ROTC Credit Should Go

The complex question of retaining academic credit for the f v Air Reserve Force Officer Training Corps AFROTC has once JUW again arisen at OWU For many reasons The Transcript feels that academic credit must be removed from the Aerospace de- partment of OWU The faculty at an emergency meeting last week maintained 15 that the coming community referendum should not be bind- ing if it decides to do away with credit for AFROTC because such action takes the initiative away from the faculty in decid- ing the OWU curriculum The argument follows that if the com- HAM m res iula munity is allowed to decide the credit status for AFROTC then it will next demand to judge the gym course requirements and even as one faculty member maintained may decide to do away with the English department This argument is ridiculous in the case of AFROTC because the faculty and the Univer- my sity has never had the initiative The Air Force not OWU decides the basic structure of the AFROTC curriculum Changes in the curriculum must be negoti- ated on an institutiontoserv- ice basis so where is the initia- tA A tive so jealously guarded by the faculty The faculty seeks to retain something it never had A university should control every part of its curriculum or it should admit that it will allow some courses to be controlled from outside the academic community What if our English department took orders from the outside One of the most valued freedoms of any good academic com- munity is the freedom to hire its own faculty members AFROTC instructors are not interviewed and hired by the University they are interviewed and hired by the Air Force The University has only the power to veto the recommendations of the Air Force How binding are any decisions made by the faculty concerning AFROTC The Air Force therefore dictates the academic stand- ards of the University the same University which fears the loss of its academic initiative If indeed the science of warfare is legitimate
