradford & Bingley Sports Club and the Thursday evening pack runs. • Interest received £1.0k (£1.7k). We are protecting the majority of our investments in a fixed rate bond at the Skipton Building Society. This matured and was reinvested in September 2014 at a rate 1.45% for a term of 1 year. • Sale of stock £0.6k (£0.7k). Our shop selling Club branded clothing moved to a new online platform part way through the year. Our thanks to Steve Brooks for his involvement in stock acquisition and sales in the first part of the year and to Jill Jones who has consolidated the new online platform with her existing training night sales. • Donations £0.7k (£0.4k). Generous donations have been received during the year. We are very grateful for this which will help support the achievement of the Club’s ambitions. • Other income £0.2k deficit (£0.1k). We received funding from West Yorkshire Sport towards the costs of running after school ‘Satellite Clubs’ at Bingley Grammar and Beckfoot Schools. We also received £0.2k as our share of assets following the closure of Yorkshire & Humberside Athletics Coaching Committee. The deficit relates to a timing difference between expenditure already incurred and grant which is yet to be received. I would like to thank Andy Warriner, who has taken over ladies team manager; for his commitment and This season we have been back in Division 2 EC. We quickly discovered enthusiasm this season. It can’t have been an easy first season, being involved in a relegation battle from how competitive this league is, and how large the squads are of the clubs the start but I am sure he has enjoyed it and will continue to build the ladies team. we were competing against. Most of the clubs above us have a much bigger catchment areas and as such are able to put out much larger teams Many thanks to all our coaches who have assisted our athletes to achieve such great performances this including current International and Team GB athletes which is good to season. watch but very difficult to compete against. I am confident that our team will continue to improve and enjoy athletics in whatever league we are in That being said, it did not put off our small but determined squad who have developed an excellent team next season. spirit and a will to improve, we have seen some very good performances which have resulted in many personal bests. I hope you all have good winter of training in preparation for our chase for promotion next year.

At the moment we only have a small squad but we have some good individuals and with the addition of a few more B string members we could produce a far higher league standing. Colin Daniel Men’s Track & Field manager We are very fortunate to be able to draw on a very reliable source of officials and helpers who this season have gained us maximum points at all our meetings; many thanks to Jill for organising this valuable asset to our team without which we could not compete.

• Our throws squad has recruited Alfie Warriner who has stepped up from the juniors and is making good progress with his javelin throw. • Horizontal and vertical jumps have progressed steadily this season and the squad is slowly growing in numbers, a credit to their coaches. • Middle distance was affected by those competing at the English schools and injury but Tommy Thorp, Emile Cairess, and Danny Smithurst have all improved their performances. Oliver Robinson returned from his travels and instead of 400m hurdles tried the 800m producing 2-03, a very commendable time considering the circumstances. • In the longer distances although we lost one or two members this year we have had new senior members trying track and finding they enjoy the experience; Andy Siddle started training with John’s group and is making great progress in the 5000m, Tom Gomersal came and tried steeple chase and he won his first race, congratulations to Tom; I hope we can gain a few more participants next season. • Jacob Hurst is settling well into 400Hurdles and also making on in with the triple jump. • Demetric Nelson has been in fine form again this season equalling the league record for 100m; he also represents the club at county level and is a continuous inspiration not only to the sprint squad but to the rest of the team. Our sprint teams are a joy to watch particularly 4x100m who have produced some fine wins.

Another pleasing aspect of the season is the fact that the Youth Development League is proving to be of a good standard and encourages our younger athletes to compete at senior level and they really seem to enjoy being part of the senior squad. We also have members of the squad competing, who are at university yet maintain their commitment to training and competing for the club. This was my first time as senior ladies team manager after inheriting the role from Christine last season. Thankfully, Christine took the time to introduce me to several team members in 2014, so I was able to start understanding the essential make-up of the squad early on. Since my last report in 2014, Bingley’s fell ladies’ first success came Finally, the Ladies’ Fell Team Manager, Aly, will be resigning at the AGM in September so we look forward with silver medals in the British Relay Championships at Middleton to hearing who will take her place. A huge thanks to Aly for all her hard work over the past two or three Fells, East Cumbria, in October with a fantastic team of Emma Clayton years in managing the Ladies’ fell section. This is no easy task when you live so far away and unable to get (sadly, now running for Leeds City), Ellie Kitchen, Lesley Watson, Ruth down to the club training nights to put names to faces! Whitehead, Aly Raw and Vic Wilkinson. I hope you will all support the new Team Manager and it would be fantastic to see some of you taking This was followed later in the month by Bingley ladies winning Gold part in the English Championships next year. Let’s do our best to get a team out for each race in the in the Yorkshire Fell Championships at Great Whernside with Vic series. Details of the races will be publicised later in the year. Wilkinson, Aly Raw and Lesley Watson (Mandy Clarke bringing up the rear!!) In the meantime, thank you to all who have supported the Club over the past year. At the time of writing, Vic Wilkinson once again seems destined to follow up her English Championship successes of previous years as she is currently lying in first place with only one race, Guisborough 3 Tops, still to go for 2015. Her overall wins were at Lingmell and Bradda Niarbyl. Her first place is in spite of struggling round races earlier on in the year with a persistent injury. Becky Weight also targeted the Barbara Carney English Championship this year but, disappointingly, her preparation earlier in the year was curtailed Ladies’ Fell Representative with a stretch of “ankle tweak recovery time”. However, with only one race to go at Guisborough 3 Tops, Becky is currently lying in a creditable third place in the O/55 English Championship. Regretfully, Aly Raw has been out of action running-wise for most of the season with a prolonged pelvic injury. Her only race in the English Championship series was at Flower Scar. We all wish you well, Aly, and hope you’ll be able to get back to the sport you love in the future. Lesley Watson, Sally Robinson and Sue Fulton also ran at Flower Scar.

Vic was selected to run for GB in the European Mountain Running Championships in Madeira where her sixth place helped the GB team to win the Gold award.

Another notable win by Vic, was at Pen Y Ghent where she broke the ladies’ course record held for 22 years by Carol Greenwood.

Many of the Bingley ladies turned out for the popular Auld Lang Syne race on New Year’s Eve (Aly, Shona, Lesley, Becky, Sue F and Mandy), where some of them won a Woodentop prize. The route was shortened that day due to sections of the course where the amount of ice was considered to be dangerous. After a good run in the Baildon Boundary Way in April Sue, unfortunately, got injured later in the year and is still recovering from a strained abductor muscle.

As always, the Bunny Run series in April was well contested by Bingley ladies, Ann-Marie Roper finishing third overall in the Vet 40 category.

Denise Wright has been following her tradition of long trail events with her focus being on the Lakeland 50 in July. Her preparation began with the LDWA’s Hebden, Calderdale, event on a wintery day in January. This was followed by the Grizedale Trail Marathon in February where Denise took 3 minutes off her previous year’s time. Then came the LDWA’s Troller’s Trot in the Yorkshire Dales, the Keswick Mountain Festival 50k Trail Ultra and in June, the Wharfedale 3 Peaks Challenge. Then it was time for the “big one” in July where Denise finished 163rd out of 615 starters and 21st lady. In amongst the trail events, Denise also took part in the Three Peaks race in April, which was also contested by Lesley Watson.

Bingley fielded two ladies’ teams and one mixed team in the Gathering Winter Fools Relay last December. The ladies “A” team won their category and it was brilliant to see so many taking part for the first time. In the Millennium Relay in June, we entered two ladies’ teams - Bingley Angels and Bingley Belles. Again, there were some ladies in the BB team who had never taken part in a relay before, so well done all of you. In my opinion, one of the positive aspects of taking part in the relays, is not merely the race itself but also enjoyment of the route “receeing” which takes place beforehand. The U13 and U15 teams have had a really successful season this year. The first match of the season was a local one down at Cleckheaton. This year, I would like to congratulate four Bingley athletes who qualified, and were selected to compete In the last club magazine I wrote about the successes we had experienced at the prestigious English Schools Championships in Gateshead. Dylan Ferguson in the high jump, Emile as individuals in the club Championship, International call ups and the Cairess in the 3000m, Joanna Lawler-Rhodes in the triple jump and Aidan Leach in the 100m. Aidan went start of this year’s Championship. By the time you read this we will be on to win a fantastic silver in the U20 4x100m, with a timex that ranks them third in the UK this season. entering the final couple of races in the 2015 Club Championship as we draw near to the close of the 2015 season and handover to the Cross As mentioned throughout this season, the erratic size of our squad is our biggest enemy. We have a Country season. I made the decision late 2014 to try and complete the serious amount of ability within the club, and we should really be achieving, or at least challenging for Fell championship before the middle of October, allowing the team to fully promotion from this division. We are losing Aidan and Lily to the senior ranks, but gaining several others concentrate on the Cross Country season and not have clashes with races in both disciplines. from the age group below, so hopefully we can regroup over the winter and come out fighting next April. Venues: Shining Tor (Buxton), Pendle (Clayton le Moors), West Nab (Holmfirth), Coiners (Calder Valley), Malham (Keighley and Craven) and Turner Uphill (Broughton).

Andy Warriner The series started in March with the last event in June and we were represented in all the races with an average of 19 juniors for the championship. I was proud to see so many blue and white vests at all the races but more pleasing was the dedication I saw of all the Juniors in trying their hardest, not just for themselves but the club with all parents and juniors staying around to cheer on all the runners in their races . When the final tables were produced it produced satisfying reading for Bingley, with Ruby Firth taking 4th overall in the U12 Girls and Vicki Merrick also taking 4th in the U16 Girls. Bingley as a team took 7th place overall which mirrored 2014.

The Yorkshire Championship was held at West Nab, hosted by Holmfirth and organised with Dave and Eileen Woodhead. We saw some fantastic racing on a warm sunny day on a difficult route around the fells of West Nab. Honours on the day for Bingley were Ruby Firth who took a fantastic Silver medal and then backed up by Matthew and Victoria Merrick who each took a bronze apiece.

Matthew and Victoria’s achievements earned them a call up into the Yorkshire team for the Inter Counties Fell Race in Betws-y-Coed, Wales. Both had great runs on the day, coming away with Team Gold for Yorkshire in both the U16 Boys and Girls events.

Overall, I’ve enjoyed some lovely days out this year watching our juniors represent themselves and the club. I’ve seen some up and downs, the emergence of Eliza Findley in her first season on the fells, Johnny Sutcliffe showing some solid performances in all the English Championship races, Joe Childs and Dylan Thornton battling with each other in every race I’ve seen. The two Peace brothers Oliver and Matthew are showing the same skills and speed as their Dad and Uncle (Martin and Andy). On the downside, injuries are always part of our sport, ruling out some of the juniors for part of the season, Joe Carnelley, Ruby Firth and Lucy Miller who have been missed, but I know will be stronger and back to full fitness next year.

On a closing point, I would like to make a special mention to Matthew Merrick. Matt’s gone from Bingley Harriers Junior Fell Team Bingley Ladies Vets Autumn Report Report 2014-2015 strength to strength in 2015. Demetric Nelson lowered his personal best and club record in the 100m, to 10.59. This was done in the semi final of the Northern Senior Championships. He was unable to repeat that feat in the final but May brought us the British Masters road relays at Sutton Park, Birmingham. We had first M75 team, we left the championships very happy. He was also able to equal the North of England Track and Field thanks to Peter Covey, John Smithurst and Fred Gibbs. Horwich: Peter Pyrah M60, Les Haynes M70 and John Smithurst M75. We also won first team awards for M45 to 54 and M65 to 74. Aidan Leach achieved a lifelong ambition of reaching the English Schools. He competed in the 100m and the 4 x 100m relay. As part of the West Yorkshire Schools Senior boys team Aidan picked The very popular Yorkshire Vets Grand Prix series has provided 6 race locations to date, with attendances up a silver medal. He has followed that up with a personal best in the 200m. Although he has not regularly over 200. With 6 race results required for the overall placings, Jason Beckett ranks 15th M45 and Paul 11.20. As a coach I would take consistency over one off performances, as progression comes from Mitchell 7th M50, but both have only 4 races in so they should move up if they can run the remaining consistency, both in training and in competition. two. Peter Ellerton stands 3rd M65 with 5 races done. But there is still more work to be done. As we all approach the Paddy Buckley Round (61 miles, 28,000 ft of ascent, 47 Welsh mountain tops) and John Parkin having just off season and a period of reflection it is time to consider where to increase our coaching knowledge. completed it successfully as I write in 23hr 48min. Using STRAVA as Using STRAVA as a Training a Training and and Motivational Tool Motivational Tool

We all like to see how we are progressing in our training, or in my case, 5. Flyby! STRAVA automatically compares performances during races in different parts of the course. by how much I’m slowing down each year. Are we setting pb’s on our This and the use of mile splits gives a great indication of how you performed at different parts of the regular runs, are we running for longer, is our average pace getting race and where any strengths or weaknesses lie. This is for both Road and Off Road courses. faster? But everyone is so busy these days that logging all our training 6. Coaching. Your Coach or adviser can monitor your training incredibly easily by logging onto your isn’t at the top of our To Do list. STRAVA profile. Stats never lie, you can no longer dupe your coach by telling him/her that you’ve completed a session or long run when you haven’t. Inspired by Ron Hills Book, the Long Hard Road, I vividly remember as These are only a small number of the benefits that a Training Tool such as STRAVA can bring. There are a 15 year old faithfully completing my training Diary after every run noting how far the run was and how many tools available but STRAVA probably has more users than most. There is a fee paying option but I I felt. I even compiled Bar Charts for weekly mileage at the back of the Diary to show how much, or how feel that the free version provides everything you need to improve your running and keep you motivated little, training I was doing throughout the year. It was a long and laborious process and I tired of it after a on an ongoing basis. couple of years. So, if you’re a young athlete, a seasoned racer, a 60 minute 10k Runner or a total beginner STRAVA has But, guess what? Those days are long gone and now there are lots of tools we can use to record and track something for you. Why not give it a try, you never know it may be the difference between improving our training and progress using our phones or a GPS sports watch. your PB or not.

One of the most popular is STRAVA, which is available online and through a mobile app and best of all it’s Good Luck and I hope that it works for you. free!!

STRAVA logs your run, how many miles, your average pace, mile or Kilometre splits, total ascent and descent, weekly and annual mileage, where you sit on the Bingley Harriers Strava weekly mileage chart, pb’s for various distances, segment times and positions, shows your route, racing times and stats and much much more.

A large number of people use a GPS sports watch to record their training but using your mobile phone is also just as good and probably even easier. Just download the App, press record, run, stop and save and that’s it – Easy. With a GPS watch all you need to do is register your device on the STRAVA website and it will automatically download when you connect to your computer.

So in what ways can we use STRAVA as a Training and Motivational Tool? 1. Join the Bingley Harriers STRAVA group and compare your mileage, races and runs. Discuss with other members what training and races are happening and, if you’re like me, have a little banter about other people’s running, usually positive honest. There are approximately 45 members of the STRAVA Bingley Harriers Group but there are many many more members so come on and Join The Fun. 2. Monitor your training using the training Calendar and the Matched Runs Tools. If you run a route more than once STRAVA will automatically compare your performance everytime you complete that run showing whether you were faster or slower and even if you are (like me) getting slower over time. 3. Discover new routes in your area. You can download routes from the site. This creates variety in your training, improves motivation and prevents you getting stale and demotivated. 4. Use segments for speedwork. STRAVA and STRAVA users creates small segments and you are automatically timed over these section. Many are uphill but there are many that have been created that are flat. Connect segments in your area and you have a run that can be new and any distance of your choosing. Some people (Ged Callan is the Bingley Harriers STRAVA segment King!) use segments to get them out of the door when they can’t be bothered, you don’t have to think about a route but just run hard at specific points. There is nothing more satisfying than seeing yourself climb the leaderboard for a segment. pulton cup 2015 roll of honour
