In a post-institutional context marked by dwindling human and financial resources and a loss of confidence in the hierarchically-shaped church, decentralized ecclesial structures hold a positive and hopeful outlook for the local church. This dissertation argues for the plausibility of a decentralized structural dimension of the church as modeled by the Catholic Worker, Latin American base ecclesial communities, and Women-Church movements. In following an inductive method of ecclesiology, a description of each of the ecclesial movements is given with subsequent identification of the socio-religious contextual factors in which the movements emerged. The works of the founders and key theologians are mined for theological and philosophical principles that inform the decentralized nature of the ecclesial models. Analysis and interpretation, the last step in the inductive method, establishes that the decentralized ecclesial movements are governed by the logic of mission rather than the logic of power as in the institutional model and function to mobilize the people of God for creative and innovative approaches to the church’s missionary imperative. Therefore, as ecclesial structures that animate the church’s mission to continue the ministry and teaching of Jesus in the world, the movements remain anchored in the origins of the early church and are unified with the universal church by a shared mission. Lastly, the role of the centralized dimension of the church is affirmed as a function of preserving the cosmic scope of the Jesus-normed mission across all times and cultures. Implications of the study suggest that the postmodern climate presents the American Catholic Church with a unique opportunity to establish non-hierarchical structures that catalyze iii mission-driven ministry at the sub-parish levels. A tandem model is introduced in which the horizontal and vertical dimensions of the church are envisioned as structurally normative. Rhizomatic and arborescent imagery suggests a novel way the church can envision decentralized structures systemically, in tandem with hierarchical structures, and thereby maintain the tension of centralization and decentralization so vital to Catholic ecclesiology. iv DEDICATION For my boys and their generation. v ACKNOWLEDGMENTS The Church is never built but always in a state of being constructed. ABSTRACT In the light of the Mission-Shaped Church report (2004) and the foundation of the joint Anglican/Methodist Fresh Expressions Initiative (2005), churches were encouraged to seek ‘fresh expressions of church for our changing culture, established primarily for the benefit of people who are not yet members of any church’. The ecclesial reality of four case studies of new forms of worshipping communities across Methodist Churches in the Liverpool District was examined and analysed in relation to the official statements of the Methodist Church and the Fresh Expressions Initiative, questioning the rhetoric of “church for the unchurched”. Operating at the interface of ethnography and ecclesiology, this thesis employed ethnographic and negotiated research methods in order to establish why, in an age of declining church attendance, people are choosing to join groups that are doing church differently.

Christians are witnessing the advent of an emerging ecumenical paradigm, which, because it is not fully realized, is still realizing its full definition. The paradigm operates in a global context rather than a Eurocentric one, and even as it is more global, it is simultaneously more local. It cultivates shared praxis while being less concerned with the comparison of dogmas. Ecclesiology is also entering a new paradigm which shares many features with its ecumenical counterpart, particularly its global perspective and interest in shared praxis ahead of dogmatic questions. Even though ecumenism and ecclesiology share common trajectories, their journeys are unfolding in largely parallel rather than cooperative and mutually-enriching ways. This raises the question: What opportunities might arise from examining the shifts in ecumenism and ecclesiology together? This article examines how new methodological and practical developments in these two fields can form and inform one another. It studies the shift to synodality in the Catholic Church and the turn towards discernment in the ecumenical sphere as manifestations of similar theological commitments and a common interest in cultivating participatory processes. The seismic changes reshaping the religious landscape are transforming the relationship between ecumenism and ecclesiology; yet a strong connection between them endures and illumines paths forward for the church in the third millennium.

It certainly ought to have a big bearing on every Vincentian as it touches the core of our charism itself. Pope Francis covers a much ground in this document. He treats specifi cally and extensively various dimensions of ‘evangelization of the poor’, the Vincentian charism. The Pontiff begins the document with these words: “The joy of the Gospel fi lls the hearts and lives of all who encounter Jesus. Those who accept his offer of salvation are set free from sin, sorrow, inner emptiness and loneliness. With Christ, joy is constantly born anew. In this Exhortation I wish to encourage the Christian faithful to embark upon a new chapter of evangelization marked by this joy, while pointing out new paths for the Church’s journey in years to come” (EG, 1). What is this new chapter that he speaks of? Some think it is articu- lated in paragraph 27: “I dream of a ‘missionary option’, that is, a missionary impulse capable of transforming everything, so that the Church’s customs, ways of doing things, times and schedules, language and structures can be suitably channeled for the evangelization of today’s world rather than for her self-preservation” (EG, 27). The Pope says it is time to open a new chapter to channel all the energies of the Church toward evangelization rather than self-preservation.

In these deeply troubled times – in spite of the Cause for Dorothy Day’s canonization growing ever closer to being transmit- ted to Rome or perhaps even because of this impending huge step forward – we find ourselves asking, “Why do saints really matter?” In Saints and Postmodernism, Edith Wyschogrod suggests saints’ significance lies in their offering a possible new moral path in an age “grown cynical and hardened to catastrophe: war, genocide, the threat of world-wide ecological collapse...the emergence of new diseases.” We need, she says, that kind of “saintly boldness and risk” for an effort to develop more altruism, more kindness, more – no one need to be ashamed to say – more love. Dorothy Day’s life is a testament to the inspired yet arduous task of building a communion of love in a social order based on the common good and the gospel (see “Imagining Virtue,” p. 9). So much so that five years ago this September 24, Pope Francis in his historic address before the U.S. Congress, acknowledged her fortitude – “her tireless work” – placing her beside Lincoln, Martin Luther King, and Thomas Merton.     The Ecclesial Community: a place in which to grow our faith Marie-Madeleine Mwifi Bodibatu Branche Feminie Bondeko Democratic Republic of Congo The ecclesial community brings together the children of God who enter it by baptism which confers on the baptised the theological virtues of hope, faith and love. Thus the Christian attached to the risen Christ cannot live these virtues fully without the others. The word of God is the Word ''to live, to put in practice''. The first community of Christians was nourished by these virtues which strengthened their unity. ''The whole group of believers was united, heart and soul; no one claimed private ownership of any possessions, as everything they owned was held in common…None of their members was ever in want, as all those who owned land or houses would sell them, and bring the money from the sale of them, to present it to the apostles; it was then distributed to any who might be in need.'' (Ac 4, 32-35) Where there is Christ, there is love, unity and sharing. But by this love, coming from Jesus' heart, the Christian shares with the other children of God, not only nourishment, but also joy, sorrow, life, ideas, initiatives, enlightening thoughts, rewarding experiences in the family, at work, in prayer. These favour unity in faith. ''They may be one as we are one.'' (Jn 17, 22). The Catholic Church in DRC (Democratic Republic of Congo) lives the experience of the Basic Living Ecclesial Communities ''B.L. E.C.'', managed by the laity, bringing parishioners together weekly to share not only in the Word of God but also in food, joy, sorrow, illness, mourning, etc., in short, all social problems.
