Message to Prospective International Students Kumamoto University is located in the heart of Kyushu Island, in the southern part of Japan. Kumamoto is characterized of what we call “RGB (Red, Green and Blue)”, the three primary colors of light. “Red” refers to the largest active volcano in Japan, Mt. Aso, which has been authorized as one of Japanese Geoparks. Also Kumamoto people are warm-hearted. “Green” represents “the Land of Forest”, which is rich in natural scenery and historic landscapes, including two National Parks of Japan. “Blue” leads to “the City of Water” for its abundant, pure and crystal-clean groundwater that earned Kumamoto City the “Water for Life” UN-Water Best Practice Award in 2013. Graduate School of Science and Technology (GSST), Kumamoto University has about 1000 graduate students, and more than 150 students from about 30 different countries are studying here. We have a program called IJEP where we teach in English. At GSST, we have Global Joint Education Center for Science and Technology (GJEC), which promote international programs and offer lectures in English given by professors invited from overseas universities. Director of International Division of GJEC will be in charge of the program for international students. Apart from academic programs we offer field trips for international students and social activities to promote exchanges with Japanese students. A student in Master’s course in Computer Science and Electrical Engineering, Graduate School of Science and Technology “I spent a happy academic life with good friends and in a good environment. Even if I do encounter communication problems and difficulties in research, I have great support of my professor and Japanese friends in the laboratory, as well as other international students from Voice of Indonesia, Korea, Mongolia, Papua New Guinea, China, Tonga and other countries.     Himematsu and Furuya Earth, Planets and Space (2016) 68:169 DOI 10.1186/s40623-016-0545-7 LETTER Open Access Fault source model for the 2016 Kumamoto earthquake sequence based on ALOS‑2/PALSAR‑2 pixel‑offset data: evidence for dynamic slip partitioning Yuji Himematsu1* and Masato Furuya2 Abstract Series of earthquakes including three Mw > 6 earthquakes occurred in Kumamoto prefecture in the middle of the Kyushu island, Japan. In order to reveal the associated crustal deformation signals, we applied offset tracking tech- nique to ALOS-2/PALSAR-2 data covering three Mw > 6 earthquakes and derived the 3D displacements around the epicenters. We could identify three NE–SW trending displacement discontinuities in the 3D displacements that were consistent with the surface location of Futagawa and Hinagu fault system. We set three-segment fault model whose positions matched the displacement discontinuities, and estimated the slip distributions on each segment from the observed pixel-offset data. Whereas right-lateral slip was dominant in the shallower depth of the larger segments, normal fault slip was more significant at a greater depth of the other segment. The inferred configuration and slip distribution of each segment suggest that slip partitioning under oblique extension stress regime took place during the 2016 Kumamoto earthquake sequence. Moreover, given the consistent focal mechanisms derived from both the slip distribution model and seismology, the significant non-double couple components in the focal mechanism of the main shock are due to simultaneous ruptures of both strike-slip and normal faulting at the distinct segments. Nishiwaki Prof. Emeritus, Tokyo Institute of Technology, Tokio, Japan Hon.Prof. der Universität Wien, Institut fir Medizinische Physik, Universität Wien, Wien, Austria Fifty years ago, in 1945, the first three atomic bombs in human history were produced by the United States; one of these bombs was exploded experimentally at the testing ground in the desert 80 km from Alamogordo, New Mexico, on 16 July. The remaining two were used against Japan; the one called "Little Boy", using Uranium 235 was dropped on Hiroshima on 6 August, the other "Fat Man", using Plutonium 239 on Nagasaki on 9 August, 1945. In the early morning, at 1:30 a.m. of 6 August 1945, a United States Army weather observation plane took off from the Tinian air base in one of the Mariana Islands in the Pacific towards Japan. As the plane approached Hiroshima, at an altitude of about 10,000 metres, it sent a message to the B-29 "Enola Gay" loaded with an atomic bomb, which was following it, "fair weather, ready for air raid." The "Enola Gay" took off from Tinian Island at 2:45 a.m. together with two observation planes on both sides, and invaded Hiroshima from the northeast and dropped the atomic bomb at 8:15:17 a.m., (Tinian time 9:15:17 a.m.), at an altitude of 9,600 metres. Records on the time of explosion range from 8:15 to 8:18 a.m., depending on the source of information. However, according to the Hiroshima City, the official time of explosion was announced to have been 8:15 a.m.

This was the first time ever that we welcomed an official from Turkey and also our first time to welcome an insurance regulator from Uzbekistan. At the beginning of the Fellowship Pro- gram, the visiting fellows had an opportunity to introduce themselves and talk about the areas that they were interested to learn more about through the Fel- lowship Program when they met with Mr. Himino, Vice Minister for Internation- al Affairs, FSA. In addition to lectures in the FSA, the Visiting Fellows also visited a number of insurance companies to learn about topics they were interested in.
