The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport (MOLIT) repeatedly announced that it would make a notification on the Basic Plan of the Jeju 2nd airport project within October. If it is notified, the project becomes legally effective. It was the most critical task for people to stop such a MOLIT notification. Further, despite denial by MOLIT and the Jeju Island government, it is quite clear that the 2nd airport would be an air force base. Therefore, one of the urgent tasks at hand was for people to pressure the Ministry of Environment (MOE) to disagree with the Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) made by the MOLIT, which is full of lies and omissions. The Jeju islanders also pressured the Island Council to create a special committee to gather public opinion on the project, as demanded by more than 80% of islanders. People concentrated their protest in front of the Island government & Council buildings in Jeju City, as well as in front of the central government complex in Sejong City & the Presidential House in Seoul. -

43 Text and Image Studies: Theory of East Asian Cultural Diffusion I Lo-fen* Abstract The word ‘Text’ in Text and Image Studies encompasses sound/ language text, textual body, word/ literary text and image text. ‘Image’ represents not only pictorial illustrations, but also symbols, icons, logos/ trademarks and other forms of visual rhetoric, as well as videos, lines and printed material. Text and Image Studies offers valuable approaches in the investigation and analysis of the complexity of the interplay, interrelations and disjunctions between text and image in various forms of visual media. Chief subjects of interest include creativity and innovation, distribution and dissemination, sociopolitical implications, impact on consumerism, psychological effects on human cognition, etc. The theoretical application of Text and Image Studies in the East Asian cultural exchange discussed in this article is the fruit of almost two decades of research. The article uses a seven-pronged approach – canonization, politi- cization, conceptualization, abstraction, localization, standardization, modular- ization– in the study of East Asian cultural exchange in variety of regions, time periods, and genre in an attempt to explore new research ideologies and theories. 1. THE CULTURAL PRODUCTION AND CONSUMPTION OF THE FIT BODY IN SOUTH KOREA: FOCUS ON ESTABLISHED – OUTSIDER FIGURATION OF THE BODY IN THE FITNESS FIELD Thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Leicester by Hye Won Choo Department of Media and Communication University of Leicester 2015 The Cultural Production and Consumption of the Fit Body in South Korea: Focus on Established - Outsider Figuration of the Body in the Fitness Field ABSTRACT This thesis examines the ways in which the fit body has acted as an established form of capital in Korea. In addressing this question, this research explores the theoretical and methodological links between Bourdieu‘s and Elias‘s perspectives. In particular, using the fitness field as the context, this study examines specific types of valued capital and assesses the ways in which figurations between actors are produced and reproduced in ways that reinforce and sometimes disrupt ‗established-outsider‘ (E- O) figurations in other fields (such as the academic field). In working toward its findings, this work makes use of multiple methods, including historical media analysis, media production study, interviews, and comparison of Gangnam and Gangbuk, to name but a few. This diverse array of approaches allows for a more robust and nuanced look at the E-O figuration of the body (Elias & Scotson, 1994) that grounded the production and reproduction of body capital and habitus in the fitness field. The findings also reveal that fit bodies are pivotal to the formation of symbolic power in Korean socio-historical contexts. E-O figuration of fitness media production teams influences media texts. -

Six of the 13 views Jeong (1676-1759) produced form the starting point of “Diamond Mountains: Travel and Nostalgia in Korean Art” at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. About 50 miles within today’s North Korean southern border, the mountain has been in the news as North and South Korea negotiate whether and where to host joint celebrations during the Olympics. Visit the show, and you will understand why this site is such a big deal. -

Journeys to the past: travel and painting as antiquarianism in Joseon Korea Karwin Cheung s1487043 Universiteit Leiden 2016/2017 abstract This study analyzes the transnational interaction of Korean art during the early modern period. By examining practices of collecting and travel I aim to explore how cultural and visual patterns from Chinese antiquity are re-contextualized in Joseon Korean art. In this process not only a specific Korean understanding of Chinese antiquity was developed, but Chinese antiquity was in turn also projected upon the Korean landscape. I further argue that artistic developments during the early modern period in Korea, such as true-view painting, should be understood from this transnational perspective, rather than from sino- centric or nativist views. Where I Work Suki Seokyeong Kang PHOTOGRAPHS AND TEXT BY HG MASTERS Drawing on Korean cultural traditions to assemble a mise-en-scène of today traditional buildings—and several large trees, with the high-rises of central Seoul in the distance. An ofce area of desktop computers and bookshelves occupies the window-side of the space. Kang’s thin-framed painted sculptures, towers of paintings, wool-wrapped forms and woven mats are stacked, hanging and arrayed around the rest of the space, like the backstage of a theater. Over cofee, Kang began our conversation by proposing that she and I see the practice of painting in a diferent manner, based on our cultural heritages. She was trained in Korean painting at Ewha Womans University, where she still teaches, and explained that the way she learned to think about painting was that everything had to be channeled or “poured out” onto the confines of paper in the form of highly controlled brushstrokes.
