Boletzky CNRS, Observatoire Océanologique, Laboratoire Arago, F-66651 Banyuls-sur-Mer, [email protected] ABSTRACT The smallest living cephalopods are coleoids weighing less than 1 gram when adult (the pygmy squid Idiosepius spp., several pygmy species of the genus Octopus), and there are slightly larger species among sepiolid (Sepiola spp.) and loliginid (Pickfordiateuthis spp.) squid, sepiid cuttlefish (e. g. Sepia pulchra); moreover there are dwarf males in three pelagic octopod genera (Argonauta, Tremoctopus, Ocythoë). A common biological feature of these small species are short life-spans, the minimum being 3 months in Idiosepius. Small adult size of a female, along with a short life-span, limits individual fecundity. The adaptive responses to this limitation vary widely among species or groups. The most striking difference appears in the respective egg sizes. In pygmy squid, an individual ovum measures less than 1 mm in diameter, whereas in pygmy octopus, ovum sizes vary between 5 and 12 mm depending on the species. In both cases, maturation and release of eggs covers several weeks. If Idiosepius demonstrates that very small eggs giving rise to very small hatchlings permit rapid attainment of small adult size, within a very short life-span, the high fecundity of Idiosepius suggests massive juvenile mortality, probably relating to the planktonic post-hatching phase. A suggestive difference in fecundity appears within the octopodids: Octopus fitchi has a planktonic post-hatching phase and has a higher fecundity than pygmy species devoid of a planktonic phase. -

We conducted a com- prehensive survey of interspecific body size patterns in coastal cephalopod mollusks, covering both hemispheres in the western and eastern Atlantic. We investigated the relationship between body size and thermal energy, resource and habitat availability and depth ranges. Both latitude and depth range had a significant effect on maximum body size in each of the major cephalopod groups (cuttlefishes, squids and octopuses). We observed significant negative associations between sea surface temperature (SST) and body size. No consistent relationships between body size and either net primary productivity (NPP), habitat extent (shelf area) or environmental varia- tion (range of SST and NPP) were found. -

CLASS CEPHALOPODA By Manuel Haimovici, Roberta Aguiar dos Santos & Luciano Fischer The cephalopods chapter in the first edition of "Seashells of Brazil" (Rios, 1985) by Haimovici (1985) included 26 species mostly based in bibliography (Voss, 1964, Palacio 1977, Roper et al., 1984) and a survey by Haimovici and Andriguetto (1986). In the second edition of Rios´s "Seashells of Brazil, 2nd Edition" (Rios, 1994), by Haimovici, Perez and Santos (1994), the number of species increased to 42 , due to additional information on the coastal cephalopod fauna of the continental shelf and upper slope of the Southeern region and revision of museum collections (Haimovici and Perez, 1991a, 1991b, Haimovici, Perez e Costa 1990, Perez e Haimovici, 1991, 1993). This third edition includes 86 species. Most of the new records were from a survey on the upper and middle slope of Central Brazil (Haimovici et al 2007), the identification of cephalopods from stomach contents of a large number of marine mammals, fishes, seabirds and other cephalopods from Southern Brazil (Santos e Haimovici 2002) and Northeastern Brazil (Vaske, 2005), paralarvae collected in plankton surveys in Northeastern Brazil (Haimovici, Piatkowski and Santos, 2002), deep sea commercial fishing (Perez, Martins and Santos 2004), bottom and midwater surveys in Southern Brazil (Haimovici Santos and Fischer. em prep) shallow water octopods from the Oceanic islands along Northeastern Brazil (Leite and Haimovici, 2006). Nesis* P.P.Shirshov Institute of Oceanology of the Russian Academy of Sciences, 117218 Moscow, Russia, [email protected] ABSTRACT The Recent Cephalopoda include 2 subclasses, 11 orders/suborders, 50 families, 18 subfamilies, 154 genera, 35-36 subgenera, approximately 718 species (some doubtful), and 42 subspecies. The class includes both neritic and oceanic species and both assemblages include pelagic and bottom-connected species. The assemblage of oceanic cephalopods include 84% of all families, 73% of genera and 48% of species of recent cephalopods. Neritic cephalopods include species living on or near the bottom on the continental shelf, usually not far from the coast such as Sepia and Octopus. Oceanic cephalopods include oceanic pelagic, nerito-oceanic, bathyal-pelagic and some rare distant-neritic species. There are two main principles in zoogeographic regionalization of the marine environment: faunistic and zonal- geographic (latitudinal-zonal). The distribution of shallow-water species will be described in terms of faunistic zoogeography, that of oceanic species in terms of zonal-geographic zoogeography. The maximum diversity of the cephalopod fauna is in the tropics and subtropics. The highest number of endemics is observed in the Indo-West Pacific Tropical Region, including the western Indian Ocean, in second place is the Eastern Pacific Region. There are also some bi-subtropical, bi-central, bi-peripheral, subtropical, north subtropical-boreal and south subtropical-notalian genera and species. The number of endemics in cold and temperate zones is not high, however, their rank may be high, particularly in the Antarctic. -

The distinction of squid species in the genus Doryteuthis is not easy due to their morphological similarity, lack of conspicuous specific characters, and overlap geographical occurrence. This difficulty has leading to an almost exclusive molecular approach, and a premature neglect of the morpho-anatomy. To emphasize that the squid phenotypic features can be useful to identify, as well as to perform any comparative analyses (such as taxonomy and phylogeny), two close species were selected as outset. Doryteuthis pleii and D. sanpaulensis are common sympatric squids in Brazilian waters, commonly used in fisheries, not so difficult to distinguish by external features of the adult specimens. The samples were analyzed from biometric data to dissections, and the found most expressive characters to distinguish them are the mantle-fin ratio; morphology of the tentacle club, its ratio compared to the mantle length; hectocotylus morphology and nidamental gland morphology.
