We can see the glacier and its walls at the end of our sight as they highlight the whole scene. Mr. Arturo, the captain, kindly offered me a very informative talk on the surroundings. After an hour of sailing we reached the front of the glacier. The deep blue color is unbelievable. The captain slowed down the engine so we could appreciate the magic of it all. The crew offered us a Pisco Sour or a Whisky chilled with ice of the very glacier! Now going back to the Hotel the captain was going among the ices so we could appreciate the different shades of blue which are really impressive. I realized that the deepest blue is when you are watching at 90º degrees from the sun location. When we were with the sun in our back ther was no color, but when in at one side it was really blue. We were lucky. The sky was completely clear and a lot of ices were floating all around. I hope you have the same fortune! Good luck and enjoy your trip on Lago Grey. The events thus described showed that the humanitarian ideal was affirmed throughout. The Revue internationale has already had occasion to recall (April 1958) that in Latin America, to quote only one example, a warm-hearted Brazilian woman, Anna Ne"ry, gave proof of this spirit during the war between Brazil and Paraguay. We have pleasure in publishing the following translation of the article which appeared in the Review of the Chilean Red Cross : On December 8, 1851, in Chile, the battle of Loncomilla took place on the banks of the river of the same name, a tributary of the Maule. This battle was fought between Government troops com- manded by General Manuel Bulnes, victor of the Restoration cam- paign in Peru, and the opposition forces of the South commanded by General Jose Maria Cruz de Conception, who had been chief of Staff to General Bulnes during the Peruvian campaign of 1839. This battle was exceptionally hard, since out of a total strength of 7,000 for the two armies, there were only 2,700 survivors. At Talca, the most important town and the one nearest the scene of action, 2,000 men were buried and many others were drowned in the Loncomilla river which had, according to tradition, turned red on account of the blood of all the dead swept down by the current.

    MANUEL BULNES PRIETO POR CAROLINA HERBSTAEDT MANRÍQUEZ LICENCIADA EN HISTORIA Durante la navidad de 1799, nació en la ciudad de Concepción Manuel Bulnes Prieto, quien dedicó su vida entera al servicio de su patria. Militar y político destacado, defendió los intereses de Chile en distintas etapas de su vida, no solo en el área militar, sino también en el político, alcanzando altos puestos en ambos ámbitos y honrando a la patria que servía de la mejor manera posible. Manuel Bulnes había nacido en el seno de una familia de tradición militar. Hijo del capitán Manuel de Bulnes Quevedo y de Carmen Prieto Vial, fue enrolado en 1811 junto con su hermano menor como cadete en la misma unidad en la que servía su padre, el Batallón de Infantería de Línea1 de Concepción, siendo un niño de 12 años, iniciando así su carrera de armas. Esta tuvo un agitado comienzo cuando, mientras servía en el regimiento en el que su padre era oficial, llegó al país la expedición del brigadier Antonio Pareja en 1813. En consideración que su unidad se había plegado a la causa realista, tanto Manuel como su hermano se retiraron del servicio, aludiendo problemas de salud para así evitar defender causas que consideraban ajenas. Si bien su padre había jurado lealtad al Rey de España, Manuel Bulnes, al igual que su hermano Francisco, eran patriotas gracias a la influencia de su madre y la familia de ésta. El conflicto en la familia se vio agravado y más pronto que tarde se produjo una dolorosa separación que no lograría resolverse.

Contra esta mirada proponemos como lectura una visión histórica-antropológica que de cuenta de la transformación del pacto colonial en republicano y el modo como ha sido comprendido por la sociedad mapuche. Una manera de aproxi- marnos esa historia es a través del los hermanos Budaleo-Dumuleo, caciques gobernadores del ayllarehue de Arauco.

    LA PRESIDENCIA DE MANUEL BULNES PRIETO 1841 – 1851 POR MARÍA PAZ LÓPEZ PARRA MIEMBRO ACADÉMICO El gobierno presidencial de Manuel Bulnes Prieto, que se extendió por dos periodos consecutivos durante el decenio de 1841 – 1851, es considerado uno de los más importantes del siglo XIX. Si bien su mandato se enmarca en la denominada “República Conservadora”, las obras y reformas llevadas a cabo durante esa década tuvieron un carácter eminentemente modernizador, transformándose en la base para la consolidación del régimen republicano. El Chile de esos años, pese a haber declarado su independencia hacía más de dos décadas, aún contaba con casi todos los rasgos coloniales. El quiebre político se había producido pero la sociedad chilena podía definirse como conservadora y continuadora de la mayoría de los rasgos del periodo hispánico. Desde el punto de vista del proyecto nacional republicano, cambiar estas características demandaba una serie de reformas de fondo que permitiera la construcción de un Estado Moderno acorde a los nuevos cánones que empezaban a imperar en el siglo XIX. Esta sería la misión que asumiría el gobierno de Manuel Bulnes. Asumiría la presidencia de la República con solo 42 años de edad, teniendo un consolidado prestigio por sus hazañas y victorias militares que le valían los más altos reconocimientos, tanto en Chile como el exterior. A su favor, contaba con una intachable carrera militar que había comenzado desde los tiempos de la independencia, pasando por las posteriores campañas sostenidas contra las montoneras de Benavides y los hermanos Pincheira. Pero por sobre todo, lo investía la gloria conseguida en la Guerra contra la Confederación Perú-boliviana (1836-1839) que le valió una enorme popularidad, la misma que le hizo ganar las elecciones de julio de 1841 con más de dos tercios de los sufragios.
