The Pacifist Witness of Dorothy Day Coleman Fannin Mentor
ABSTRACT Solidarity, Compassion, Truth: The Pacifist Witness of Dorothy Day Coleman Fannin Mentor: Barry A. Harvey, Ph.D. The truth of the gospel requires witnesses, and the pacifist witness of Dorothy Day embodies the peaceable character of a church that, in the words of Stanley Hauerwas, “is not some ideal but an undeniable reality.” In this thesis I provide a thick description of Day’s pacifism and order this description theologically in terms of witness. I argue that her witness is rooted in three distinct yet interrelated principles: solidarity with the poor and the enemy through exploring the doctrine of the mystical body of Christ, compassion for the suffering through practicing voluntary poverty and the works of mercy, and a commitment to truth through challenging the logic of modern warfare and the Catholic Church’s failure to live up to its own doctrine. I also argue that Day’s witness is inexplicable apart from her orthodox Catholicism and her life among the poor at the Catholic Worker. CHAPTER SIX RESPONDING TO THE STATE: CHRISTIAN ANARCHISTS ON ROMANS 13, RENDERING TO CAESAR, AND CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE ALEXANDRE J. M. E. CHRISTOYANNOPOULOS The two Bible passages most frequently cited against Christian anarchism are Paul’s assertions in Romans 13 and Jesus’ recommendation about “rendering to Caesar what belongs to Caesar.” Surely, the argument goes, these two passages conclusively prove, once and for all, the Christian anarchist fallacy to be mistaken. A closer look at Romans 13, however, suggests that Paul is in fact interpreting Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount—perhaps the founding Bible passage for Christian anarchism—and simply applying the turning of the other cheek to the state, therefore that Paul is not actually contradicting Christian anarchism but in fact articulating the peculiarity of its forgiving response to the state. Similarly, a closer look at Jesus’ saying suggests that very few things actually do belong to Caesar, and that it is just as—if not a lot more—important to also render to God what belongs to God. Christian anarchists also take note of Jesus’ bizarre instruction, in Matthew 17, to seek the coin for the temple tax in the mouth of a fish, because the reason Jesus gives for doing so is to avoid causing offence. -

The relatively small segment of Catholic antiwar radicals of this time period have been less examined. This thesis focuses upon the ideas, language, organization, and tactics of the Catholic radicals who employed the “hit and stay” model of protest, in which groups of mostly Catholic activists would break into draft board offices, remove draft files, incinerate or destroy the files, and then wait to be arrested. This thesis focuses upon one draft board action, perpetrated by “The Milwaukee Fourteen, composed mostly of clergy and Catholic lay people, in September, 1968. In particular, it examines the influence of the Catholic Workers and the philosophy of personalism in the beliefs and motivations of the Fourteen. This influence led most of the participants to view their antiwar action as witness- bearing, rather than simply an effort to impede the draft process in a major city in iii the United States. Through historical monographs focused upon Catholic radicalism, letters from the Fourteen and other archival sources, and through oral interviews, this thesis argues that Catholic Worker influences best explain why and how the Fourteen planned this action, turned their trial into an indictment of the state and the Vietnam War, and bore ultimate witness in prison. -

Scripps School of Journalism “Is It Not Possible to Be a Radical and a Christian?” Dorothy Day Navigates the Patriarchal Worlds of Journalism and Catholicism Director of thesis: Michael S. Sweeney This thesis examines the journalistic and nonfiction work of radical Catholic activist and journalist Dorothy Day, and her ability to be both faithfully Catholic and fully radical in her writing and work. Day founded The Catholic Worker newspaper and its accompanying movement. Although Day did not self-identify as a feminist and criticized the second-wave feminist movement, Day’s lifelong commitment to sharing the viewpoints of the marginalized, as well as her understanding of suffering, reflected beliefs that are in line with both feminist theoretical approaches and are reflective of Catholic teaching. As this thesis demonstrates, through her leveraging and adherence to traditions and teachings, Day was able to access male-dominated spaces, gain legitimacy within the patriarchal structures, and later share her more radical, yet faithful, beliefs with readers and the Church in order to create change from within in both the Church and the newspaper industry. -

Recently, at the ITMS Twelfth General Meeting (June, 2011) at Loyola University, Chicago, I had the pleasure of attending the program entitled “A Thomas Merton and Dorothy Day Panel,” which featured Robert Ellsberg, Tom Cornell and Rosalie Riegle. Ellsberg, the editor of this volume under review, has also edited a number of other Dorothy Day books, including Dorothy Day, Selected Writings,1 and the more recent volume titled The Duty of Delight: The Diaries of Dorothy Day.2 Along with Jim Forest and Tom Cornell, he also co-edited A Penny a Copy: Readings from The Catholic Worker.3 As editor-in-chief and publisher of Orbis Books, Ellsberg has also edited and authored a number of other books related to religion and spirituality. After dropping out of Harvard University in 1975, Ellsberg was a volunteer with the Catholic Worker movement and managing editor of The Catholic Worker newspaper for two years. Returning to Harvard, he received a degree in religion and literature as well as a Master’s in Theology from Harvard Divinity School. The correspondence collected in this volume is divided into six time-periods: Part I: A Love Story: 1923-1932; Part II: House of Hospitality: 1933-1939; Part III: Called to Be Saints: 1940-1949; Part IV: Bearing Witness: 1950-1959; Part V: Prayer and Protest: 1960- 1969; Part VI: All is Grace: 1970-1980. -

This course recognizes this complexity and seeks to investigate the confluence of religion and society within the United States. Collectively, this class will set out on an intellectual journey through the various facets of religion and society in order to uncover what lies at the nexus of these two regions. This course focuses heavily on spatial understandings of religion, including the physical place, journeying into public-private ideas of religion, however it will also venture into the conceptual spheres of how we understand religion and it’s role in the United States. In this sense, we will “map” religion through present preconceived notions of how we view it as well as cases that disrupt stereotypes, by looking at instances where religion disengages seemingly established boundaries. This course encourages students to confront their understandings of religion and move beyond these ideas to tackle religion within a new, academically engaged paradigm. We will discover that politics, resistance, and the struggle between public-private spaces envelops much of this discussion. NOTE: This course fulfills the requirement for a Diversity -
