Sexual Maturation and Reproductive Cycle of Eledone Massyae, Voss 1964 (Cephalopoda: Octopodidae) in Southern Brazil
BULLETIN OF MARINE SCIENCE, 49(1-2): 270-279, 1991 SEXUAL MATURATION AND REPRODUCTIVE CYCLE OF ELEDONE MASSYAE, VOSS 1964 (CEPHALOPODA: OCTOPODIDAE) IN SOUTHERN BRAZIL Jose Angel Alvarez Perez and Manuel Haimovici ABSTRACT E/edone massyae is a small benthic octopus found along Argentina and Southern Brazil. Maturation and reproductive cycle were studied based on 226 females and III males that were caught at different times of the year with trawl nets on the shelf and upper slope off Rio Grande do Sui, between 3D· and 34OS. Females started to mature in the spring and attained advanced stages in the summer at a wide range of sizes. Neither fully mature nor spent females were found. Spawning is likely to take place during late summer on rough bottoms, at some distance from the trawling areas. Spermatangia were found within the ovary of maturing females mainly in spring. Fecundity ranged from 27 to 126, with a mean of 79, and was not influenced by female body size. Male maturation started in autumn at smaller body sizes than in females. Spermatophores were found in the spermatophoric sac from the end of autumn onwards, and the most advanced gonadal stages occurred in January. Mating seems to occur principally in spring. Eledone massyae is a small octopod with a known distribution ranging from southern Argentina to Rio de Janeiro (Voss, 1964). The species was first recorded in Brazilian waters by Massy (1916) as Moschites brevis Massy, 1916, then re- described as Eledone massyae by Voss (1964). In southern Brazil, this species was caught in bottom trawls on the continental shelf and upper slope between 40 and 350 m {Haimovici and Andriguetto, 1986; Perez and Haimovici, MS)I, frequently together with a congeneric species Eledone gaucha Haimovici, 1988. -

Arms III in both sexes stout and strongly curved inward, more obviously so in males. Suckers in ventral series of right arm I and arms II of males larger than dorsal suckers. Hectocotylus present, left dorsal arm modified: proximal end with 2 slender fleshy papillae (anteriormost papilla longest) and dorsolateral to these a blunt tongue-like lobe, all formed from enlarged and elongate sucker pedicels; 2 rows of suckers on arm proximal to fleshy pad; distal end of hectocotylized arm with sucker pedicels enlarged and tightly packed to form 2 double rows of columnar structures; suckers reduced with tiny, fleshy, slit-like openings. Club with 4 large suckers in transverse rows; suckers differ in size; dorsal marginal longitudinal series of suckers larger than those in ventral marginal series. Paired kidney-shaped light organs present inside mantle cavity on each side of ink sac. These were the teuthoid squids Bathyteuthis abyssicola, Brachioteuthis riisei, Mastigoteuthis atlantica, Galiteuthis armata, and the finned deep-sea octopus Grimpoteuthis wuelkeri. Caldwell, Chair Autotomy is the shedding of a body part as a means of secondary defense against a predator that has already made contact with the organism. This defense mechanism has been widely studied in a few model taxa, specifically lizards, a few groups of arthropods, and some echinoderms. All of these model organisms have a hard endo- or exo-skeleton surrounding the autotomized body part. There are several animals that are capable of autotomizing a limb but do not exhibit the same biological trends that these model organisms have in common. As a result, the mechanisms that underlie autotomy in the hard-bodied animals may not apply for soft bodied organisms. A behavioral ecology approach was used to study arm autotomy in the octopus, Abdopus aculeatus. Investigations concentrated on understanding the mechanistic underpinnings and adaptive value of autotomy in this soft-bodied animal. A. aculeatus was observed in the field on Mactan Island, Philippines in the dry and wet seasons, and compared with populations previously studied in Indonesia. -

Vertical distribution and migration patterns (both diel and ontogenic) are not known for the majority of deep-water cephalopods. These varying patterns are of interest as they have the potential to contribute to the movement of large amounts of nutrients and contaminants through the water column during diel migrations. This can be of particular importance if the migration traverses a discrete layer with particular properties, as happened with the deep-water oil plume located between 1000 and 1400 m during the Deepwater Horizon (DWH) oil spill. A Monograph of the Cephalopoda of the North Atlantic
A JVIONOGRAPH OF THE CEPHALOPODA OF THE NORTH ATLANTIC 1. THE FAMILY LYCOTEUTHIDAE1 GILBERT L. VOSS lnstitute of Marine Science, University of Miami ABSTRACT The family Lycoteuthidae is revised on a world wide basis. An historical account is followed by a discussion of the anatomy, food, depth range and geographical distribution. The taxonomic status with full synonymy is given for each species including keys for differentiation. The family and subfamilies are redefined and new generic diagnoses are given along with type citations. Oregoniateuthis lorigera (Steenstrup, 1857) is described in full for the first time and Lycoteuthis diadema, Oregoniateuthis springeri, Selenoteuthis scintillans, Nematolampas regalis, and Lampadioteuthis me- galeia are described and illustrated. Leptodontoteuthis inermis Robson, 1926 is placed in the synonymy of Lycoteuthis diadema (Chun, 1900). The phylogenetic relationships of the Lycoteuthidae are discussed as well as the relationship of the genera within the family. The possibility is con- sidered, on the basis of their occurrence within two different genera, that the males of the Iycoteuthids possess paired, functional genitalia. INTRODUCTION The bathypelagic squids of the family Lycoteuthidae have held the interest of biologists since Chun first encountered the living animals in the nets of the VALDIVIA. His account of their spectacular light dis- plays has become a classic in the literature on bioluminescence. Unfor- tunately, adult specimens are rarely encountered. However, since 1900 when the first species was described, sixteen specimens of adult size have been taken and six genera erected for their disposal of which five are monotypic and three are represented solely by unique specimens. The addition in the last four years of two new genera and the acquisition of additional specimens, both larval and adult, of Lycoteuthis diadema have shed some new light upon the family.
