ADVANCES IN CHEMICAL AND MATERIALS SCIENCE (ICCM - 2019) ABOUT MANGAL Mangalore University with a noble vision ‘to evolve as a national center of advanced studies and to cultivate quality human resource’ was established in 1980. The campus of Mangalore University called ‘Mangalagangothri’ is located about 20 km to the south east of the historic port city of Mangaluru. The mission of the University is to provide excellent academic, physical, administrative, infrastructural and moral ambience. The University is committed to fulfil the objectives stated in the mission, by providing good infrastructural facilities to develop the University as a national center in all spheres - teaching, learning, research and governance. In addition, it aims at excellence in teaching, learning and research and to contribute towards building a socially-sensitive humane inclusive society. Mangalore University has grown impressively since its inception. The University has taken steps to establish contacts through exchange of scholars with Universities in USA, UK, Finland, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Norway, Germany and other countries. Research performance of Mangalore University is evidenced in the award of Rs. 16.6 crores grant by the Department of Science and Technology (DST) under PURSE scheme. The Microtron Centre has developed with the support of the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), is a national facility. ORE UNIVERSITY The Centre for Application of Radiation and Radioisotope Technologies (CARRT) and Centre for Advanced Research in Environmental Radioactivity (CARER) are research centers which collaborate with a large number of research institutions at regional, national and international levels. The Ocean and Atmospheric Science and Technology Cell (OASTC) set up in collaboration with Department of Ocean Development (DOD), acts as a nodal centre to promote research in ocean and atmospheric sciences. Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) in the first phase has identified Mangalore University as one of the beneficiaries of Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA) Grant. Various surveys and independent research studies have placed Mangalore University in very high positions. H-index of the University is 65 indicating the excellent research progress. As per the ‘Week Education Survey’, the ranking of Mangalore University is 34 among multi-purpose Indian Universities and it stands at 14th position among Southern Universities. The University has been placed at Number 3 in ‘Green Matric Ranking’ in the country and as 191st World’s Most Sustainable University-2018 as reported by ‘UI Green Metric World University Rankings’. Additionally, it has also been ranked 43rd as per ‘QS World University Ranking’ and as 2nd in Chemical Sciences as per ‘SCOPUS’ rankings. Today, true to its vision and mission, Mangalore University stands poised to reach greater heights of excellence in the years to come. The Department of Chemistry was established in 1981 with an intake of 13 students and has grown immensely during the last four decades. Presently, the department is running three M.Sc. Courses; M.Sc. in Chemistry, Applied Chemistry and Organic Chemistry with a combined intake of about 140 students and also Ph.D. programme in Chemistry. As on today, the Department has produced over 1500 M.Sc. graduates, 50 M.Phil. and over 225 Ph.D. Degree holders. Presently about 60 Research Scholars are working in the department for their Doctoral Degree. The department is supported with UGC-SAP (I Phase & II Phase) and DST-FIST (I Phase) Grants. The faculty members are actively engaged in research in Frontier Areas of Chemistry and Interdisciplinary Areas. Research Project Grants of about Rs. 2 Crores have been sanctioned to the department by UGC, DST, DAE, NPCIL, KSCST, BRNS etc. The department has also entered into MoU with Industries and R&D organizations such as Nuclear Power Corporation of India, Kaiga; Rallis Agrochemical Research Station, Bengaluru; Strides Arcolab, Mangaluru. The department has contributed to Science significantly by carrying out research and published over 2700 research papers in Peer reviewed national and international journals of reputation and presented about 2000 research articles in national and international conferences. Department is a major contributor to the h-index of the university with a share of 33 out of 65. The faculty members have received several prestigious fellowships and awards in recognition of their research contributions. Several Alumni of the Department have occupied prestigious positions in industries and academic institutions in India and abroad. The department has great potential for expansion, particularly because of large scale investment in Greater Mangalore on Chemical Industries like Petrochemical Company, Pharmaceutical and Speciality Chemical Industries, Thermal Plant, BASF etc. Mangalore, officially known as Mangaluru, is the chief port city of the Indian state of Karnataka. It is located about 352 km (219 miles) west of the state capital, Bengaluru, between the Arabian Sea and the Western Ghats mountain range. It is the second major city in Karnataka state in all aspects next to the capital city Bengaluru. It is the only city in Karnataka to have all modes of transport - Air, Road, Rail and Sea along with 5 other major cities in India. It is also known as the Gateway of Karnataka. It is the largest city in the Tulu Nadu region of Karnataka. Mangaluru is the second best business destination in Karnataka after Bengaluru and 13th best in India. Mangaluru is the largest city and administrative headquarters of the Dakshina Kannada district and is one of the most multicultural non-metro cities of India. It is also the largest city in the Coastal and Malnad regions of Karnataka, besides being a commercial, industrial, educational and healthcare hub on the West Coast of India. This port city has the second largest airport in Karnataka. It has the numerous golden-sand beaches, viz. Panambur, NITK, Thannirbhavi and Ullal beaches. The beautiful and religious centres that have given Mangaluru its character include Mangaladevi , Kadri Manjunatha Temple, Gokarnatheshwara Temple, Ullala Darga, St. Aloysius Chapel, Rosario Chathedral and Milagres Church. Some of the places like Theme Park, Zoo and Planetarium at Pilikula, historical places like Sultan Battery, Bekal Fort (Kasargod) are worth-visiting. There are many tourist places from a short distance from the city, like shree Durgaparameshwari Temple at Kateel (30 km), Sri Krishna Temple at Udupi (60 km), St. Lawrence Church and Bahubali Gommateshwara monolith at Karkala (40 km), Thousand Pillars Basadi at Moodabidire (30 km), St. Mary’s Island at Malpe (50 km), Maravanthe beach at Kundapura (100 km), Sri Manjunatheshwara Temple at Dharmastala (90 km), Mookambika Temple at Kollur (150 km), etc. Some of the nearby industries like KIOCL, MRPL, BASF, JBF, MCF, Solara and Mangalore Port are worth-seeing. Chemistry is a universal and dynamically changing subject. It serves as an interface to all other life sciences and has the potential to provide solutions to many of the world’s major problems in energy, environment, food production, health and other issues. Materials Science is an emerging and challenging field of study. Research in Materials Science has contributed to the emergence of various nanomaterials, biomaterials, electronic, optical, magnetic, piezoelectric materials, ceramics, glasses, polymers, metal alloys, smart materials, semiconductors etc. The aim of this conference is to review the innovations in the field of Chemistry and Materials Science. Department of Chemistry, Mangalore University invites participants from all over the globe to attend an International Conference on Advances in Chemical and Materials Science (ICCM-2019) to be conducted during October 17-19, 2019. ICCM-2019 aims to bring together academic researchers, scientists from industries and research scholars to share their research experiences and experimental results in different areas of Chemistry and Materials Science.
