Turf Football Presentation Combined.Pdf Chestermere Field Upgrade Project 2018 Chestermere Mayor & Council: Today we wish to introduce to you a project we are working on, a project that will greatly benefit the citizens of Chestermere and the surrounding area. We are working towards an upgrade of the athletic field(s) at Chestermere High School (CHS); this upgrade will move it from grass to long pile artificial field turf . This presentation today is strictly an introduction; there is not a specific request at this time other than support in principal. We currently have 3 options we are considering: Option# 1 • Installation of turf on Utley field at CHS • Upgrade to spotters box and storage and concession area • Installations of change rooms for players and storage area for equipment Option# 2 • Installation of turf on current practice field to the East of the CHS parking lot • Installation of lights, scoreboard, stands on this field • Installation of dressing rooms and a promenade • Installation of a two-lane turf track Option # 3 • Installation of turf on current practice field to the East of the CHS parking lot • Installation of a two lane turf track • Option #1 would be included in this option Why? The current playing surface is the one of the worst in the greater Calgary area, it is full of rocks and gopher holes and has an uneven surface. It is extremely hard and there is no opportunity for irrigation which makes the above problems far worse. The CHS soccer team no longer plays on this field due to safety reasons. The football team currently plays on Utley field, but it is a very poor surface. The condition of the fields does not lend itself to much community use. The need for artificial surfaces in the greater Calgary area is enormous; currently there are very few fields that are open to the general public, 3 at Shouldice, one at Rundle, one at Ernest Manning, one at the Edge School and one in Cochrane. All these fields are at maximum use. There are 3 outdoor field turf fields at the Calgary Soccer Center, the only fields on the east side of the city. Having field(s) in Chestermere will attract people from far and wide to practice and play. These fields can be used for virtually any sport training and many sport games (soccer, football, baseball, lacrosse, rugby and ultimate) The addition of the track, in option # 2/ 3 opens up opportunity to yet another type of athlete. Chestermere and area athletes of all ages will be the greatest benefactors of this project with the ability to play and practice all types of sports while there is still snow and mud on the ground. Having our children playing on smooth, soft, and safe fields from the time of the earliest soccer programs 3 or 4 years old until they are senior athletes could result in older athletes having a longer and more productive career. Chestermere and area teams will have the first opportunity to use these fields. Those groups who are involved early and financially commit to this project will receive preferential times and pricing for this surface(s). A turf field allows for much longer use periods and greater consistency and safety for the players. A perfectly manicured grass field is still considered by FIFA to be a better surface than turf, but then we are looking at a facility like Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton, prior to its transformation to turf, where it saw 10 – 12 football games a year at most, 1 – 2 International soccer games and a concert every few years. This is hardly good value for the dollar, whereas a facility like McMahon Stadium is used over 200 times per year. With proper snow clearing equipment, included in our proposal, these field could be accessible year-round. Where we are at As you can see we have two conceptual drawings and we have engaged a design company to help us complete a third design and budget. We have full approval from the Rocky View School Division to build on their land. We are trying to bring this all together for construction as early as the fall of 2019 or the spring of 2020. We plan to look to all forms of government, private industry and individuals for financial contributions to our project. As I said at the beginning, we do not have a firm number for you today, but we wanted to let you know what we are doing and why, and we hope you can support our efforts in every way you can, as we put together all of the financial and detailed design information you will require prior to us asking for any specific funding. We are available at any time to meet to discuss all of this in much greater detail and we hope you can support our project as we begin to ramp up our efforts to bring this first class facility to Chestermere and surrounding areas.
