  • ABSTRACT by Evan Roberts Ash This Thesis Studies the Cincinnati
ABSTRACT OBJECTIONABLE: THE CINCINNATI COMMITTEE FOR THE EVALUATION OF COMICS AND THE AMERICAN ANTI-COMICS MOVEMENT, 1940-1957 by Evan Roberts Ash This thesis studies the Cincinnati Committee for the Evaluation of Comics, which operated from 1948 until 1979, but performed its most significant work before 1956. The Cincinnati Committee used a system of criteria developed by a University of Cincinnati psychology professor to rate comic books on cultural, moral, and aesthetic grounds. Through a partnership with Parents’ Magazine, a popular periodical for postwar families, the Cincinnati Committee’s critiques and lists reached an audience of over one million readers. Due to this widespread exposure and perception as a form of effective comic book regulation, congressional investigations of objectionable literature in 1952 and 1954 referenced the committee’s work in their hearings. This project is the first to use the Cincinnati Committee’s own archival materials in service of a historical narrative and argues that rather than being simply one of many localized responses to comic books, that the Committee’s work decisively shaped the national discussion over kids and comics. This examination of the Cincinnati Committee, which also provides a new history of the American anti-comics movement, helps to provide a path to understanding the Cold War in America by demonstrating its effects on domestic politics and social interactions. Past researchers have yet to analyze the shifts that have occurred within the retellings of these dark tales, and through this analysis, light will be shed onto what truly affects the media’s storytelling behavior. Building upon meme theory, this study will use narrative and historical context analyses to uncover the objectives, narrative elements and temporal environments surrounding 10 replications of three horror urban legend memes over the past century. This research will uncover how these memes have mutated over time and inform the world as to how context plays a role. A total of 30 horror urban legend artifacts (10 per meme) were analyzed using qualitative research methods in order to uncover the similarities and differences that appeared in the replications of each of the memes. Also, the contemporary thoughts, attitudes and values of the various time periods in which each of the retellings existed were analyzed to understand how historical events and movements may have led to a change in the story.

  • The Shadow and Persona of an Anti-Hero
IR - PERPUSTAKAAN UNIVERSITAS AIRLANGGA CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION 1.1 Background of the Study Nowadays, everything in this world seems to be divided into binaries, such as man/woman, white/black, good/evil et cetera. Inside good and evil binaries there is also a similar idea as those two, they are hero and villain. A hero is often represented as a good figure, while villains are depicted as the bad ones. The term of hero was first coined during the age of pre-historic Greek ἥρως (hērōs) which literally means “protector” or “defender” (Fry 2018, 21). In that same era, Greek has a notable example in the form of Perseus, an Olympian knight who slays Medusa, a snake enchantress, in order to protect Greek citizens as per order from Zeus, King of the Gods. Hero is a concept about someone, either male and female who strives for military conquest and are often admired for his/her brave acts or fine qualities (Campbell 2008, 42). Examples of heroes or heroines range from a mythical figure, such as Perseus which has been explained before; a real person, such as Nelson Mandela, who is often hailed as the liberator by the people of color; or even fictional figures in popular culture, such as Superman. Popular culture enthusiasts, especially comic book fans may often hear the terms hero and villain. However, not all of them understood that there are characters who do not belong to the hero nor villain categories, who called anti-heroes. Today's pop culture has many examples of anti-heroes. For instance, it can be seen from two major publishers in the United States, DC Comics and Marvel comics.
